f. Aviation Logistics (15D).
(1) Description of duties. Commands or serves in leadership positions
in aviation maintenance/logistics units. Plans, coordinates, and
directs employment of aviation maintenance/logistics assets. Serves
in staff positions, at various levels, requiring aviation maintenance/
logistics knowledge and experience.
(2) Special qualifications. Must have completed the Aviation Officer
Advanced Course or the Combined Logistics Officers Advanced
Course and the Maintenance Management/Maintenance Test
Pilot Course. Officers who previously completed other advanced
courses and were awarded AOC 15D will remain qualified. Deviations
and exceptions must be approved by the Assistant Commandant,
U.S. Army Aviation Logistics School, Fort Eustis, Virginia.
(3) Special grading of positions. For positions graded CPT and
above.
( a ) C o m p a n y C o m m a n d e r p o s i t i o n s i n a v i a t i o n i n t e r m e d i a t e
maintenance companies (AVIM) will be graded MAJ.
(b) Company Commander positions in SOA maintenance companies
(AVUM/AVIM) will be graded MAJ.

3–6. Special Forces (18) (Proponent: JFK Special Warfare
Center and School) (Closed to women—see AR 611-1,
paragraph 4-7.)
a. Branch description. The Special Forces Branch ensures competent
and confident leaders to exploit the Army’s Airland Battle
doctrine across the entire spectrum of conflict at all levels of warfare
in joint and combined campaigns as part of the Army’s balanced
forces. Special Forces includes positions concerned with the
employment of highly specialized Army units and elements to accomplish
specific missions throughout the levels of warfare (Strategic,
Operational and Tactical). Special Forces units are designed to
operate with Airland Battle in the Deep, Close, or Rear areas of the
b a t t l e f i e l d t o c o n d u c t u n i l a t e r a l o p e r a t i o n s o r s u p p o r t t h e c o m -
mander in his operational planning. Level of employment for Special
Forces goes from Low to High Intensity conflict, focusing
efforts to accomplish uniquely specific missions as the situation
dictates in both developed and underdeveloped theatres of operation.
Special Forces units are comprised of highly trained volunteers,
each with extensive training in his specialty. Many Special Forces
missions are highly sensit Special Forces (18A).
(1) Description of duties. Commands or serves on the staff of
Special Forces units. Serves in positions requiring general Special
Forces experience or training. Serves as a Commander, Staff Officer,
Advisor, Exchange Officer, Plans and Operations Officer, and
service school instructor in positions requiring Special Forces experience
or training. Conducts area studies of potential operational
areas, acquiring detailed knowledge of their geography, economy,
political structure, armed forces, and history. Develops and maintains
foreign language capability. Plans, controls and executes foreign
internal defense, strike operations, strategic reconnaissance,
u n c o n v e n t i o n a l w a r f a r e , a n d o t h e r r e l a t e d s p e c i a l o p e r a t i o n s .
Develops interpersonal and communicative skills to facilitate interaction
with foreign officers, soldiers, and civilians.
(2) Special qualifications.
(a) Be a CPT or 1LT promotable who has completed an officer
basic and advance course.
(b) Have a Defense language Aptitude Battery (DLAB) score of
85 or above or a demonstrated language proficiency of 1/1 or above.
(c) Meet physical standards in AR 40-501.
(d) Be eligible for TOP SECRET clearance under AR 380-67.
(e) Be airborne qualified.
(f) Have no record of punishment under Article 15, UCMJ.
(3) Special grading of positions. For positions coded CPT and
above.

(4) Position coding. None.
(5) Unique duty positions. Special Forces instructor in all service
schools.
3–7. Corps of Engineers (21) (Proponent: Engineer
School)
a. Branch description. The Corps of Engineers is a Combat Arms
Branch which also has combat support and combat service support
roles. Missions encompass military and civil engineering and the
related planning, organization, training, operation, and development.
Engineer officers are responsible for training and leading troops in
combat, topographic, and construction engineering operations; facilities
maintenance; civil works programs; and leading Engineer troops
in infantry combat operations.
b. Branch qualifications. DA Pam 600-3 lists qualifications for
entry and professional development in this branch.
c. Engineer General (21A).
(1) Description of duties. Provides general engineer expertise to
Army activities. The majority of these positions will be at DA,
DoD, Joint Staff, MACOMs, or Field Activities.
(2) Special qualifications. Engineer officers are eligible for ass
i g n m e n t i n a 2 1 A p o s i t i o n u p o n b r a n c h q u a l i f i c a t i o n , w h i c h
requires:
(a) Experience in an Engineer TOE unit.
(b) Completion of the Advance Course.
(c) Successful company command.
(3) Special grading of positions. None.
(4) Unique duty positions. None.
d. Combat Engineer (21B).
(1) Description of duties. Plans, directs, and conducts engineer
support of combat and peacetime operations. Support includes enhancement
of friendly mobility, impeding enemy mobility (countermobility),
providing survivability support, performing sustainment
e n g i n e e r i n g m i s s i o n s ( p a r t i c u l a r l y c o n s t r u c t i o n ) , c o n d u c t i n g
topographic operations, and when necessary, fighting as infantry.
C o m b a t e n g i n e e r s c o m m a n d c o m b a t e n g i n e e r , c o n s t r u c t i o n , a n d
topographic units. They direct planning and implementation of engineering
and topographic support at all levels of operations.
( 2 ) S p e c i a l q u a l i f i c a t i o n s . S o m e f i e l d g r a d e p o s i t i o n s i n
topographic assignments may require prior topographic experience
and/or an advanced civilian degree in a geoscience discipline.
(3) Special grading of positions. None.

(FCCME) (21D).
(1) Description of duties. Plans and programs construction and
maintenance of facilities for Army and Air Force installations world
wide. Provides Facilities Engineering and Family Housing support
for the Army in garrison and in the theater of operations. Supports
the nation through execution of the Civil Works Program, military
construction, and nation building projects. Enhances national preparedness
plans. Conducts research and development at engineer laboratories
and in engineer functional areas.
(2) Special qualifications. Requires completion of a bachelor’s or
g r a d u a t e - l e v e l d e g r e e i n a n e n g i n e e r i n g f i e l d , o r e n g i n e e r i n g
management.
(3) Special grading of positions. Director of Engineering and
Housing (DEH) positions are graded based primarily on three factors:
total population served, total operating budget, and total construction
planned. DEH may be in the grade of MAJ, LTC, or COL.
Positions over the grade of MAJ require concurrence from the
Office of the Chief of Engineers, ATTN: DAEN-ZC.
