When a Heart Attack Strikes
The Difference Between Life and Death
So you think you are having a heart attack.
What should you do?
Call 911, drive yourself to the hospital,
or have a friend or family member take you
there?
The latest research shows, 911 is the best call to
make when a heart attack strikes.
It could mean the difference between life and
death.
Victims treated by paramedics obtain life-saving
treatment faster than hospital walk-ins.
By Health Specialist Marilyn Mitzel
That is the conclusion of Dr. Ivan Rokas, a
UCLA emergency medicine physician who
reviewed data from hospitals and counties around
the nation.
“Even a 15 minute delay in treating a heart
attack increases the risk of death, and causes more
damage to the heart,” says Dr. Rokas.
Paramedics can more quickly diagnose serious
heart attacks and call ahead to hospitals, telling
them what procedure is likely needed even before
they arrive.
