With the advent of Delta Airline’s
direct flight from Bismarck to
Salt Lake City, area residents can
take advantage of a long weekend
in a fascinating region. Salt Lake City has a
unique atmosphere with historic buildings,
museums, world-class restaurants and plenty
of recreational activities at nearby mountain
resorts.
Ski Country
As winter approaches, travelers can fly to skicountry
as part of Delta’s direct flight in about
1.5 hours. The Salt Lake City area boasts several,
well-known ski resorts including: three at Park
City; and one in Snowbird, Alta and Solitude.
The Mormon Influence
Salt Lake City reflects the heritage and
presence of the Mormon Church. Temple
Square features buildings and films reflecting
Mormon history. Visitors can also hear the
Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra on
Sunday mornings when they tape their weekly
television broadcast.
People from diverse backgrounds can even
research their heritage at the Family History
Library, the largest depository of genealogical
records in the world.
Culture
Salt Lake City has art, history and science
museums like the: Draper Historical Society
and Museum, The Salt Lake City Art Center and
The Women’s Art Center. The city is also home
to professional basketball team, Utah Jazz, and
offers live jazz entertainment at Zanzibar.
Great Accommodations
For the 2002 Winter Olympics, Salt Lake City
built a spectacular hotel, The Grand America.
This elegant, 24-story property has a white,
granite exterior and balconies adorned with
iron railings, not to mention rooms with a
magnificent view of the mountains.
The ambience of the Grand America is of
lavish and comfortable, classic styling. In a
beautiful lobby with a soaring ceiling, afternoon
tea is served daily with background music by
a harpist or pianist. Jazz is on tap Friday and
Saturday evenings.
The Hotel’s public rooms display Murano
chandeliers, English, wool carpets, Richelieu
furnishings and oak paneling. The Garden
Restaurant is a beautiful venue with huge fresh
flower arrangements and a view to the gardens
outside. An attractive pool and a fine spa are
also available.
A great alternative to The Grand America
Hotel is the Hotel Monaco. It features crisp,
contemporary surroundings in a historic bank
building. On the ground floor, you’ll find a
fine restaurant called Bambara. The cuisine and
service are superb. If you go there, try their
roasted corn bisque with crab or one of their
signature fish, pork and beef entrees.
A direct flight from Bismarck to Salt Lake
City is just under $300 (as of October 2009).
Take advantage of this convenient air service to
visit a delightful area.
