Excellent results
following supervised
exercise sessions
After receiving physiotherapy following a broken
collarbone, Myfanwy Taylor was referred to
UniRec’s MediFit Programme in order to rebuild
the strength in both of her shoulders.
UNIREC
SPECIALIST
PROGRAMMES
Supervised by qualified
Clinical Exercise Physiologist
Kristina Driller, Medi-
Fit is a group-based exercise
programme designed to cater
for people affected by a range
of pre-existing or current medical
conditions, including; osteoporosis,
arthritis, epilepsy,
diabetes, obesity and more.
Having seen significant
improvement following the
completion of her first series
of MediFit sessions, Myfanwy
has now started her second
round of sessions with the
aim of continuing to improve
her health and wellbeing. We
caught up with Myfanwy to
find out more.
How did you first hear
about UniRec’s MediFit Programme?
After undergoing a course
of excellent treatment following
a broken right collarbone
and ongoing injury to my left
shoulder, my physiotherapist
recommended the MediFit
programme. I was a little apprehensive
as I have avoided
gyms since secondary school.
However, it was important to
improve the strength in both
of my shoulders so I decided to
give it a go.
Describe your experience
with the programme
and tell us about the impact
which attending the sessions
has had upon your health.
I was provided with an easyto-understand
programme
designed around my own individual
requirements and immediately
found the supervised
sessions to be very enjoyable.
The group-setting provides an
encouraging atmosphere and
the staff – Kristina, Maria and
Tamaki - are incredibly knowledgeable,
supportive and
friendly.
After notable improvements
in the strength of my shoulders
and upper arms following
my first series of sessions,
I returned to start a second
series focused upon helping to
improve my balance as well as
to reduce the intermittent pain
which affects my groin and
buttocks. Again, I have noticed
significant improvement after
six sessions. I’d strongly recommend
the programme to
anyone who has sustained an
injury and would benefit from
undertaking regular exercise. I
have already recruited two of
my friends to join me in the
sessions!
Will you continue to exercise
following the completion
of your second series of
sessions?
Yes, I intend to maintain
my membership and attend
UniRec’s LifeFit classes (a programme
designed for seniors
and easy exercisers). I am also
considering attending the
weekly yoga classes which are
offered within the centre in order
to help further improve my
balance and flexibility.
For a one-time ‘gymophobe’,
Krissie and the team
have turned my attitude on its
head and I no longer use my
previous go-to line of “My daily
walk is enough to keep me
fit and healthy, thank you!”
The entire staff (including the
wonderful reception team)
and other members help to
create a real sense of belonging
which encourages you to
feel comfortable and relaxed.
President’s Report
The silly season is over - hope you had a good
one. It's back to work for most. The Hamilton
Grey Power Office is in full swing preparing for the
new financial year.
BY ROGER HENNEBRY
HAMILTON GREY POWER
PRESIDENT
We have had a very
good year with membership
standing at
1629 with 1425 paid up - 199
unpaid. Our membership fluctuates
by about 200 each year.
Subs are due by March 31
and a new membership card
will be supplied to you with a
light green sticker for the 17/18
year.
I point this out so you will
not be confused with what
will be the ‘old’ blue card after
March.
Renewing membership is a
big task for our volunteers.
You can help us by paying
early so we can reply early but
remember that currently mail
can take up to three or four
days.
John Key’s resignation as
PM came as a shock to many,
reminding us a General Election
is looming.
I know Grey Power is a-
political but we do need to get
real!
Gold Card members are
falling behind financially and I
don’t care what they say, today’s
Super does not buy what
it used to.
Housing, rent, insurance,
electricity and gas... and increased
council rates too which
make it harder. We need to
look at the political parties carefully.
To this end I hope at our future
seminars we will have the
major parties presenting.
Winston Peters always takes
up the opportunity to come to
Hamilton.
Will we get Andrew Little
and Bill English to present?
Watch this space.
Our local Grey Power mag
news gatherers are looking for
help.
We currently print four issues
per year but if we can’t
get help we may have to drop
to three editions per year.
We really do need input
from you.
Your contributions make it
more down to earth and interesting
for other members.
We are so keen to hear your
stories, that we’ll put all contributors’
names in a draw
from which a lucky three will
win $50 each. Give it a go.
You might be one of the lucky
ones.
On behalf of Grey Power
I will be presenting to the
Waikato Regional Council on
its proposed Healthy Rivers
Plan for Change - Part 1 of a
bold, long term response to
address water quality issues
for the Waipa and Waikato
rivers. Costing tens of milllion$
over 80 years with $3
million just proposed in council’s
Annual Plan for year one.
Who will pay?
Grey Power Hamilton will
also be making submissions to
the Hamilton City Council on
its annual plan. Water meters
and privatisation of water are
hot topics and not supported
by your committee.
This will be the last magazine
before the AGM on May
31. I’ve enjoyed representing
you and I will be putting my
name forward again.
I would to thank my deputy
Jack for all the effort he has
put into Grey Power especially
the Monday morning seminars.
He hasn’t been well and
has decided to stand down
from his positions. The committee
will be organising the
speakers in future but knowing
Jack he will be there on
Monday mornings to add his
tuppence worth. I am looking
for a replacement for Jack, see
me if you are interested in doing
this role.
Petition calls for return
of community constables
Feeling safe is important to the enjoyment and
quality of life in the community. Part of the feeling
of security is achieved by the pro-active roll of the
police and a petition launched by an Hamilton
community centre seeks the return of dedicated
community police officers.
In the early 1990s an allout
effort was undertaken
to established Community
Policing Centres around
New Zealand. These were
staffed with a full-range of
specialised personnel who set
about getting to know their
areas, and the local criminal
elements, in detail.
Purpose-built centres were
established in West Hamilton,
Hamilton East, Nawton,
Hamilton North, Te Rapa and
Glenview-Melville with publiccounter
facilities. They now
stand empty or have been repurposed.
A national policy released
in 2015 picked out 30 policing
centres nationwide for closure
including most in Hamilton,
apparently as a cost-cutting
move.
The Te Rapa and Melville
community policing centres
were closed along with
West Hamilton, Nawton and
Hamilton North. Staff were
reallocated to other policing
centres or to the central
station.
In February Police
Minister Paula Bennett
said a four-year $388
million ‘Safer Communities’
package would include
500 beat and community
policing officers among 880
extra sworn staff aimed at
strengthening emergency
response and a focus on
youth offending, burglaries
and community crime.
‘’Knowing there is a nearby
police presence at all times is
something the community
expects,’’ she said.
Western Community
Centre manager Neil Tolan
said the centre strongly
advocated for the return
of community police who
worked in and focused
within neighbourhoods
across Hamilton - but had
been ignored - and so
launched a petition.
Mr Tolan said having been
established in the early 1990s,
community-based police
services have been dismantled
over the past four years
predominantly due to a freeze
in funding.
‘’For almost 25 years I have
worked closely with police
in the Hamilton west area.
Myself and thousands of
residents have seen the value
in the work of community
constables. It is a specialised
and needed police service.
‘’We have been advocating
this issue for the past four
years and will continue to
talk about this piece of social
infrastructure that is missing
in our community and across
Hamilton communities.
Mr Tolan’s views were
echoed by Te Whare Kokonga
- Melville Community House,
manager Sharlene Roberts
who said the dedicated
constables provided a valuable
link in the community on
several levels.
Melville had police officers
dedicated to the area and
based in the former Richmond
Park School near to the
community house.
‘’We had a talk when the
move to centralise police
was first undertaken. Small
communities like Nawton and
us. It was supposed to a trial
but we knew it wasn’t going
to be.’’
Ms Roberts said other
police would come in to patrol
the area but they could be a bit
‘staunch’.
‘’Because they knew
the people, the dedicated
community constables
provided a valuable between
families and individuals that
needed help and support and
some of the services available,’’
Ms Roberts was supportive
of the petition in an effort to
have dedicated community
constables re-established.
Former West Hamilton
police senior sergeant Carl
Fischer who spent 12 years
leading community policing
in West Hamilton said
Community Policing Centres
were designed to provide a
complete policing service and
were fully staff with CIB, Youth
Aid, burglary investigators and
front line staff responsible for
delivering all services in the
area.
‘’Local staff got to know
the local crims. Crime figures
dropped considerably, 30
percent of burglaries were
solved as opposed to about
16 percent now. But it is not
a cheap option. The police
(administration) say there are
better ways of doing things.
This is not working - compare
the statistic over the past 10
years with the appalling rate
of clearances for dishonesty
offences now. We still have
a WINZ office in Dinsdale
providing a service to clients -
pro-active policing works and
we want our police stations
staffed again.’’
Police Association president
Chris Cahill said while local
knowledge was a valuable part
of policing it was resourceintensive
when there were
many competing demands for
police resources.
‘’You could have a
community policing station
in an area where there is very
little demand. It is not a good
use of resources to have an
officer stuck in a building.
I can understand from
the point of view of older
people that they like the reassurance
of having a police
presence and with the extra
police numbers announced
there may be a possibility of
re-visiting the issue.’’
Mr Cahill said a return to
community policing, as it had
been, had not been identified
among initiatives including
those targeted at organised
crime and family violence.
However, proposals including
a new national 24/7 number
for non-emergencies and 12
mobile policing units in areas
where they are most needed
including smaller towns and
rural areas, may help to allay
public frustration.
Waikato district commander
Bruce Bird was not available
to comment on the matter.
Waikato police had also had
no confirmation of numbers
of new resources so were also
unable to comment on what
might come our way.
However, Mr Bird has
previously acknowledged that
police were open to discussion
around policing models.
The public petition to
Parliament, calling for the
reintroduction of dedicated
community police officers,
has been organised through
the Western Community
Centre and can be seen on
the counter at the centre in
Hyde Ave in Nawton and
through its website. www.
Healthy rivers plan - but who will pay?
Healthy Rivers now referred to as Plan Change 1
is still the most topical item for most rural people.
Ignore it at your peril!
We all know that the
Plan was adopted by Regional
Council days before
the elections last year.
The vote was tied 7 for
and 7 against with then
Chair Southgate using her
casting vote to push the plan
through.
The process in developing
the Plan was then successfully
challenged in the court by
Hauraki Iwi which resulted in
a reasonably large area of the
catchment being removed
from the plan while council
consults with Hauraki Iwi.
The next court case was
then initiated by a number
of farmer organisations
challenging the process that
council had undertaken.
This looks set to go to
court around the middle of
the year.
Already $14million has
been spent on activating this
plan.
In February this year council
discussed changes to its
annual plan and budget for
the next year commencing
July 1, 2017. One proposed
change was to include an additional
sum of $1.68m for
capital expenditure required
to implement the proposed
Plan together with a further
$1.068m for operational
work associated with the
Plan. This was approved by
majority vote as well as the
decision not to consult the
community on this change as
it was being loan funded and
as such will have minimum
effect on rates.
Council had engaged consultants,
Insight Economics in
Auckland to review the funding
options for implementing
the proposed Plan.
Their estimate was a total
cost of $19.8m over 10 years.
They further recommended
that this was funded by all
ratepayers not just farmers.
What was of concern was
their advice “that economic
modelling suggests that the
Plan will reduce farming profits
by around four percent per
annum, which is significant”.
Town and country folk
alike are encouraged to submit
on any part of the proposed
Plan.
Do you support or oppose
it?
Remember all submissions
must be made by March 8,
Maturing with dignity
As we age there are certain obvious changes
that occur. Our muscles begin to soften and
sag, we can gradually lose our muscle strength
and some of us start to slow down.
We may need glasses
to read the small
print, hearing may
be compromised and mobility
will possibly begin to decrease.
But we are still okay.
We want to continue as
we have in the past. Our
minds are sharp and we still
feel as though we are fifty.
However there are also
less obvious changes that
are occurring and if neglected
can really compromise
your quality of life, putting
a stop to many outings and
both social and physical activities.
Do you have complete
control over your bladder
or does it control you?
Are you ever anxious that
you might wet yourself? Do
you worry where the next
toilet may be? Do you need
the toilet often? Do you minimise
your fluid intake to
stay safe?
Do you have nights interrupted
by toilet visits? Do
you need to wear pads or
liners?
When these changes
start to occur it is common
for people to moderate their
activities to avoid being left
in a compromising situation.
The issues are private and
often not shared. They will
not go away and the consequences
will gradually get
worse.
Pelvic floor neglect is not
unusual. Various strategies
are implemented to cope
Attention all women...
Do you have a wetting problem?
When you cough, sneeze,
laugh, run, jump, dance...
• Do YOU plan outings around
toilet stops?
• Do YOU need spare underwear
“just in case”?
• Do YOU go to the toilet twice
or more a night?
• Do YOU have problems with
bowel function?
• Do YOU have decreased sexual
sensation?
You do not need to put up with this problem!
You may now be living with
a “ bossy bladder” and undignified
damp patches. If
you have lost control of your
most intimate body functions
– it does not feel good.
It leads to decreased confidence,
lowered self esteem,
fear of embarrassment and
loss of spontaneity. Being
spontaneous makes us feel
young.
Age is not a limiting factor
to regaining your intimate
control. It is never too
late to seek help, to implement
damage control and
Paraprosdokiansa
The first time I heard about
paraprosdokians, I liked
them. Paraprosdokians
are figures of speech in which
the latter part of a sentence
or phrase is surprising or
unexpected and is frequently
humorous. (Winston Churchill
loved them.)
1. Where there's a will, I want
to be in it.
2. The last thing I want to do
is hurt you.... but it's still on
my list.
3. Since light travels faster than
sound, some people appear
bright until you hear them
speak.
4. If I agreed with you, we'd
both be wrong.
5. We never really grow up....
we only learn how to act in
public.
6. War does not determine
who is right, only who is left.
7. Knowledge is knowing a
tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is
not putting it in a fruit salad.
8. To steal ideas from one
person is plagiarism. To steal
from many is research.
9. I didn't say it was your fault,
I said I was blaming you.
10. In filling out an application,
where it says, "In case of
emergency, notify...." I
answered, "a doctor."
11. Women will never be equal
to men until they can walk
down the street with a
bald head and a beer gut,
and still think they are sexy.
12. I used to be indecisive, but
now I'm not so sure.
13. To be sure of hitting the
target, shoot first and call
whatever you hit the target.
14. Going to church doesn't
make you a Christian, any
more than standing in a
garage makes you a car.
15. I'm supposed to respect
my elders, but it's getting
harder and harder for me
to find one now.
Spread the laughter,
share the cheer, let's be
happy, while we're here!
Your life’s story
It’s often not until someone dies that families
realise there’s a great deal about mum or
dad’s early life they don’t know.
They may have heard snippets
over the years, but
there are many gaps and
some interesting facts have
simply never come to light. A
common situation is different
members of the family know
different things, or have conflicting
views as to the correct
version of a story.
Sadly, the one person who
can set the record straight is no
longer there.
This potential problem can
be overcome by a service offered
by former newspaper
editor, Dennis Trotter, who interviews
individuals (and family
members, if required) to create
a script titled “Your Life’s
Story”.
In most instances people
choose a fairly basic review
of their life, from childhood,
through their working and
married life, parenthood, business
or employment, sporting
interests, hobbies and eventual
retirement. Something suitable
for reading as an eulogy
can be produced for as little
as $300-$500. Others opt for
something more extensive and
are happy to spend $1500 or
more.
Following an initial, noobligation
interview, Dennis is
able to give an estimate of cost
before undertaking an assignment.
He was prompted to establish
his business after being frequently
asked to prepare information
for eulogies which he is
sometimes asked to deliver.
“I enjoy interviewing families
and learning about their
loved ones. But it is easier to
Let me write
“Your Life’s Story”
interview the subject personally.
After all, who knows the
story better than the person
who is the main character?”
he says. “Also, while family
members may have an opinion
on the most significant aspects
of their loved one’s life, the
person themselves may have a
different view.”
Something that has been a
pleasant surprise to Dennis is
the number of adult children
who request his services to
write their parents’ life story.
He now has gift vouchers
which are proving popular and
Grid n°26277 medium
serve as a catalyst to get this
task completed before it’s too
late.
Most “You Life’s Story” assignments
are completed with
6-7 days. They involve the interview,
writing, a review of
the draft script and, following
acceptance and approval, the
printing of a hard copy. Clients
are also given a copy of
the script in electronic form so
that it can be easily added to at
some later stage.
Easing access to medical
cannabis a good move
The Grey Power Federation has commended
the Government for finally easing access to
medical cannabis.
Associate Health Minister
Peter Dunne recently
announced that authority
to approve applications for
non-pharmaceutical grade medicinal
cannabis will be held by
Ministry of Health professionals
rather than the minister.
Grey Power Federation president
Tom O’Connor said there
has been a long campaign by
several groups and individuals
seeking a relaxation of the law
around cannabis use.
“Unfortunately the genuine
needs of seriously ill people
were clouded by a noisy
group seeking the right to
grow their own cannabis
for recreational use and so
called self-medication.
“We had a bit of a stoush
with them a few months ago
when they jumped on the
band wagon but we tossed
them off again,” said Tom.
In our discussions with
Health Minister Jonathan Coleman
and Associate Health
Minister Peter Dunne both
promised to give careful consideration
to our request to
make access for people in genuine
need easier.
Until now it could take several
months for an application
to be approved and then only
fully tested products were considered.
“We saw no justification
in people suffering when
help could be made available
much faster and easier.”
Tom said: “There is a
world of difference between
cannabis-based pharmaceuticals,
fully tested or otherwise,
and home grown cannabis
for self-medication,
which the federation did not
support.
“There is still some way to
go in terms of making a greater
range of products available
and funded by Pharmac but
this is a very good start which
probably could have been
made earlier if the recreational
use lobby had not slowed the
process,” he said.
Monday morning meetings
Monday Morning
Meetings. River
Age Centre commencing
at 10.30 am.
The Hamilton GreyPower
Committee has decided that
because of the ongoing problems
in getting speakers who
are both interesting and free to
speak during the day, it is going
to limit speakers to once
a month. This will be the last
Monday of the month .
The good news is that on
the Mondays where there is
no speaker, we will have a coffee
morning for members to
meet, greet and get to know
each other… something that
tended not to happen when
people were simply sitting and
listening.
Even better coffee, tea and
milo will be served FREE of
charge.
An informal coffee morning
will give members the opportunity
to talk to their committee
and we will arrange discussion
sessions on a topical
subjects or things suggested
by the group. We want your
input and we will be guided by
your views and ideas.
We recently enjoyed a very
interesting talk from Tony Armstrong
– rates control team.
On March 27 we will host
Barry Quayle, Fieldays general
manager for 20 years. Barry
will share some interesting stories
about Fieldays which has
grown from small beginnings
to an international event drawing
visitors from all around the
world.
We appreciate all those
members who regularly attended
our meetings during
2016 and we welcome any
other members who would
like to come along to either
hear a speaker or to simply to
enjoy coffee and a chat. We
would dearly like to see more
of you attending and hope this
new format will bring more of
you along.
Are you having problems
with your vision?
There are many causes of vision loss, and conditions of the eye
such as Cataract and Glaucoma, that we can diagnose and treat.
One specific disease called Macular Degeneration causes progressive
loss of vision in the centre of your visual field but leaving your
peripheral or side vision intact.
It is the leading cause of legal blindness and severe vision loss in New Zealand
(It does not result in total or ‘black’ blindness). One in seven New Zealanders
over the age of 50 years are affected. Smokers are three times more likely to
develop the disease and at least a decade earlier than non-smokers. People
with a family history of macular degeneration have a 50% chance
of developing the disease.
Symptoms may include
Difficulty with reading or any other activity that requires fine vision
Scammers swipe almost $12,000
Shirley McGuire, co-owner of green world health
and Lifestyle in Motueka, was approached by a
telephone scammer claiming to be from Spark.
BY MARTIN DE RUYTER
A
Motueka business owner
has been left feeling
violated after a phone
scammer nearly got away with
$12,000 of her and her husband's
life savings.
This follows a warning from
police last week after three elderly
residents in the Tasman
district were scammed out
of $120,000 through phone
scams.
Shirley said she wanted to
warn others not to unwittingly
"open the door" to those
who called and pretended to
be from legitimate companies.
"They use trusted names,"
Shirley said after a person
claiming to work for Spark
called her green world health
& Lifestyle store on Wednesday,
under the guise of addressing
a faulty modem.
"He introduced himself
by name and he said they'd
been monitoring the modem
and it hadn't been working
properly."
Shirley said she and her husband,
Mike, had just bought a
new Spark modem and had
been having difficulties with
internet dropping in and out,
so the call seemed legitimate.
The man used the "right
technical language" which
made her even more assured
that he was legitimate.
He told her a technician
would come and replace some
equipment the next day, and
even gave a false name, Spark
staff ID number, and appointment
time.
The phone scammer ran a
diagnostic through the computer
after Shirley had given
him remote access through
Teamviewer software. It
seemed to fix errors and alerts,
"Other professionals who
have come and done work on
my computer have used Teamviewer
so I didn't think anything
of that," she said.
The man told her the computer
and router were faulty
and she was owed $900 by
Spark, and he would transfer
the money into her bank
account as "they weren't allowed
to use cheques".
He then told her to log into
her internet banking to check
the money had gone in.
Because the Teamviewer
software was still running, the
scammer was able to access to
her account, but Shirley said
she hadn't put two-and-two
together.
"The computer screen kept
going black and I said: 'what's
happening'? and he said"
'don't worry ma'am, we're
giving you $900 and I'm just
trying to put it into your account'."
When $9000 appeared in
the account both Shirley and
her husband became suspicious.
She said the man tried to
assure her it had been a mistake
and they needed to give
him back the money or he'd
lose his job, but her husband
didn't buy it.
The couple hung up the
call, rang their bank, and got
the ANZ account closed just
in time.
"What we didn't realise is
[the scammers] had just transferred
the $9000 from our
credit account," she said.
ANZ closed the account just
minutes before the scammers
completed a $12,000 withdrawal.
Shirley said it had been an
emotional couple of days and
she kept feeling distraught
that she'd nearly lost them so
much money.
"You think you're an intelligent
person and that you're
doing the right thing [in cooperating
with the caller],"
she said.
"I just keep thinking about
my responsibility in it. It really
does affect you because you
think 'I opened the door that
let them in ...'"
She didn't want to go
through life suspecting people
but felt it was important to be
aware of the dangers of these
kinds of scams.
Shirley said if people were
cold-called they should ask the
caller for a phone number and
offer to call them back.
If the caller was legitimate
they'd be able to give a local
number that could be verified.
Police told her that a lot of
people had been hit in Motueka,
and many people had lost
a lot of money in similar scams.
Shirley said they were
pleased the bank moved so
quickly and prevented them
from losing their savings.
ANZ spokesperson Stefan
Herrick said there had been
three reported scam attempts
in Motueka and Richmond in
the space of two hours on
Wednesday afternoon, and
there may have been more
they weren't aware of.
New Zealand Bankers' Association
(NZBA) spokesperson
Philip van Dyk said these
scams were not an uncommon
occurrence.
"These scams are happening
all the time regrettably,
and the main thing we're
asking people to do is be vigilant
and take care," Mr van
Dyk said.
"The horrible thing is
fraudsters are always looking
for new ways to trick people
into providing confidential information
which allows them
to access bank accounts."
NZBA advises people to
never give out confidential
information such as PIN numbers
or bank account usernames.
It's also issued a reminder
that utility companies, such
as telcos, will never transfer
you to your bank or ask for
access to your bank account.
Shining a light on elder abuse and neglect
Seniors Minister Maggie Barry is calling for a
light to be shone on elder abuse over concerns
the 2000 documented cases each year
represent only a small part of thousands more
that go unreported.
At an event to mark
World Elder Abuse
Awareness Day, the
Minister said it was time to
bring the issue out of the
shadows.
“It still is the secret a lot of
people don’t talk about and
until we do shed light on this
dark space, we don’t really
know the extent of the problem,”
Ms Barry says.
“We know there are many
others that occur. Based on
our population, if you look
at international trends, there
would be more than 17,000
cases a year.”
The Minister was joined
by three SuperSeniors Champions;
high-profile advocates
for older people.
Actor Dame Kate Harcourt
told the audience
“ageing is not for sissies”
and advised seniors to appoint
a power of attorney
to keep their finances safe.
Champion weightlifter Precious
McKenzie recommended
keeping fit to remain
sharp while Dame
Malvina Major, who said she
was “retiring” very soon,
outlined work commitments
which will keep the international
opera star connected
to the community.
That connection is vital
for seniors’ self esteem and
wellbeing as they age.
In launching a new survey,
‘Attitudes Towards Ageing’,
the Minister revealed many
seniors reported feeling
lonely and isolated despite
eight out of 10 people having
respect for older people.
“Social isolation and loneliness
among our seniors is
particularly concerning as it
increases vulnerability to elder
abuse and neglect.
“I want people to be
aware of the many forms and
nuances elder abuse takes.
“It takes a village and a
very aware community, to
ensure our vulnerable people
are kept safe. We all need
to be diligent and aware of
what can go wrong.”
The Government directly
funds 27 elder abuse and
neglect prevention services
and last year the Minister
launched Community Connects,
an umbrella programme
to encourage agefriendly
communities, and
reduce social isolation.
