b. Description of duties: Supervises <strong>and</strong> manages the veterinary<br />

services at MEDCEN/MEDDAC. Serves as staff officer for veterinary<br />

services at DoD level. Plans, coordinates, <strong>and</strong> directs veterinary<br />

preventive medicine program to control animal <strong>and</strong> foodborne diseases<br />

of public health interest. Coordinates <strong>and</strong> directs employment of<br />

veterinary administrative procedures, <strong>and</strong> investigates conditions<br />

affecting the health of the installation as directed. Effects liaison with<br />

Federal, State, <strong>and</strong> local government agencies concerned with<br />

veterinary matters. Provides consultation on matters of management<br />

<strong>and</strong> epidemiologic significance of wildlife on military reservations.<br />

c. Qualifications: The officer must have completed post doctoral<br />

training either in food technology, veterinary laboratory services, public<br />

health, or possess equivalent experience. Must be a graduate of the<br />

AMEDD Officer Advanced Course. Must have successfully completed<br />

U.S. <strong>Army</strong> CGSC, or possess board certification, or be board eligible to<br />

hold positions at the Lieutenant Colonel level. Must have received board<br />

certification <strong>and</strong> successfully completed CGSC to hold positions at the<br />

COL level. For the RC, award of AOC 75B will occur at promotion to<br />

MAJ. For the RC, requirement for <strong>Military</strong> Education will be per AR 35-<br />

155. Board eligibility/certification requirements are waiverable for the<br />

RC.<br />

d. Restrictions: Only for use by AMEDD Field Grade Officer within AOC<br />

64A. In exceptional cases the grade requirement may be waived for CPT<br />

by The Surgeon General.<br />

Title: Veterinary Laboratory Animal Medicine<br />

Proponent: OTSG<br />

a. Description of positions: Positions include the following: Director,<br />

Laboratory Animal Medicine; Director, Research Program; Chief,<br />

Research <strong>and</strong> Development Department/Division/Branch/Service.<br />

b. Description of duties: Plans, directs, <strong>and</strong> participates in the care,<br />

treatment, <strong>and</strong> management of laboratory animals <strong>and</strong> other<br />

government-owned animals. Duties include the design <strong>and</strong> operation of<br />

Disease Prevention <strong>and</strong> Control Program, zoonosis control, design of<br />

facilities <strong>and</strong> equipment, selection <strong>and</strong> utilization of animal models, <strong>and</strong><br />

the design <strong>and</strong> operation of research projects.<br />

c. Qualifications: The officer must have completed post-doctoral<br />

training applicable to laboratory animals <strong>and</strong> their utilization, or possess<br />

equivalent experience. Must be a graduate of the AMEDD Officer<br />

Advanced Course. Must have successfully completed U.S. <strong>Army</strong> CGSC,<br />

or possess board certification, or be board eligible to hold positions at the<br />

LTC level. Must have received board certification <strong>and</strong> successfully<br />

completed CGSC to hold positions at the COL level.<br />

Title: Veterinary Pathology<br />

Veterinary Clinical Investigation Service MEDCEN: Director, Research<br />

Program; Chief, Research <strong>and</strong> Development Department/Division/<br />

Branch/Service.<br />

b. Description of duties: Plans, supervises, <strong>and</strong> conducts various<br />

diagnostic procedures <strong>and</strong> conducts research in the field of veterinary<br />

<strong>and</strong> comparative pathology.<br />

c. Qualifications: The officer must have completed post doctoral<br />

training in veterinary pathology or possess equivalent experience. Must<br />

be a graduate of the AMEDD Officer Advanced Course. Must have<br />

successfully completed U.S. <strong>Army</strong> CGSC, or possess board certification,<br />

or be board eligible to hold positions at the LTC level. Must have<br />

received board certification <strong>and</strong> successfully completed CGSC to hold<br />

positions at the COL level.<br />

Principle Research Investigator.<br />

b. Description of duties: Plans, directs, executes, manages or<br />

conducts research in various Research, Development <strong>and</strong> Acquisition<br />

(RDA) programs addressing Joint Service <strong>and</strong> <strong>Army</strong>-specific<br />

requirement for medical material <strong>and</strong> in support of <strong>Army</strong> Science <strong>and</strong><br />

Technology Objectives. Serves as Comm<strong>and</strong>er or Deputy Comm<strong>and</strong>er<br />

of a medical RDA laboratory or activity responsible for the execution of<br />

specific aspects of the <strong>Army</strong> RDA technology base research or<br />

advanced development programs. Serves as Director of an RDA<br />

program responsible for strategic planning programming, direction <strong>and</strong><br />

defense. Serves as a research manager responsible for management of<br />

fiscal <strong>and</strong> human resources in the execution of research projects at an<br />

RDA laboratory. Serves as a principle investigator responsible for the<br />

conduct <strong>and</strong> reporting of individual specialty-related research efforts at<br />

an RDA laboratory.<br />

c. Qualifications: The officer must have completed post doctoral<br />

training at the PhD level in Microbiology, Immunology, Physiology,<br />

Pharmacology, Toxicology, Parasitology or a related subdiscipline. Must<br />

be a graduate of the AMEDD Officer Advanced Course <strong>and</strong> must have<br />

successfully completed CGSC (or possess board certification, or be<br />

Board eligible) to hold positions at the LTC level. Must have successfully<br />

completed CGSC, hold a PhD degree <strong>and</strong> be an accomplished scientist<br />

to attain the grade of COL.<br />

d. Restrictions: For use by AMEDD officers within Branch 64.<br />

Title: Veterinary Clinical Medicine<br />

Proponent: OTSG<br />

a. Description of positions: Positions include the<br />

following:Comm<strong>and</strong>er, Veterinary TOE Unit; Chief, Clinical Services<br />

Department/Division/Branch; Instructor, Veterinary Services; Veterinary<br />

Staff Officers.<br />

b. Description of duties: Provides medical <strong>and</strong> surgical care of<br />

government-owned animals as well as privately-owned animals as<br />

authorized. Makes clinical observations <strong>and</strong> diagnoses <strong>and</strong> serves as<br />

clinical consultant in specialty area as required. Functions in a variety of<br />

clinically oriented roles involving international studies, nation assistance/<br />

civil affairs <strong>and</strong>/or Special Forces.<br />

c. Qualifications: The officer must have completed an American Board<br />

of Specialties of the AVMA approved post doctoral training program in a<br />

clinical discipline such as internal medicine, veterinary surgery,<br />

veterinary internal medicine, bovine medicine, etc., or be Board certified<br />

in a clinical discipline recognized by the American Board of Specialties of<br />

the AVMA. Must be a graduate of the AMEDD Officers Advanced<br />

Course. Must have successfully completed CGSC, or possess board<br />

certification <strong>and</strong> successfully completed CGSC to hold positions at the<br />

COL level. For the Reserve Components (RC), requirements for military<br />

education will be per AR 35-155. Board eligibility/certification<br />

requirements are waiverable for the RC.<br />

d. Restrictions: For use by AMEDD officers within Branch 64.<br />

3–16. Medical Corps (60-62) (Proponent: Office of The<br />

Surgeon General)<br />

a. Branch description. The Medical Corps is one of the six officer<br />

branches of the <strong>Army</strong> Medical Department (AMEDD) <strong>and</strong> is a<br />

special branch of the <strong>Army</strong>. The Medical Corps is composed exclusively<br />

of commissioned officers who have a degree of Doctor of<br />

Medicine from medical school or Doctor of Osteopathy from osteopathic<br />

school acceptable to HQDA. The Medical Corps encompasses<br />

those specialties filled by officers who are responsible for the<br />

professional care of the sick <strong>and</strong> injured. These physicians maintain<br />

the health of the <strong>Army</strong> <strong>and</strong> conserve its fighting strength. Care is<br />

provided for the sick <strong>and</strong> injured in peacetime while, at the same<br />

time preparations are made for health support of the <strong>Army</strong> in time<br />

of war.<br />

b. Branch qualifications. AR 135-101 contains the details of eligibility<br />

requirements for appointment into the Medical Corps.<br />

c. Operational Medicine (60A).
