This parable was but <strong>the</strong> prediction or rehearsal<br />
of <strong>the</strong> actual experience that was to follow.<br />
However, before <strong>the</strong> ultimate crime at Calvary,<br />
<strong>the</strong>re was a fur<strong>the</strong>r drama of reality which should<br />
have opened <strong>the</strong> eyes of <strong>the</strong> Jews to <strong>the</strong><br />
unconscious enmity hidden in <strong>the</strong>ir hearts.<br />
In John 8:33 and onwards, Christ is speaking to<br />
His brethren <strong>the</strong> Jews. In <strong>the</strong> dialogue <strong>the</strong>y insist<br />
that <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong> seed of Abraham; he was <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
fa<strong>the</strong>r and <strong>the</strong>y were never in bondage to anyonenot<br />
perceiving that Jesus meant that committing sin<br />
equals being a slave to sin. Jesus told <strong>the</strong>m that<br />
<strong>the</strong>y sought to kill Him, and if <strong>the</strong>y were<br />
Abraham's children as well as <strong>the</strong> children of <strong>the</strong><br />
"Fa<strong>the</strong>r, even God," which <strong>the</strong>y also professed,<br />
<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y would love Christ. He went on to tell<br />
<strong>the</strong>m that <strong>the</strong>y were of <strong>the</strong>ir fa<strong>the</strong>r "<strong>the</strong> devil."<br />
They replied that Jesus was of <strong>the</strong> devil, but He<br />
answered, "I have not a devil; but I honour my<br />
Fa<strong>the</strong>r," and He fur<strong>the</strong>r told <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>y did not<br />
know <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r, but that He knew <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r. The<br />
end of <strong>the</strong> passage confirms all that Jesus said for it<br />
points out, "<strong>the</strong>y took up stones to cast at him."<br />
