The medical profession now accepts<br />

psychoanalysis as a legitimate and respectable<br />

branch of medicine which provides <strong>the</strong>rapeutic<br />

assistance for mental illness. Scientific methods<br />

have been used to discover <strong>the</strong> way <strong>the</strong> mind<br />

functions. This has led to <strong>the</strong> conclusion that <strong>the</strong>re<br />

exists an unconscious mind which has a dynamic<br />

influence on <strong>the</strong> conscious mind. This premise<br />

comes to grips with <strong>the</strong> very motivating power in<br />

human life and conforms to <strong>the</strong> thoughts expressed<br />

in numerous Bible texts which assert that God is<br />

really interested in <strong>the</strong> heart, that is, <strong>the</strong> mind of<br />

man. This is in sharp contrast with <strong>the</strong> way humans<br />

evaluate by outward appearance.<br />

This provides, in <strong>the</strong> cleansing-of-<strong>the</strong>-sanctuary<br />

teaching, answers to what conversion should really<br />

accomplish. It must reach more than outward<br />

appearance. More than three decades ago a<br />

practicing Christian psychiatrist put <strong>the</strong> question:<br />
