People’s expectations are higher
than they used to be. They
say that what was a luxury to
one generation is an absolute
necessity to the next.
What are N.D.’s
CM: most popular
destinations?
Otte-COleman: Theodore
Roosevelt National Park is our
number one attraction. It gets
over a half-million visitors per
year. The International Peace
Gardens is one of our gems. It’s
one of the only places where
you can still cross the border
without a passport. The Ralph
Engelstad Arena and the Fargo
Dome, as major event centers,
draw huge numbers of visitors
to the cities in which they are
located.
It’s the “oddities” that attract
attention, as well. We’ve
gotten so much press on the
Enchanted Highway—it’s
whimsical and different. People
come from Germany to see the
albino calves at the Jamestown
Buffalo Museum—that’s one
that’s really sought out.
What are your
CM: personal keys to
success?
Otte-COleman: Balance.
And that goes beyond
balancing being a mother and
a professional. You need to take
care of yourself, too. Everybody
knows I’m a lot happier if I
get that run in the morning.
You also really have to believe
in what you do. At the end of
the day, if you really feel your
work is worth something, then
you feel good about it and it all
comes together.
• More than 16 million visitor trips are completed in N.D. each year.
• Each visitor adds $81 to the gross state product.
• Advertising N.D. adds a 1:8 return to the state tax base.
• 68 percent of visitors/travelers are from out of state.
• One of every 12 workers in the state owes their job to tourism.
• Approximately $733 million in wages and salaries are generated
through state tourism.
