10–246. 91E—Dental Specialist (Dental Spc) CMF 91<br />

a. Major duties. The dental specialist assists the dental officer in<br />

prevention, examination, <strong>and</strong> treatment of diseases of teeth <strong>and</strong> oral<br />

region, or assists with the management of dental treatment facilities.<br />

Duties for MOS 91E at each level of skill are:<br />

(1) MOSC 91E1O. Patient care. Receives <strong>and</strong> seats patients. Prepares<br />

dental operatory, selects <strong>and</strong> arranges instruments, measures<br />

<strong>and</strong> records temperature, blood pressure <strong>and</strong> pulse, <strong>and</strong> assists dentist<br />

during patient exams. Assists with administration of anesthesia<br />

<strong>and</strong> in placement <strong>and</strong> removal of sutures. Prepares restorative <strong>and</strong><br />

impression materials. Performs Cardiopulmonary resuscitation <strong>and</strong><br />

operates resuscitative equipment. Disposes of contaminated waste.<br />

Dental radiography. Loads <strong>and</strong> unloads radiographic film cassettes,<br />

protects self <strong>and</strong> patient from excessive ionizing radiation exposure,<br />

exposes bitewing periapical, occlusal film, panoramic radiographic<br />

d a r k r o o m p r o c e d u r e s . A d m i n i s t r a t i o n , s u p p l y , a n d m a i n t e n a n c e .<br />

Schedules appointments, retrieves, files, <strong>and</strong> maintains dental records.<br />

Receives, stores, packs, unpacks <strong>and</strong> safeguards dental supplies<br />

<strong>and</strong> equipment. Performs preventive maintenance on dental<br />

equipment. Sets up, maintains, disassembles <strong>and</strong> packs dental field<br />

equipment shelters.<br />

(2) MOSC 91E2O. Assists dental officer in prevention, examination,<br />

<strong>and</strong> treatment of diseases of teeth <strong>and</strong> oral region. Assists <strong>and</strong><br />

advises subordinate personnel on supply economy procedures. Supervises<br />

the packing, unpacking, loading, setting up <strong>and</strong> storage of<br />

dental unit field equipment <strong>and</strong> shelters. Assists in presentation of<br />

training programs. Prepares the site for field dental treatment facilities.<br />

Assists with technical <strong>and</strong> administrative management of dental<br />

treatment facilities under the supervision of a dental NCO.<br />

(3) MOSC 91E3O. Supervises activities of dental teams, sections,<br />

or clinics in small fixed or mobile dental facilities. Provides technical<br />

guidance. Ensures comfort, safety, <strong>and</strong> cleanliness of dental<br />

facilities. Determines personnel requirements, establishes work priorities,<br />

organizes work schedules <strong>and</strong> assigns duties. Instructs subordinates<br />

in work techniques <strong>and</strong> procedures. Evaluates personnel<br />

performance, counsels personnel <strong>and</strong> prepares evaluation reports.<br />

Supervises movements <strong>and</strong> establishment of field dental units. Prepares<br />

unit NBC plans <strong>and</strong> supervises procedures. Prepares administrative,<br />

technical, patient <strong>and</strong> manpower reports. Establishes <strong>and</strong><br />

monitors stock level for supplies <strong>and</strong> equipment. Requisitions <strong>and</strong><br />

maintains dental supplies <strong>and</strong> equipment.<br />

(4) MOSC 91E4O. Supervises activities of dental sections, clinics,<br />

medium sized fixed or mobile dental facilities. Prepares periodic<br />

<strong>and</strong> special reports concerning personnel, patients, dental care <strong>and</strong><br />

treatment operations. Supervises <strong>and</strong> plans training in general military<br />

<strong>and</strong> MOS specific subjects. Coordinates the administrative activities<br />

<strong>and</strong> prepares <strong>and</strong> dental treatment facility SOP. Revises<br />

topography of selected operational site <strong>and</strong> advises on the location<br />

of field treatment <strong>and</strong> sanitation facilities. Plans, develops <strong>and</strong> supervises<br />

loading plans for dental field organizations. Performs staff,<br />

budget <strong>and</strong> advisory duties.<br />

(5) MOSC 91E5O. Serves as principal NCO of staff section,<br />

large dental clinic, dental laboratory, or dental organization. Supervises<br />

general administrative functions <strong>and</strong> coordinates personnel assignments.<br />

Evaluates training programs <strong>and</strong> requirements. Assists<br />

Comm<strong>and</strong>er in the administrative <strong>and</strong> technical supervision of subordinate<br />

dental facilities. Assists in the planning, development <strong>and</strong><br />

management of the comm<strong>and</strong> budget programs. Coordinates <strong>and</strong><br />

supervises unit preventive maintenance <strong>and</strong> supply programs. Assists<br />

in the development of operational plans. Provides technical<br />

assistance in planning <strong>and</strong> staffing of facilities.<br />

b. Physical dem<strong>and</strong>s rating <strong>and</strong> qualifications for initial award of<br />

MOS. Dental specialists must possess the following qualifications:<br />

(1) A physical dem<strong>and</strong>s rating of moderately heavy.<br />

(2) A physical profile of 222221.<br />

(3) Normal color vision.<br />

(4) A minimum score of 95 in aptitude area ST.<br />

(5) Formal training (completion of MOS 91E course, or the RC<br />

AOCP nonresident—two week resident course, conducted under the<br />

auspices of the AHS) m<strong>and</strong>atory or meet the civilian acquired skills<br />

criteria listed in AR 601-210.<br />

c. Additional skill identifiers.<br />

(1) N5—Dental Laboratory Specialist.<br />

(2) P5—Master Fitness Trainer.<br />

(3) X2—Preventive Dentistry Specialty.<br />

(4) 2S—Battle Staff Operations (level 3 <strong>and</strong> above).<br />

(5) 4A—Reclassification Training.<br />

a . M a j o r d u t i e s . T h e m e d i c a l l a b o r a t o r y s p e c i a l i s t p e r f o r m s<br />

bloodbanking procedures <strong>and</strong> elementary <strong>and</strong> advanced examinations<br />

of biological <strong>and</strong> environmental specimens to aid in the diagn<br />

o s i s , t r e a t m e n t , a n d p r e v e n t i o n o f d i s e a s e a n d o t h e r m e d i c a l<br />

disorders. MOS 91K personnel require manual dexterity <strong>and</strong> no<br />

aversion to the sight of blood or needles. Duties for MOS 91K at<br />

each level of skill are:<br />

(1) MOSC 91K1O. Performs elementary clinical laboratory <strong>and</strong><br />

bloodbanking procedures.<br />

(2) MOSC 91K2O. Performs elementary bloodbanking <strong>and</strong> clinical<br />

laboratory procedures in hematology, immunohematology, biochemistry,<br />

serology, bacteriology, parasitology, <strong>and</strong> urinalysis.<br />

(3) MOSC 91K3O. Performs advanced procedures in all phases<br />

of bloodbanking <strong>and</strong> clinical laboratory testing including virology,<br />

mycology, toxicology, <strong>and</strong> histology or supervises small medical<br />

laboratory.<br />

(4) MOSC 91K4O. Supervises medium size medical laboratory.<br />

(5) MOSC 91K5O. Supervises large medical laboratory activities.<br />

b. Physical dem<strong>and</strong>s rating <strong>and</strong> qualifications for initial award of<br />

MOS. Medical laboratory specialists must possess the following<br />

qualifications:<br />

(1) A physical dem<strong>and</strong>s rating of moderately heavy.<br />

(2) A physical profile of 323222.<br />

(3) Normal color vision.<br />

(4) A minimum score of 110 in aptitude area ST.<br />

(5) Successful completion of high school level chemistry <strong>and</strong><br />

algebra or proficiency exams recognized by an <strong>Army</strong> Education<br />

Center. Official high school/college transcripts required.<br />

(6) Formal training (completion of MOSC 91K1O courses for<br />

skill level 1 in MOSC 91K1O conducted under the auspices of the<br />

AMEDD Center <strong>and</strong> School) is m<strong>and</strong>atory or meet the civilian<br />

acquired skill criteria listed in AR 601-210.<br />

c. Additional skill identifiers.<br />

(1) M2—Cytology Specialist.<br />

(2) M4—Blood Donor Center Operations.<br />

(3) P5—Master Fitness Trainer.<br />

(4) P9—Biological Sciences Assistant.<br />
