President’s Communiqué
Hello fellow members!
With the success of the
volunteer recognition
breakfast in April, we
wish to thank again all
those volunteers who
contribute their time and
talent to the chamber.
We especially thank
those who contribute on
our many committees
and on our board of
directors. Without these
volunteers, we would
not be where we are as a
chamber. My thanks
again.
The Township of Smith
Ennismore Lakefield is
preparing to redo the
road and the parking lot
in front of and adjacent
to our license bureau.
Please be aware of some
inconvenience this
summer. However, we
will end up with newly
paved parking lots,
curbs, gutters, and a
newly paved road when
all is completed.
As indicated in our last
Annual General
Meeting, the chamber is
embarking on a new
strategic plan for the
next five years. We
intend to form a task
force to assist us in this
visioning process. If
you would like to be on
this task force, please
contact the chamber
office at 652-6963 or
myself at 652-1100. We
intend to hire a
professional facilitator
and we will begin our
work on this task in
September. We expect
to complete this process
and deliver a new five
year strategic plan at the
next annual general
meeting in February
2011.
Those of you who have
traveled in the northern
area of our influence will
note that our Apsley
office has been relocated
to downtown Apsley.
The office is now in the
building occupied by
Royal Lepage Frank Real
Estate. With this
location, we will have a
year round presence in
Apsley. We intend to
staff this office for
approximately 3 months,
with the balance of the
year being accessible
through Royal Lepage
Frank Real Estate. We
thank the offices of
Crawford Building
Consultants for the
moving arrangements
and the two workers
arranged by the real
estate office who
contributed the labour
to move furniture and
boxes.
There are still
opportunities available
to become a member of
our board of directors.
This is a unique
opportunity where you
can join other likeminded
and talented
small business owners to
help provide viable
management to our
chamber. It also
provides an opportunity
to network with your
peers and get your name
out into the community.
We need two more
directors to provide
sufficient services to our
members. If you are

Robyn Trew
Lakefield Summer Student
Hi Folks! My name is Robyn
Trew, and I am one of the two new
additions to the East Kawartha
Chamber team as the Special Events
& Tourism Coordinator summer
student, here in the Lakefield Office.
Growing up in the small town of
Hillsdale, just north of Barrie, allowed
me to make the easy transition into
the Eastern Kawartha Lakes Region,
settling in Peterborough for the past
four years as I completed my
Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree in
International Development and
Political Studies at Trent University.
This fall, I will be continuing my
education at Centennial College’s
Centre for Creative Communications
for a post-graduate diploma in
Advertising Account Management.
I am looking forward to getting
the chance to meet each of you and
providing referrals and information
on what the Kawartha Lakes has to
offer. I cannot wait for the summer
season to get into full swing, and
would love for you to stop by and say
hello to us here underneath the clocktower
whenever you are in town.

Caroline Sadlier
Apsley Summer Student
Hello everyone! My name is
Caroline Sadlier and I am the other
new summer student at the East
Kawartha Chamber of Commerce. I
will be spending most of my time in
Lakefield until the end of June. In
July and August I will be in our newly
relocated downtown Apsley office. I
am very excited to open and be ready
for the public at the end of this
month.
I was born and raised in the East
Kawartha Lakes area. I attended
Ridpath Public School and then
Lakefield High School. Upon
graduating, I chose to study at
Laurentian University in Sudbury.
Having completed my second year of
a Bachelor of Science Degree,
majoring in Zoology, I will be
heading to the University of
Helsinki, Finland in the fall for a year.
I am a firm believer in travel and
the discovery of new places and
people. However, I am equally happy
to be home. I enjoy the forests and
lakes of the Kawartha Lakes region
and am looking forward to spending
my summer in this area. Please feel
free to drop by and check out our
new Apsley office at 135 Burleigh St .

My husband Steve and I
relocated to Ennismore from Aurora
almost 22 years ago with our two
children, Mark and Christen and have
made this a place we are proud to call
“home”. I began my career in
banking with this move and joined
RBC. Through various positions and
roles within the organization, I very
quickly learned that I could make a
difference working with
entrepreneurs and this is where my
career took another turn. I joined the
Business Development Bank (BDC)
last year. I am responsible for
commercial financing and consulting
throughout the area and enjoy
working with entrepreneurs to help
them achieve their goals.
I have also enjoyed community
involvement for 7 years with Big
Brothers/Big Sisters and their inschool
mentoring program. I
currently sit on the panel of the
Research Alliance Group for
Peterborough and Durham which is
an alliance between organizations and
angel investors who’s goal is to link
emerging technology and businesses
to resource providers with the
ultimate goal of driving job creation,
revenue growth, and social benefits in
our local communities. Most recently
I spent the past 2 years as Chair of
the fundraising committee for the
2010 Canada Wide Science Fair
which was recently held in
Peterborough. I have been a member
of the Chamber for a number of
years and look forward to my new
role on the Board.

Did You Receive Your Directory?
The East Kawartha Chamber of Commerce has released their 2010/2011 business
directory: Your Guide to Local Business, with once again over 300 member businesses
listed in categories from Accommodations to Water & Wells.
Last year’s edition introduced a new format, which won an award from the Ontario
Chamber of Commerce. This year continues the award-winning format, with some
improvements and a survey response card to assess the community interest in the
guide. Lazer Graphics once again handled overall design, assembly and printing.
Distribution has been expanded to all residents of Douro-Dummer, Galway-
Cavendish & Harvey, North Kawartha and Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield, by mail starting
on May 28 th … all member businesses and high traffic tourist locations are also
included.

wino” who paired wine

Bridge Inn (Young’s
Point). Hors D’oeuvres
and a five course dinner
were prepared at The Old
Bridge Inn amongst an
intimate setting, using food
sources within a 100 km
radius while supporting
local farmers and
wholesalers. Each course
was accompanied by wine,
and Shari Darling taught
each guest about wine
selection, pairing wine with
food and tips on preparing

The Province of Ontario has embarked upon an ambitious objective to achieve a
“barrier free” province by 2025 (businesses & organizations must comply by 2012).
To accomplish this objective, the Province has introduced a number of legislated
standards that will apply to all sectors, including business and retail. Designated
accessible parking spaces, accessible washrooms, alternate format menus, modified
customer counters and ramps are some of the examples of how businesses can
accommodate individuals with disabilities. Information will be provided about the
legislation as well as some practical tips that may make your business more
accessible.
