an. Peripheral Vascular Surgeon (61W).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Examines, diagnoses, <strong>and</strong> treats or prescribes<br />

course of treatment <strong>and</strong> surgery for patients having arterial,<br />

venous <strong>and</strong> lymphatic circulatory diseases <strong>and</strong> injuries, exclusive of<br />

lesions intrinsic to the heart, thoracic aorta, <strong>and</strong> intra-cranial vessels.<br />

(2) Special qualifications. Must have specialty training in this<br />

field at a level that is recognized by the OTSG.<br />

(a) Underst<strong>and</strong> military organization, mission, <strong>and</strong> environment.<br />

(b) Have had appropriate training <strong>and</strong> professional experience in<br />

this specialized field of surgery sufficient to meet minimum requirements<br />

established by DA.<br />

(c) Have Doctor of Medicine Degree or Doctor of Osteopathy<br />

Degree from a school acceptable to DA.<br />

(d) Have completed an approved program in vascular surgery, as<br />

recognized by The Surgeon General.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. None.<br />

(4) Unique duty positions. None.<br />

ao. Neurosurgeon (61Z).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Examines, diagnoses, <strong>and</strong> performs surgery<br />

as required in cases of patients suffering from disease, injury or<br />

disorder of nervous system.<br />

(2) Special qualifications. Must have specialty training in this<br />

field at a level that is recognized by the OTSG.<br />

(a) Have had adequate training <strong>and</strong> professional experience in<br />

this specialty in order to meet minimum requirements established by<br />

DA.<br />

(b) Have Doctor of Medicine Degree or Doctor of Osteopathy<br />

Degree from a school acceptable to DA.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. None.<br />

(4) Unique duty positions. None.<br />

ap. Emergency Physician (62A).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Examines, diagnoses, <strong>and</strong> treats or prescribes<br />

course of treatment for the initial phase of disease <strong>and</strong><br />

injuries.<br />

(2) Special qualifications. Must have specialty training in this<br />

field at a level that is recognized by the OTSG.<br />

(a) Have a Doctor of Medicine Degree or a Doctor of Osteopathy<br />

Degree from a school acceptable to DA.<br />

(b) Have had adequate training <strong>and</strong> professional experience in<br />

this specialty in order to meet minimum requirements established by<br />

DA.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. None.<br />

aq. Field Surgeon (62B).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Examines, diagnoses, <strong>and</strong> treats or prescribes<br />

course of treatment for the initial phase of battlefield disease<br />

<strong>and</strong> injury. Provides resuscitative <strong>and</strong> definitive care for injured <strong>and</strong><br />

w o u n d e d s o l d i e r s w i t h i n t h e c a p a b i l i t y o f t h e u n i t ’ s m e d i c a l<br />

element.<br />

(2) Special qualifications. Must have specialty training in this<br />

field at a level that is recognized by the OTSG.<br />

(a) Have a Doctor of Medicine Degree or a Doctor of Osteopathy<br />

Degree from a school acceptable to DA.<br />

(b) Have had adequate training <strong>and</strong> professional experience in<br />

this specialty in order to meet minimum requirements established by<br />

DA.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions.<br />

3–17. Dental Corps (63) (Proponent: Office of The<br />

Surgeon General)<br />

a. Branch description. The Dental Corps is a special branch of<br />

the <strong>Army</strong> composed of commissioned officers who are graduates of<br />

dental school accredited by the American Dental Association <strong>and</strong><br />

acceptable to The Surgeon General. To practice dentistry, a dental<br />

officer must possess a DDS or DMD degree <strong>and</strong> a valid, current<br />

license from one of the fifty United States, a U.S. Territory, or the<br />

District of Columbia. The unrestricted practice of dentistry requires<br />

individual credentialing. The mission of the Dental Corps in peace<br />

is to ensure that each soldier is in optimal oral health <strong>and</strong> prepared<br />

to deploy without becoming a non-combat dental casualty. A secondary<br />

mission is to provide dental health care to family members<br />

<strong>and</strong> other eligible beneficiaries of the military community per Public<br />

Law. In war, the mission of the Dental Corps is to conserve the<br />

fighting strength of soldiers by the restoration <strong>and</strong> preservation of<br />

oral health <strong>and</strong> function, <strong>and</strong> assisting in the emergency medical<br />

management of combat <strong>and</strong> noncombat casualties. In both peace <strong>and</strong><br />

war, the Dental Corps has the mission to support casualty identification<br />

through dental forensic identification operations. The principal<br />

functions performed by military dentists are: clinical <strong>and</strong> laboratory<br />

dentistry, comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> staff, teaching, <strong>and</strong> research. Teaching is<br />

identified as a separate function although it is an all pervasive<br />

element of the profession of dentistry <strong>and</strong> is implied in each of the<br />

functional areas.<br />

b. Branch qualifications. AR 135-101 list qualifications for entry<br />

into this branch.<br />

c. General Dentist (63A).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Examine, diagnose, <strong>and</strong> treat diseases,<br />

i n j u r i e s a n d d e f e c t s o f t e e t h , j a w s , o r a l c a v i t y , a n d s u p p o r t i n g<br />

structures.<br />

(2) Special qualifications. Must be able to perform the duties<br />

described above, <strong>and</strong> be a graduate of a dental school acceptable to<br />

The Surgeon General, Department of the <strong>Army</strong>.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. None.<br />

(4) Unique duty positions.<br />

(a) General Dental Officer.<br />

(b) Unit Dental Surgeon.<br />

(c) Clinic Chief.<br />

d. Comprehensive Dentist (63B).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Provides comprehensive oral health<br />

care to include the teaching of diagnostic/management skills, <strong>and</strong><br />

develops <strong>and</strong> executes treatment plans involving multiple dental<br />

specialties.<br />

(2) Special qualifications.<br />

(a) Completion of an Advanced Education in General Dentistry<br />

Program (Comprehensive Dentistry) of at least 2 consecutive years<br />

duration which is accredited by the American Dental Association<br />

<strong>and</strong> acceptable to The Surgeon General.<br />

(b) Be able to perform duties of AOC 63A.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. For positions coded MAJ <strong>and</strong><br />

above.<br />

(4) Unique duty positions.<br />

(a) Comprehensive Dental Officer.<br />

(b) Chief, General Dentistry Team.<br />

(c) Comm<strong>and</strong>er, Medical Detachment (Dental Service).<br />

(d) Program Director, Assistant Program Director, Training Officer;<br />

Advanced Education in General Dentistry.<br />

(e) Instructor, Academy of Health Sciences.<br />

(f) Comprehensive Dentistry Consultant, OTSG.<br />

(g) Unit Dental Surgeon.<br />

(h) Clinic Chief.<br />

e. Periodontist (63D).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Examines, diagnoses, <strong>and</strong> treats or prescribes<br />

treatment for the supporting <strong>and</strong> surrounding tissues of the<br />

teeth or their substitutes <strong>and</strong> performs implantation or transplantation<br />

of teeth or their replacement analogues.<br />

(2) Special qualifications.<br />

(a) Completion of an Advanced Specialty Education Program in<br />

Periodontics which is accredited by the American Dental Association<br />

<strong>and</strong> acceptable to The Surgeon General.<br />

(b) Be able to perform duties of AOC 63A.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. For positions coded MAJ <strong>and</strong><br />

above.<br />

(4) Unique duty positions.
