10–231. 88H—Cargo Specialist, CMF 88<br />

a. Major duties. The cargo specialist transfers or supervises the<br />

transfer of passengers <strong>and</strong> cargo to <strong>and</strong> from air, l<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> water<br />

transport by manual <strong>and</strong> mechanical methods. Duties for MOS 88H<br />

at each level of skill are:<br />

(1) MOSC 88H1O. Checks, tallies, <strong>and</strong> documents cargo utilizing<br />

both manual <strong>and</strong> automated data processing systems. Rigs ships’<br />

gear as part of a team. Loads <strong>and</strong> unloads supplies <strong>and</strong> equipment<br />

from ships, docks, beaches, railheads, boxcars, warehouses, motor<br />

vehicles, <strong>and</strong> aircraft (to include internal <strong>and</strong> external helicopter<br />

loading). Operates <strong>and</strong> maintains all types <strong>and</strong> sizes of winches,<br />

cranes, <strong>and</strong> forklifts.<br />

(2) MOSC 88H2O. Assigns cargo h<strong>and</strong>lers, signal <strong>and</strong> winch<br />

operators to duty stations. Provides technical guidance to subordinates.<br />

Inspects cargo, supervises cargo checking <strong>and</strong> hatch operations,<br />

controls aircraft loading <strong>and</strong> unloading (to include helicopter<br />

external sling loading operations), oversees railhead tie-down crews,<br />

directs container stuffing <strong>and</strong> unstuffing, plans warehouse storage,<br />

<strong>and</strong> manages crane operations. Supervises operator maintenance for<br />

cargo h<strong>and</strong>ling equipment such as cranes <strong>and</strong> forklifts. Enforces<br />

safety practices <strong>and</strong> documentation procedures.<br />

(3) MOSC 88H3O. Plans work schedules for terminal operations,<br />

airfield arrival/departure control groups, (to include passengers) <strong>and</strong><br />

container/trailer transfer points. Utilizes stowage plans, aircraft load<br />

operations gear. Enforces safety practices. Prepares, consolidates,<br />

unit activities.<br />

(4) MOSC 88H4O. Supervises <strong>and</strong> manages work force. Coordinatesadministrative<br />

matters, communications activities, <strong>and</strong> traini<br />

n g p r o g r a m s . P r e p a r e s t a c t i c a l p l a n s a n d t r a i n i n g m a t e r i e l s .<br />

Provides staff supervision, policy, <strong>and</strong> guidance for personnel <strong>and</strong><br />

cargo movement by air, rail, motor, <strong>and</strong> water transport.<br />

b. Physical dem<strong>and</strong>s rating <strong>and</strong> qualifications for initial award of<br />

MOS. Cargo specialists must possess the following qualifications:<br />

(1) A physical dem<strong>and</strong>s rating of very heavy.<br />

(2) A physical profile of 211222.<br />

(3) Color discrimination of red/green.<br />

(4) A minimum score of 90 in aptitude area GM.<br />

(5) MOS qualification may be attained by meeting the civilian<br />

acquired skills criteria listed in AR 601-210.<br />

10–232. 88K—Watercraft Operator, CMF 88<br />

a. Major duties. The watercraft operator performs mariner duties<br />

<strong>and</strong> supervises other personnel on <strong>Army</strong> watercraft <strong>and</strong> amphibians.<br />

Duties for MOS 88K at each level of skill are:<br />

(1) MOSC 88K1O. Docks <strong>and</strong> undocks the vessels. Drops <strong>and</strong><br />

weighs the vessel anchor. St<strong>and</strong>s lookout <strong>and</strong> helm watches. Ident<br />

i f i e s a n d i n t e r p r e t s s i n g l e - l e t t e r i n t e r n a t i o n a l c o d e s i g n a l f l a g s .<br />

Sends <strong>and</strong> receives messages with radios, beacons, <strong>and</strong> signal flags.<br />

Operates <strong>and</strong> maintains lifeboats <strong>and</strong> vessel firefighting equipment.<br />

Knowledgeable in all aspects of marlinespike seamanship. Secures<br />

a l l t y p e o f c a r g o u s i n g s h i p b o a r d m a c h i n e r y s u c h a s c a p s t a n s ,<br />

winches, hoists, <strong>and</strong> davits. Paints metal, wood, <strong>and</strong> fiberglass surfaces.<br />

Cleans compartments <strong>and</strong> decks.<br />

(2) MOSC 88K2O. Provides supervision <strong>and</strong> technical guidance<br />

for subordinates. Maintains vessel charts, publications, <strong>and</strong> orders.<br />

Keeps the vessel log book. Navigates a boat or other watercraft.<br />

Beaches <strong>and</strong> retracts l<strong>and</strong>ing craft. Tows vessels <strong>and</strong> barges in<br />

harbors <strong>and</strong> intercoastal waterways.<br />

(3) MOSC 88K3O. Instructs subordinates in watercraft <strong>and</strong> amphibian<br />

operational practices, procedures, <strong>and</strong> techniques. Supervises<br />

the embarking <strong>and</strong> disembarking of troops from the vessel.<br />

Establishes <strong>and</strong> enforces safety procedures. Schedules shipboard<br />

watches. Prepares vessel load plans. Schedules <strong>and</strong> oversees deck<br />

maintenance. Supervises maintenance of life saving <strong>and</strong> firefighting<br />

equipment.<br />

(4) MOSC 88K4O. Applies Inl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> International navigation<br />

rules while operating vessels. Conducts crew drills <strong>and</strong> supervises<br />

training on the vessel. Disseminates information on weather <strong>and</strong><br />

navigational aid changes. Maintains the vessel station bill <strong>and</strong> crew<br />

list. Operates the Mark 27 gyrocompass. Processes operations <strong>and</strong><br />

intelligence information. Receives, stores, distributes, <strong>and</strong> turns in<br />

vessel supplies, equipment, <strong>and</strong> food. Administers the vessel mess<br />

functions to include all money exchanges, headcount records, daily<br />

cook worksheets, <strong>and</strong> food utilization reports. Coordinates the operation<br />

of collective lighter control points (LCPs).<br />

b. Physical dem<strong>and</strong>s rating <strong>and</strong> qualifications for initial award of<br />

M O S . W a t e r c r a f t o p e r a t o r s m u s t p o s s e s s t h e f o l l o w i n g<br />

qualifications:<br />

(1) A physical dem<strong>and</strong>s rating of very heavy.<br />

(2) A physical profile of 222221.<br />

(3) Uncorrected vision acuity of not more than 20/200 in each<br />

eye, that corrects with spectacle lenses to 20/20 in one eye <strong>and</strong> 20/<br />

40 in other eye.<br />

(4) Normal color vision based on no more than four errors in<br />

reading the pseudoisochromatic plate test.<br />

(5) A minimum score of 100 in aptitude area MM.<br />

(6) MOSC qualifications per AR 56-9, at each level of skill.<br />

(7) MOS qualification may be attained by meeting the civilian<br />

acquired skills criteria listed in AR 601-210.<br />
