Tuesday 14th February 2017 c a r i b b e a n t i m e s . a g 13 Gov’t costs Horse Society International grant By Marver Woodley President of the Antigua and Barbuda Horse Society has blasted the government for not fulfilling its promise and costing them an international grant. According to the Society’s President Jeanie Eastern the nation’s Government failure to meet various “simple” requirements requested by the International Federation of Equestrians has cost them the much-needed grant of $50,000 USD after making a promise to do so. During an interview with Caribbean Times Newspaper, Eastern noted that some 18 months ago, a representative visited the twin island and handed out some guidelines to follow in order for the grant to be approved with a strict timeline of one year, the guidelines Eastern lamed would cost the Government no money what so ever. Some of the requirements included a 10-year extension on the lease for the land currently utilized by the body as well as a donation of some gravel to backfill nearby dams to build an arena as the present ones are extremely deteriorated, though the government was not obligated to backfill the ponds, Eastern sternly noted that it was promised and agreed on by both parties. The loss of the grant has cost the Association a considerable amount of money and time as they were preparing the grounds for the upgrade, the grant would have provided. By Carlena Knight Hometech Systems Outlaws picked up double victories over the weekend in the Antigua Barbuda Basketball Association Division One League. On Thursday night in their first match up, Outlaws defeated Ottos Full Throttle, 68-62 at JSC. Humroy Wright was the leading scorer for his team with 19 points. He was assisted by Kevin Roberts with 16 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Freetown Travelers also picked up a win over Harold Lovell Rockersville, 54-48. Morlon ‘Little’ Davis led his team with 14 points and 10 rebounds. He was assisted by Mario Samuel with 14 points and 5 assists. Ariel Quallis of Rockersville had 18 points, 13 rebounds and 5 steals in a losing effort. Meanwhile on Saturday night, Outlaws edged out Harold Lovell Rockersville, 71-69. Kevin Roberts led his team with 22 points and 6 assists and Humroy Wright chipped in with 17 points. Darren Jeanville grabbed By Marver Woodley The first ever annual 3-some Beach Volleyball Tournament is slated to kick off later this month. The first of many games under the recently ratified constitution of the Antigua and Barbuda Volleyball Association is scheduled to be on the 26th of February at Millers by the Sea. According to reports the event is expected to attract more than 16 teams, with teams consisting of 3 players a side 2 of which has 14 rebounds for the victors. Rockersville’s Walton Christian had 21 points and 11 rebounds. He was assisted by Kevin Joseph with 13 points and 9 rebounds. Teammates, Ariel Quallis had 12 points while Kevin Francis contributed 11 points and 11 rebounds. Travelers once again picked up a much needed Eastern who indicated that he has visited and pleaded with the government on several occasions to fulfill the promise made still holds strong that another grant could be arranged and approved, however bleak the future looks without the government fully behind them. The previous grant which was dismissed in December 2016 was to be used at the Spring Hill facility and other areas of the sport on island in hopes of reviving a number of activities at the facility. To date the government has not spoken with Eastern on doing anything to secure future grants or what was the reason for not fulfilling the requirements, according to Eastern. Morlon ‘Little’ Davis once again led his team with 21 points, 15 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals while for Crushers, Cohen DeSouza had 19 points and 16 rebounds. Kebo Orford and Jamie Harris chipped in with 11 points and 17 rebounds. Beach Volleyball tournament on the horizon to be females along with one male. To participate each player is expected to pay $20 per person and the registration period is currently open and will close off on the 24th just two days before the games are to be held. The winning trio will be awarded $500 along with prizes and surprises for the second and third place finishers. The one day event will commence at 10:00 a.m. Interested persons can contact the local Association for more information.
