The Government announced that free childcare for 3 to 4 year old children will increase from 15 hours to 30 hours per week from September this year. The eligibility rules are complex as the scheme aims to help working parents. A summary of some of the main points are listed below however a more in depth question and answer review has been posted on the Essentially Local website: • 30 hours are free for 38 weeks or 1140 hours for the year • Parents must earn the equivalent of 16 hours a week at the minimum wage • Each parent must earn less than £100,000 a year • Applications for funding can be made from the term following the child’s third birthday • Each funded session cannot be longer than 10 hours While parents must work exceptions may apply if one parent is on disability benefit, is a carer or on statuatory sick pay. Zero hours workers and the selfemployed have to earn an equivalent of 16 hours at the minimum wage, meaning some may work less hours but earn more. Some childcare settings will only offer stretched or all year round calculations. Funds can also be divided between more than one provider if they are registered. Parents will be responsible for any funding shortfalls that the grant doesn’t cover, such as food and other sundries.
