expression? Selfish trust prevails that in spite of<br />

everything to <strong>the</strong> contrary, God will somehow<br />

grant us a place where <strong>the</strong> cares, <strong>the</strong> burdens, <strong>the</strong><br />

taxes and <strong>the</strong> toothaches of this life will be at an<br />

end. In fairness we must ask, is personal gain <strong>the</strong><br />

goal of being a Christian and taking <strong>the</strong> name of<br />

Christ? Perhaps it is, until we recognize that sin is<br />

not <strong>the</strong> obstacle that stands between us and reward,<br />

but ra<strong>the</strong>r sin is <strong>the</strong> burden of pain and suffering<br />

that stands between God and a cleansed universe.<br />

The cleansing of <strong>the</strong> sanctuary is God's remedy for<br />

<strong>the</strong> problem.<br />

This may give insight into Paul's sermon on<br />

Mars' hill as he described God's patience: "The<br />

times of this ignorance God winked at; but now<br />

commandeth all men everywhere to repent" (Acts<br />

17:30). Why are we called to repent? Is <strong>the</strong>re some<br />

particular vice—repent of what?<br />

This same call to repentance was sounded by<br />

John <strong>the</strong> Baptist (Mat<strong>the</strong>w 3:2). It was enlarged<br />

and repeated by Christ immediately after His<br />

baptism and temptation in <strong>the</strong> wilderness. It was<br />
