Paul's writings tell us that Jesus knew what He
was talking about. When He said "temple" He was
not speaking of the stone structure in Jerusalem.
The scripture plainly states:
Know ye not that your body is the temple of the
Holy Ghost. . . . Know ye not that ye are the temple
of God, and the spirit of God dwelleth in you? If
any man defile the temple of God, him shall God
destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which
temple ye are. . . . What agreement hath the temple
of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the
living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them
and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they
shall be my people (1 Corinthians 6:19; 3:16, 17; 2
Corinthians 6:16).
We need to appreciate that this "temple of God"
is vitally connected with the new covenant. To
suggest that God will "dwell" and "walk" with His
people brings the book of Hebrews into focus:
"This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days . . . I will put my laws into their
hearts, and in their minds will I write them"
