m. Executive Dentist (63R).<br />

(1) Description of duties. The AOC 63R is a duty position only<br />

<strong>and</strong> is considered specialty immaterial. A dental officer assigned to<br />

this duty AOC functions in a variety of comm<strong>and</strong> or staff positions<br />

through the <strong>Army</strong> Dental Card System as stated in paragraph (4)<br />

below.<br />

(2) Special qualifications.<br />

(a) Must have been awarded a primary AOC as described in<br />

paragraph (c) through (m) above. Must maintain clinical proficiency<br />

in their AOC.<br />

(b) Should be a graduate of AMEDD Officer Advanced Course<br />

<strong>and</strong> the Comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> General Staff College.<br />

(c) Demonstrated success in previous leadership positions of increasing<br />

responsibility.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. Executive Dentist positions are<br />

coded LTC or COL.<br />

(4) Unique duty positions.<br />

(a) Dental Activity Comm<strong>and</strong>er/Director of Dental Services.<br />

(b) Dental Unit Comm<strong>and</strong>er.<br />

3–18. Veterinary Corps (64) (Proponent: Office of The<br />

Surgeon General)<br />

a. Branch description. The Veterinary Corps (VC) consists exclusively<br />

of commissioned officers who are qualified doctors of<br />

veterinary medicine. The Veterinary Corps encompasses those positions<br />

filled by officers in which the knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills required<br />

<strong>and</strong> the services performed are associated with the health <strong>and</strong> welfare<br />

of animals, the prevention of human illness from food or animal<br />

sources, the wholesomeness <strong>and</strong> quality of subsistence <strong>and</strong> experimental<br />

<strong>and</strong> comparative biomedical research. The functional areas<br />

of military medicine are: food, hygiene, safety <strong>and</strong> quality assurance,<br />

animal medicine, (primarily of government-owned animals),<br />

biomedical <strong>and</strong> subsistence research <strong>and</strong> development, prevention<br />

<strong>and</strong> control of animal disease of community health significance,<br />

preventive medicine, administration <strong>and</strong> teaching.<br />

b. Branch qualification. Have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine<br />

degree from a veterinary school in the United States or Canada<br />

accredited by the Council on Education of the Veterinary Medical<br />

promotion.<br />

c. Veterinarian (64A).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Recommends veterinary policies <strong>and</strong><br />

doctrine <strong>and</strong> formulates veterinary plans. Plans, organizes, executes<br />

research <strong>and</strong> development, test <strong>and</strong> evaluation activities at headquarters<br />

levels. Plans, directs, supervises veterinary activities within a<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>. Serves as senior veterinary staff officer at headquarters<br />

level.<br />

(2) Special qualifications. The AOC 64A is used for accession of<br />

Veterinary Corps Officers <strong>and</strong> identification of Veterinary specialty<br />

immaterial positions graded MAJ <strong>and</strong> above. The specialty immaterial<br />

for field grade will be coded 64A00. The incumbent must: be a<br />

field grade officer <strong>and</strong> must meet the qualifications from one of the<br />

MFA (75B through 75F) reflected in table 3-1; have demonstrated<br />

success in previous leadership positions of increasing responsibility;<br />

be a graduate of the AMEDD Officer Advanced Course; have successfully<br />

completed U.S. <strong>Army</strong> Comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> General Staff College,<br />

or possess board certification, or be board eligible to hold<br />

positions at the LTC level; <strong>and</strong> have received board certification <strong>and</strong><br />

CGSC to hold positions at the COL level. Board eligibility/certification<br />

requirements are waiverable for the RC.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. For positions graded MAJ <strong>and</strong><br />

above.<br />

3–19. <strong>Army</strong> Medical Specialist Corps (65) (Proponent:<br />

Office of The Surgeon General)<br />

a. Branch description. The <strong>Army</strong> Medical Specialist Corps is a<br />

special branch of the <strong>Army</strong> authorized by Section 3070 of Title 10<br />

U.S. Code <strong>and</strong> is part of the <strong>Army</strong> Medical Department. The Corps<br />

is organized in four distinct sections: <strong>Occupational</strong> Therapy, Physical<br />

Therapy, Dietetics, <strong>and</strong> Physician Assistant. It is composed exc<br />

Baylor University Physical Therapy Program, the Dietetic Internship<br />

Program <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Occupational</strong> Therapy Internship Program. These<br />

officers formulate policies <strong>and</strong> develop procedures for operation <strong>and</strong><br />

improvement of their respective activities within fixed <strong>and</strong> field<br />

medical environments. They conduct <strong>and</strong> supervise the operation of<br />

these occupational therapy, physical therapy <strong>and</strong> dietetic programs<br />

<strong>and</strong> establish <strong>and</strong> execute quality assurance programs which ensure<br />

optimal st<strong>and</strong>ards are maintained. All three specialties assist the<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>er in implementing health promotion, wellness <strong>and</strong> readiness<br />

programs within the military community; participate in readin<br />

e s s a n d m o b i l i z a t i o n e x e r c i s e s ; i n i t i a t e a n d c o n d u c t f i e l d a n d<br />

clinical research <strong>and</strong> scientific studies; plan, direct <strong>and</strong> supervise<br />

educational <strong>and</strong> skill development programs for officers, enlisted<br />

personnel, civilian students <strong>and</strong> perform as staff officers within<br />

AMEDD <strong>and</strong>/or <strong>Army</strong> organizations.<br />

b. Branch qualification. AR 135-101 lists qualifications for entry<br />

<strong>and</strong> professional development in this branch.<br />

c. <strong>Occupational</strong> Therapy (65A).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Plans, implements <strong>and</strong> supervises occupational<br />

therapy programs upon referral from medical officers <strong>and</strong><br />

other health care personnel. These are programs of remediation,<br />

health maintenance, prevention, vocational adjustments, consultation<br />

in hospital/MTF <strong>and</strong> community settings to enhance task performance<br />

of mentally, emotionally <strong>and</strong> physically h<strong>and</strong>icapped individuals.<br />

Services may include but are not limited to the following:<br />

Evaluation of competencies within life roles (for example, soldier,<br />

(MOS specific), occupational patterns, parent). Education <strong>and</strong> training<br />

to enhance habits, self care, coping skills <strong>and</strong> activities of daily<br />

living (ADL). Identification <strong>and</strong> evaluation of mental <strong>and</strong> physical<br />

stressors <strong>and</strong> teaching prevention <strong>and</strong> coping skills. Enhancement of<br />

p s y c h o s o c i a l s k i l l s . D e s i g n a n d d e v e l o p m e n t o f s p l i n t s , s p e c i a l<br />

e q u i p m e n t a n d t h e i r a p p l i c a t i o n t o d i s a b i l i t i e s . U s e o f p h y s i c a l<br />

reconditioning techniques to maintain fitness, hasten recovery, improve<br />

independence of self care <strong>and</strong> activities of daily living. The<br />

p r i m a r y w a r t i m e r o l e i s : U p p e r e x t r e m i t y n e u r o m u s c u l o s k e l e t a l<br />

skills evaluation <strong>and</strong> treatment. Prevention <strong>and</strong> treatment of combat<br />

stress, <strong>and</strong> battle fatigue. Reconditioning <strong>and</strong> treatment to increase<br />

physical fitness, duty related skills <strong>and</strong> work performance to minimize<br />

return to duty time.<br />

(2) Special qualifications.
