10–284. 98J—Electronic Intelligence Interceptor/Analyst
(ELINT Intcp/Analyst) CMF 98
a. Major duties. The electronics intelligence (ELINT) interceptor/
a n a l y s t p e r f o r m s a n d s u p e r v i s e s d e t e c t i o n , a c q u i s i t i o n , l o c a t i o n ,
identification, exploitation, and reporting of foreign ELINT at division,
corps, and echelon above corps (EAC). Performs collection
management. Duties for MOS 98J at each skill level are:
(1) MOSC 98J1O. Deploys, installs, and operates ELINT collection
systems. Searches for selected categories or classes of electrooptic
or foreign instrumentation signals (FIS). Operates communications
equipment for SIGINT reporting and coordination. Uses technical
references and equipment to record and analyze intercepted
signals. Uses specialized data base and technical references to identify
intercepted signals. Reports electronic order of battle (EOB)
information and maintains a technical data base.
(2) MOSC 98J2O. Performs duties shown in preceding skill level
and provides guidance to subordinate soldiers. Supervises team level

(3) MOSC 98J3O. Performs duties shown in preceding skill level
and provides guidance to subordinate soldiers. Supervises squad
level intercept and analysis of ELINT signals. Interprets and analyzes
technical documents and reports. Assigns missions and intercepts
complex signals. Implements SIGINT/EW emergency action
plans.
(4) MOSC 98J4O. Performs duties shown in preceding skill level
and provides guidance to subordinate soldiers. Supervises ELINT
intercept and analysis activities at platoon level. Interprets and imp
l e m e n t s E L I N T c o l l e c t i o n t a s k i n g . I d e n t i f i e s a n d a l l o c a t e s r e -
sources to accomplish the collection effort. Coordinates collection
activities with other intelligence disciplines. Determines mission objectives
and priorities.
(5) MOSC 98J5O. Performs duties shown in preceding skill level
and provides guidance to subordinate grade soldiers. Supervises
immediate subordinates in SIGINT operations and command intelligence
procedures. Coordinates tactical and strategic ELINT and
provides appraisals of intelligence products, activities and operations.
Develops unit intelligence training strategy.
b. Physical demands rating and qualifications for initial award of
M O S . E L I N T i n t e r c e p t o r / a n a l y s t s m u s t p o s s e s s t h e f o l l o w i n g
qualifications:
(1) A physical demands rating of moderately heavy.
(2) A physical profile of 222221.
(3) Normal color vision.
(4) A minimum score of 105 in aptitude area ST.
(5) The soldier must meet TOP SECRET security clearance and
S e n s i t i v e C o m p a r t m e n t I n f o r m a t i o n ( S C I ) a c c e s s e l i g i b i l i t y
requirements.
(6) A high school graduate or equivalent.

(7) Never been a member of the U.S. Peace Corps, except as
specified in AR 614-200, chapter 1.
(8) No information in military personnel, Provost Marshal, intelligence,
or medical records which will prevent the granting of security
clearance under AR 380-67.
(9) No record of conviction by court-martial.
(10) No record of conviction by a civil court for any offense
other than minor traffic violations.
(11) The soldier must be a U.S. citizen.
(12) Soldier and spouse must not have immediate family members
who reside in a country within whose boundaries physical or
mental coercion is known to be common practice, either against-
(a) Persons accused of or acting in the interest of the United
States or
(b) The relatives of such persons to whom they may reasonably
be considered to be bound by ties of affection, kinship, or obligation.
Near relatives will also include uncles, aunts, grandparents,
father-in-law, mother-in-law, and relationships corresponding to any
of the above persons in loco parentis (AR 630-5, para 6-2b).
(13) Have neither commercial nor vested interest in a country
within whose boundaries physical or mental coercion is known to be
a common practice against persons acting in the interest of the
United States. This requirement applies to the soldier’s spouse as
well.
(14) Meet career management and development criteria contained
in AR 614-200.
(15) Formal training (completion of MOS 98J course under the
auspices of U.S. Army Intelligence Center mandatory.
(16) Be advised that due to the nature of training and assignments,
temporary restrictions may be placed on foreign travel both
during and after the term of service.

a. Major duties. The signals collection/identification analyst perf
o r m s a n d s u p e r v i s e s c o l l e c t i o n , i d e n t i f i c a t i o n , e x p l o i t a t i o n , a n d
analysis of foreign radioteletype, facsimile, and data communications.
Performs collection management. Duties for MOS 98K at
each skill level are:
(1) MOSC 98K1O. Operates signals intelligence/electronic warf
a r e ( S I G I N T / E W ) e q u i p m e n t a n d p r e p a r e s l o g s a n d t e c h n i c a l
reports. Searches radio spectrum to collect and identify target communications.
Performs elementary signals analysis to determine signal
parameters for identification and processing.
(2) MOSC 98K2O. Performs duties shown in preceding skill level
and provides guidance to subordinate soldiers. Operates SIGINT/
EW equipment, assists in the establishment of operational sites,
maintains technical data bases in support of collection operations.
Recognizes and reports items of intelligence interest. Performs intermediate
signals analysis to determine signal parameters for identific
a t i o n . P e r f o r m s c o l l e c t i o n m a n a g e m e n t f u n c t i o n i n s u p p o r t o f
c o l l e c t i o n o p e r a t i o n s . Q u a l i t y c o n t r o l s p r o c e s s i n g a n d r e p o r t i n g
procedures.
(3) MOSC 98K3O. Performs duties shown in preceding skill level
and provides guidance to subordinate soldiers. Supervises collection
and identification activities and allocates collection resources to
s u p p o r t / m e e t m i s s i o n r e q u i r e m e n t s . C o o r d i n a t e s i n t e r a c t i o n w i t h
other data collection and processing activities. Prepares technical
