Open day at Stony Stratford
Bowls Club will bowl you over!
Ancell Trust Sports Ground, Ostlers Lane, Stony Stratford
The first Open Day of the bowling
season will take place on Sunday,
30 April. Members will be ready to
welcome you between 10.00am and
5.00pm and can’t wait to introduce
you to the sport. Everyone from
10 years old is welcome, although
younger visitors will need to bring an
adult. There will also be a cup of tea
or coffee to waiting for you.
Free coaching and training will
be on offer, provided by accredited
coaches, as well as all the equipment
you will need. It won’t take long for
you to learn the skills – usually only 4
or 5 sessions.
Stony Stratford Bowls Club has over
a hundred members, men, women
and a growing youth section. New
members are being sought to enjoy
this fun and sociable game. Lawn
Bowls is played from mid April until the
beginning of October and then winter
activities begin. You can look forward
to Sunday lunches, quizzes, crib, bingo
and coach trips, as well as start of
season and Christmas parties.

Local cyclists ride to Belgium
On Sunday, 28 May a team of cyclists,
with back-up from Milton Keynes
Rugby Union Football Club (MKRUFC
formerly Wolverton RFC) will cycle
from Wolverton to Ploegsteert,
Belgium in 3 days! This will be the
annual fund-raiser for MKRUFC.
Starting at the Memorial in the Square
Wolverton they will follow the canal to
Leighton Buzzard, cut across to South
Herts. and into London. At Woolwich
they’ll join the cycleway to Chatham
having spent 90 miles in the saddle.
The next day it’s off to Dover to
catch the Calais ferry, and after a
night at St Omer they will head to
Vieux Belgium to meet the Mayor.
The great-grandfather of Chris
Stevens, one of the founding ‘Ring
Of Fire Cyclists’, Captain Thomas
Tannat Pryce VC, was killed in
action here during WW1 and was
awarded a VC. The team will then
visit the Ploegsteert memorial where
Captain Pryce and Albert French
from Wolverton are remembered.
Wolverton Tigermoths Football Club
donated a ball which will be laid at
the Football Truce site before heading
to the Menin Gate. They will lay three
wreaths at one of the daily formal
tribute services – one each for Albert
French, Captain Pryce VC and the
Edgar Mobs Battalion (made up of
local sportsmen). Tuesday night will be
spent with friends from Ploegsteert.
The twenty-four riders cycle back
to Dunkirk for a lunchtime event,
possibly with a minor hangover! Not
all are keen cyclists and one mad pair
is even contemplating doing the trip
on a tandem, so remember to show
them your support!
