10–255. 91T—Animal Care Specialist (Animal Care Sp),<br />

CMF 91<br />

a. Major duties. The animal care specialist supervises or provides<br />

the care, management, treatment, <strong>and</strong> sanitary conditions for animals,<br />

with a primary responsibility of prevention <strong>and</strong> control of<br />

diseases transmitted from animal to man <strong>and</strong> comprehensive care for<br />

government owned animals. Duties for MOS 91T at each level of<br />

skill are:<br />

(1) MOSC 91T1O. Provides routine daily care for animals in<br />

veterinary treatment or research <strong>and</strong> development facilities. Obtains<br />

medical history from owners <strong>and</strong>/or h<strong>and</strong>lers <strong>and</strong> measures <strong>and</strong><br />

records animal vital signs. Performs physical examinations to detect<br />

obvious abnormalities <strong>and</strong> reports findings to veterinarian. Positions<br />

a n d r e s t r a i n s a n i m a l s f o r e x a m i n a t i o n a n d t r e a t m e n t . C a l c u l a t e s<br />

doses <strong>and</strong> administers oral <strong>and</strong> topical medications as directed by<br />

the veterinarian. Maintains sanitary conditions for all components of<br />

the veterinary treatment facilities to include operating room <strong>and</strong><br />

equipment. Assists veterinarian in surgical procedures <strong>and</strong> performs<br />

euthanasia when instructed by veterinarian. Cleans, debrides, <strong>and</strong><br />

sutures superficial wounds. Collects, preserves, <strong>and</strong> prepares blood,<br />

urine, feces, skin scrapings, <strong>and</strong> post mortem specimens for shipment<br />

<strong>and</strong> evaluation. Performs routine diagnostic laboratory tests<br />

such as fecal smears, urinalysis, blood counts, <strong>and</strong> chemistries. Records<br />

laboratory test results. Takes <strong>and</strong> develops radiographs of<br />

designated animal body parts. Initiates <strong>and</strong> maintains animal health<br />

records, immunization records, animal registration files, animal bite<br />

case reports, <strong>and</strong> other administrative office files.<br />

(2) MOSC 91T2O. Performs duties shown at preceding skill level.<br />

Provides technical guidance, management, <strong>and</strong> training to junior<br />

personnel. Performs advanced emergency medical procedures on<br />

animals such as triage, tracheotomy, burn <strong>and</strong> poison management,<br />

venous cutdown, <strong>and</strong> insertion of stomach tubes. Operates mechanical<br />

respirators, heart monitors, <strong>and</strong> gas sterilizer apparatus. Supervises<br />

supply management <strong>and</strong> patient administration procedures.<br />

Prepares budgets, trains h<strong>and</strong>lers in emergency care of animals, <strong>and</strong><br />

assists on research protocol teams.<br />

(3) MOSC 91T3O. Performs duties of <strong>and</strong> supervises the functions<br />

of preceding skill levels. Develops <strong>and</strong> establishes st<strong>and</strong>ard<br />

operating procedures for operations of veterinary treatment facilities.<br />

Assists in scheduling, conducting, <strong>and</strong> evaluating training of veterinary<br />

service enlisted personnel. Reviews, consolidates, <strong>and</strong> prepares<br />

technical reports. Performs as a liaison for the veterinary officer to<br />

interact with installation medical authorities, installation comm<strong>and</strong>ers,<br />

<strong>and</strong> civilian agencies.<br />

(4) MOSC 91T4O. Schedules, monitors, <strong>and</strong> evaluates the unit<br />

training program <strong>and</strong> maintains unit/individual training records. Assists<br />

the comm<strong>and</strong>er in preparing, monitoring, <strong>and</strong> evaluating the<br />

unit operations plan. Compiles <strong>and</strong> evaluates management <strong>and</strong> personnel<br />

data. Reviews operations of veterinary service to ensure<br />

compliance with laws <strong>and</strong> regulations regarding humane care <strong>and</strong><br />

treatment of animals. Monitors laboratory animal procurement procedures<br />

<strong>and</strong> serves on laboratory animal protocol boards. Provides<br />

technical assistance in planning, staffing, <strong>and</strong> modifying existing<br />

animal facilities.<br />

b. Physical dem<strong>and</strong>s rating <strong>and</strong> qualifications for initial award of<br />

M O S . A n i m a l c a r e s p e c i a l i s t s m u s t p o s s e s s t h e f o l l o w i n g<br />

qualifications:<br />

(1) A physical dem<strong>and</strong>s rating of moderately heavy.<br />

(2) A physical profile of 222221.<br />

(3) Normal color vision.<br />

(4) Minimum score of 95 in aptitude area ST.<br />

(5) Successful completion <strong>and</strong> credit for high school course in<br />

one of the biological sciences.<br />

(6) High school diploma/GED.<br />

(7) Formal training (completion of MOS 91T course conducted<br />

under the auspices of the AHS) m<strong>and</strong>atory or meet the civilian<br />

acquired skills criteria listed in AR 601-210, chapter 7.<br />

c. Additional skill identifiers.<br />

(1) P5—Master Fitness Trainer.<br />

(2) 2S—Battle Staff Operations (skill level 3 <strong>and</strong> above).<br />

10–256. 91V—Respiratory Specialist (Respiratory SP),<br />

CMF 91<br />

a. Major duties. The respiratory specialist assists with the management<br />

of a respiratory unit or administers respiratory therapy <strong>and</strong><br />

performs pulmonary function tests under the supervision of a physician<br />

or nurse anesthetist. Duties for MOS 91V at each level of skill<br />

are:<br />

(1) MOSC 91V2O. Administers respiratory therapy <strong>and</strong> performs<br />

pulmonary function tests.<br />

(2) MOSC 91V3O. Administers respiratory therapy <strong>and</strong> performs<br />

pulmonary function tests.<br />

(3) MOSC 91V4O. Administers respiratory therapy <strong>and</strong> performs<br />

pulmonary function tests.<br />

b. Physical dem<strong>and</strong>s rating <strong>and</strong> qualifications for initial award of<br />

M O S . R e s p i r a t o r y s p e c i a l i s t s m u s t p o s s e s s t h e f o l l o w i n g<br />

qualifications:<br />

(1) A physical dem<strong>and</strong>s rating—N/A.<br />

(2) A physical profile of 222221.<br />

(3) Normal color vision.<br />

(4) A minimum score of 105 in aptitude area ST.<br />

(5) High school or college level algebra with a C or higher<br />

within the last 5 years. College chemistry with C or higher.<br />

(6) Formal training (completion of MOS 91B medical specialist<br />

training <strong>and</strong> MOS 91V course conducted under the auspices of the<br />

AMEDD Center <strong>and</strong> School) m<strong>and</strong>atory or meet the civilian acquired<br />

skills criteria listed in AR601-210.<br />

c. Additional skill identifiers.<br />

10–256.1. 91X—Mental Health Specialist (Mental Health<br />

Sp), CMF 91<br />

a. Major duties. The mental health specialist, under the supervision<br />

of a psychiatrist, social worker, psychiatric nurse, psychologist,<br />

assists with the management <strong>and</strong> treatment in/out-patient mental<br />

health activities, during peace time or mobilization; collects <strong>and</strong><br />

records psychosocial <strong>and</strong> physical data; counsels <strong>and</strong> treats clients/<br />

patients with personal, behavioral or mental health problems. Duties<br />

for MOS 91X at each skill level are:<br />

(1) MOSC 91X1O. Under close supervision, collects <strong>and</strong> records<br />

psychosocial <strong>and</strong> physical data, assists with care <strong>and</strong> treatment of<br />

psychiatric, drug <strong>and</strong> alcohol patients, <strong>and</strong> counsels clients/patients<br />

with personal, behavioral or psychological problems.<br />

(2) MOSC 91X2O. Collects <strong>and</strong> records psychosocial <strong>and</strong> physical<br />

data <strong>and</strong> assists with care <strong>and</strong> treatment of psychiatric, <strong>and</strong><br />

drug <strong>and</strong> alcohol patients, <strong>and</strong> counsels clients/patients with personal,<br />

behavioral or psychological problems.<br />

(3) MOSC 91X3O. Collects <strong>and</strong> records psychosocial <strong>and</strong> physical<br />

data <strong>and</strong> assists with direct treatment of psychiatric, drug <strong>and</strong><br />

alcohol patients, with the management of psychiatric in/out patient<br />

settings, counsels clients/patients with personal, behavioral or psychological<br />

problems <strong>and</strong> assists with management of mental health<br />

activity.<br />

(4) MOSC 91X4O. Assists professional staff with management<br />

<strong>and</strong> supervision of patient treatment in inpatient <strong>and</strong> outpatient mental<br />

health activities. Assists professional staff in the supervision of
