10–226. 81Z—Topographic Engineering Supervisor (Topo<br />

Engr Supv), CMF 81<br />

a. Major duties. The topographic engineering supervisor supervises<br />

topographic surveying, cartography <strong>and</strong> photolithography act<br />

i v i t i e s . A s s i s t s i n t o p o g r a p h i c p l a n n i n g a n d c o n t r o l a c t i v i t i e s .<br />

Assists in determining requirements <strong>and</strong> providing technical supervision<br />

of topographic mapping <strong>and</strong> other military geographic intellig<br />

e n c e p r o g r a m s , t o i n c l u d e g e o d e t i c a n d t o p o g r a p h i c s u r v e y i n g<br />

activities. Assists in comm<strong>and</strong> supervision <strong>and</strong> coordination of map<br />

reproduction <strong>and</strong> topographic map supply programs. Provides staff<br />

supervision <strong>and</strong> principal noncommissioned officer direction to units<br />

engaged in performing topographic engineering missions.<br />

b. Physical dem<strong>and</strong>s rating <strong>and</strong> qualifications for initial award of<br />

MOS. Topographic engineering supervisors (81Z5O) must possess<br />

the following qualifications:<br />

(1) Physical dem<strong>and</strong>s rating—N/A.<br />

(2) A physical profile of 222222.<br />

(3) Minimum score in aptitude area—N/A.<br />

c. Additional skill identifiers.<br />

(1) P5—Master Fitness Trainer.<br />

(2) 2S—Battle Staff Operations (skill level 3 <strong>and</strong> above).<br />

(3) 4A—Reclassification Training.<br />

10–227. 82C—Field Artillery Surveyor (FA Surveyor), CMF<br />

a. Major duties. The field artillery surveyor leads, supervises, or<br />

serves as a member in field artillery survey operations.<br />

( 1 ) M O S C 8 2 C 1 O . R e c o r d s f i e l d d a t a , p r e p a r e s s c h e m a t i c<br />

sketches <strong>and</strong> marks survey stations. Performs astronomic observation,<br />

measure azimuths, angles <strong>and</strong> determines deviations for target,<br />

connection, <strong>and</strong> position area surveys with angular measuring equipment.<br />

Assist PADS operator with the transfer, strap down <strong>and</strong> preparation<br />

for operations of PADS. Computes data using logarithms or<br />

calculator to obtain the unknown required field data to include<br />

computing for accuracy ratios <strong>and</strong> adjustment. Operates <strong>and</strong> perf<br />

equipment.<br />

(2) MOSC 82C2O. Supervises <strong>and</strong> coordinates PADS vehicle operations.<br />

Computes survey data, plots geographic/UTM grid coordinates<br />

<strong>and</strong> performs azimuth transfer with PADS. Operates PADS<br />

system, performs calibrations, zero velocity updates, <strong>and</strong> PMCS on<br />

PADS system. Assists collection, evaluation, <strong>and</strong> dissemination of<br />

survey information. Provides leadership <strong>and</strong> technical guidance to<br />

lower grade personnel.<br />

(3) MOSC 82C3O. Selects <strong>and</strong> determines survey starting data<br />

<strong>and</strong> reviews data for errors. Supervises the proper maintenance on<br />

all assigned section equipment, prepares technical, personnel, <strong>and</strong><br />

administrative reports covering training objectives <strong>and</strong> survey operations.<br />

Orients, instructs, <strong>and</strong> leads surveyors in survey procedures<br />

<strong>and</strong> techniques to include PADS operations. Provides leadership <strong>and</strong><br />

technical guidance to lower grade personnel.<br />

(4) MOSC 82C4O. Determines methods of survey in order to<br />

o b t a i n r e q u i r e d a c c u r a c y , p a r t i c i p a t e s , p r e p a r e s , o r g a n i z e s , a n d<br />

schedules the survey parties. Serves as the principal assistant to the<br />

survey officer <strong>and</strong> performs his duties in his absence. Provides<br />

leadership, expertise, <strong>and</strong> inspects section equipment <strong>and</strong> vehicles to<br />

ensure the proper application of PMCS. Develops training plan to<br />

accomplish training objective. Directs collection, evaluation, <strong>and</strong><br />

dissemination of field artillery survey information. Coordinates survey<br />

operations with other units <strong>and</strong> maintains survey maps/overlays.<br />

b. Physical dem<strong>and</strong>s rating <strong>and</strong> qualifications for initial award of<br />

M O S . F i e l d a r t i l l e r y s u r v e y o r s m u s t p o s s e s s t h e f o l l o w i n g<br />

qualifications:<br />

(1) A physical dem<strong>and</strong>s rating of very heavy.<br />

(2) A physical profile of 211211.<br />

(3) Normal color vision.<br />

(4) A minimum score of 95 in aptitude area ST.<br />

(5) Formal training under auspices of USAFAS is m<strong>and</strong>atory to<br />

qualify for award of the MOS.<br />

a. Major duties. The topographic surveyor supervises or conducts<br />

surveys to provide control data for map making <strong>and</strong>/or artillery<br />

support <strong>and</strong> supervises or performs topographic or geodetic computations.<br />

Duties for MOS 82D at each level of skill are:<br />

(1) MOSC 82D1O. Records topographic survey data, operates<br />

survey instruments, <strong>and</strong> performs topographic computations. Constructs<br />

<strong>and</strong> erects survey towers/st<strong>and</strong>s. Transports, sets up, operates,<br />

<strong>and</strong> maintains equipment according to written, oral or visual<br />

instructions from supervisors. Prepares abstracts of field data for<br />

final computations. Assists in the emplacement/recovery of control<br />

stations <strong>and</strong> prepares station descriptions cards. Computes abstracted<br />

survey data for final tabulation of survey project.<br />

(2) MOSC 82D2O. Transports, sets up, operates <strong>and</strong> maintains<br />

equipment according to written, oral or visual instructions from<br />

supervisors. Makes field checks to ensure field measurements meet<br />

pares, <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ardizes/calibrates survey equipment. Computes <strong>and</strong><br />

adjusts first, second <strong>and</strong> third order horizontal/vertical control surveys.<br />

Computes elevations of tidal benchmarks <strong>and</strong> baselines. Performs<br />

preliminary/field computation to verify field observations for<br />

control surveys <strong>and</strong> computes preliminary values of horizontal <strong>and</strong><br />

vertical control points. Determines <strong>and</strong> writes equations used in<br />

least square adjustments. Transforms, in the same system, coordinates<br />

<strong>and</strong> azimuths from one zone to adjacent zones. Operates <strong>and</strong><br />

writes programs for programmable electronic calculators. Directs<br />

<strong>and</strong> controls personnel when acting as a survey party chief.<br />

( 3 ) M O S C 8 2 D 3 O . S u p e r v i s e s a n d d i r e c t s s u r v e y i n s t r u m e n t<br />

repairer <strong>and</strong> topographic surveyor activities. Recommends method<br />

of computation, adjustment <strong>and</strong> need for additional data. Computes<br />

geographic positions, elevations, astronomic <strong>and</strong> laplace azimuths<br />

<strong>and</strong> latitude <strong>and</strong> longitude from astronomical observations. Evaluates<br />

<strong>and</strong> verifies results of all computations. Directs the transportation<br />

of, set up, operation <strong>and</strong> maintenance of equipment according<br />

to written, oral or visual instructions. Performs survey reconnaissance<br />

to include picture point selection, main, <strong>and</strong> secondary survey<br />

station placement <strong>and</strong> evaluates field data <strong>and</strong> the results obtained.<br />

Analyzes traverse, triangulation, leveling, satellite, <strong>and</strong> trilateration<br />

data to isolate computational or field blunders.<br />

(4) MOSC 82D4O. Supervises reconnaissance studies <strong>and</strong> reconnoiters<br />

survey sites to determine special requirements of obstacles<br />

encountered. Plans <strong>and</strong> arranges for food service, housing, sanitation,<br />

transportation, <strong>and</strong> other facilities for topographic survey activi<br />

t i e s i n r e m o t e a r e a s . P l a n s a n d o r g a n i z e s w o r k a c t i v i t i e s .<br />

Coordinates surveying <strong>and</strong> computing activities. Supervises field<br />

survey activities in support of task <strong>and</strong> mission requirements. Determines<br />

composition <strong>and</strong> operational procedures of topographic survey<br />

parties. Collects available charts, maps, control lists, aerial<br />

photographs, <strong>and</strong> other topographic data.<br />
