f. Aviation Logistics (15D).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Comm<strong>and</strong>s or serves in leadership positions<br />

in aviation maintenance/logistics units. Plans, coordinates, <strong>and</strong><br />

directs employment of aviation maintenance/logistics assets. Serves<br />

in staff positions, at various levels, requiring aviation maintenance/<br />

logistics knowledge <strong>and</strong> experience.<br />

(2) Special qualifications. Must have completed the Aviation Officer<br />

Advanced Course or the Combined Logistics Officers Advanced<br />

Course <strong>and</strong> the Maintenance Management/Maintenance Test<br />

Pilot Course. Officers who previously completed other advanced<br />

courses <strong>and</strong> were awarded AOC 15D will remain qualified. Deviations<br />

<strong>and</strong> exceptions must be approved by the Assistant Comm<strong>and</strong>ant,<br />

U.S. <strong>Army</strong> Aviation Logistics School, Fort Eustis, Virginia.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. For positions graded CPT <strong>and</strong><br />

above.<br />

( a ) C o m p a n y C o m m a n d e r p o s i t i o n s i n a v i a t i o n i n t e r m e d i a t e<br />

maintenance companies (AVIM) will be graded MAJ.<br />

(b) Company Comm<strong>and</strong>er positions in SOA maintenance companies<br />

(AVUM/AVIM) will be graded MAJ.<br />

(4) Unique duty positions.<br />

(a) Avionics maintenance officer.<br />

(b) C-E Materiel Officer in MMC or support comm<strong>and</strong>.<br />

3–6. Special Forces (18) (Proponent: JFK Special Warfare<br />

Center <strong>and</strong> School) (Closed to women—see AR 611-1,<br />

paragraph 4-7.)<br />

a. Branch description. The Special Forces Branch ensures competent<br />

<strong>and</strong> confident leaders to exploit the <strong>Army</strong>’s Airl<strong>and</strong> Battle<br />

doctrine across the entire spectrum of conflict at all levels of warfare<br />

in joint <strong>and</strong> combined campaigns as part of the <strong>Army</strong>’s balanced<br />

forces. Special Forces includes positions concerned with the<br />

employment of highly specialized <strong>Army</strong> units <strong>and</strong> elements to accomplish<br />

specific missions throughout the levels of warfare (Strategic,<br />

Operational <strong>and</strong> Tactical). Special Forces units are designed to<br />

operate with Airl<strong>and</strong> Battle in the Deep, Close, or Rear areas of the<br />

b a t t l e f i e l d t o c o n d u c t u n i l a t e r a l o p e r a t i o n s o r s u p p o r t t h e c o m -<br />

m<strong>and</strong>er in his operational planning. Level of employment for Special<br />

Forces goes from Low to High Intensity conflict, focusing<br />

efforts to accomplish uniquely specific missions as the situation<br />

dictates in both developed <strong>and</strong> underdeveloped theatres of operation.<br />

Special Forces units are comprised of highly trained volunteers,<br />

each with extensive training in his specialty. Many Special Forces<br />

missions are highly sensit Special Forces (18A).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Comm<strong>and</strong>s or serves on the staff of<br />

Special Forces units. Serves in positions requiring general Special<br />

Forces experience or training. Serves as a Comm<strong>and</strong>er, Staff Officer,<br />

Advisor, Exchange Officer, Plans <strong>and</strong> Operations Officer, <strong>and</strong><br />

service school instructor in positions requiring Special Forces experience<br />

or training. Conducts area studies of potential operational<br />

areas, acquiring detailed knowledge of their geography, economy,<br />

political structure, armed forces, <strong>and</strong> history. Develops <strong>and</strong> maintains<br />

foreign language capability. Plans, controls <strong>and</strong> executes foreign<br />

internal defense, strike operations, strategic reconnaissance,<br />

u n c o n v e n t i o n a l w a r f a r e , a n d o t h e r r e l a t e d s p e c i a l o p e r a t i o n s .<br />

Develops interpersonal <strong>and</strong> communicative skills to facilitate interaction<br />

with foreign officers, soldiers, <strong>and</strong> civilians.<br />

(2) Special qualifications.<br />

(a) Be a CPT or 1LT promotable who has completed an officer<br />

basic <strong>and</strong> advance course.<br />

(b) Have a Defense language Aptitude Battery (DLAB) score of<br />

85 or above or a demonstrated language proficiency of 1/1 or above.<br />

(c) Meet physical st<strong>and</strong>ards in AR 40-501.<br />

(d) Be eligible for TOP SECRET clearance under AR 380-67.<br />

(e) Be airborne qualified.<br />

(f) Have no record of punishment under Article 15, UCMJ.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. For positions coded CPT <strong>and</strong><br />

above.<br />

(4) Position coding. None.<br />

(5) Unique duty positions. Special Forces instructor in all service<br />

schools.<br />

3–7. Corps of Engineers (21) (Proponent: Engineer<br />

School)<br />

a. Branch description. The Corps of Engineers is a Combat Arms<br />

Branch which also has combat support <strong>and</strong> combat service support<br />

roles. Missions encompass military <strong>and</strong> civil engineering <strong>and</strong> the<br />

related planning, organization, training, operation, <strong>and</strong> development.<br />

Engineer officers are responsible for training <strong>and</strong> leading troops in<br />

combat, topographic, <strong>and</strong> construction engineering operations; facilities<br />

maintenance; civil works programs; <strong>and</strong> leading Engineer troops<br />

in infantry combat operations.<br />

b. Branch qualifications. DA Pam 600-3 lists qualifications for<br />

entry <strong>and</strong> professional development in this branch.<br />

c. Engineer General (21A).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Provides general engineer expertise to<br />

<strong>Army</strong> activities. The majority of these positions will be at DA,<br />

DoD, Joint Staff, MACOMs, or Field Activities.<br />

(2) Special qualifications. Engineer officers are eligible for ass<br />

i g n m e n t i n a 2 1 A p o s i t i o n u p o n b r a n c h q u a l i f i c a t i o n , w h i c h<br />

requires:<br />

(a) Experience in an Engineer TOE unit.<br />

(b) Completion of the Advance Course.<br />

(c) Successful company comm<strong>and</strong>.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. None.<br />

(4) Unique duty positions. None.<br />

d. Combat Engineer (21B).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Plans, directs, <strong>and</strong> conducts engineer<br />

support of combat <strong>and</strong> peacetime operations. Support includes enhancement<br />

of friendly mobility, impeding enemy mobility (countermobility),<br />

providing survivability support, performing sustainment<br />

e n g i n e e r i n g m i s s i o n s ( p a r t i c u l a r l y c o n s t r u c t i o n ) , c o n d u c t i n g<br />

topographic operations, <strong>and</strong> when necessary, fighting as infantry.<br />

C o m b a t e n g i n e e r s c o m m a n d c o m b a t e n g i n e e r , c o n s t r u c t i o n , a n d<br />

topographic units. They direct planning <strong>and</strong> implementation of engineering<br />

<strong>and</strong> topographic support at all levels of operations.<br />

( 2 ) S p e c i a l q u a l i f i c a t i o n s . S o m e f i e l d g r a d e p o s i t i o n s i n<br />

topographic assignments may require prior topographic experience<br />

<strong>and</strong>/or an advanced civilian degree in a geoscience discipline.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. None.<br />

(4) Unique duty positions.<br />

(a) Utilities Detachment Comm<strong>and</strong>er.<br />

(b) Port Construction Unit Comm<strong>and</strong>er.<br />

(c) Diving Detachment Comm<strong>and</strong>er.<br />

( d ) U n i f i e d a n d S p e c i a l C o m m a n d M a p p i n g , C h a r t i n g , a n d<br />

Geodesy Staff Officer.<br />

(e) Staff Office, Defense Mapping Agency.<br />

e . F a c i l i t i e s / C o n t r a c t C o n s t r u c t i o n M a n a g e m e n t E n g i n e e r<br />

(FCCME) (21D).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Plans <strong>and</strong> programs construction <strong>and</strong><br />

maintenance of facilities for <strong>Army</strong> <strong>and</strong> Air Force installations world<br />

wide. Provides Facilities Engineering <strong>and</strong> Family Housing support<br />

for the <strong>Army</strong> in garrison <strong>and</strong> in the theater of operations. Supports<br />

the nation through execution of the Civil Works Program, military<br />

construction, <strong>and</strong> nation building projects. Enhances national preparedness<br />

plans. Conducts research <strong>and</strong> development at engineer laboratories<br />

<strong>and</strong> in engineer functional areas.<br />

(2) Special qualifications. Requires completion of a bachelor’s or<br />

g r a d u a t e - l e v e l d e g r e e i n a n e n g i n e e r i n g f i e l d , o r e n g i n e e r i n g<br />

management.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. Director of Engineering <strong>and</strong><br />

Housing (DEH) positions are graded based primarily on three factors:<br />

total population served, total operating budget, <strong>and</strong> total construction<br />

planned. DEH may be in the grade of MAJ, LTC, or COL.<br />

Positions over the grade of MAJ require concurrence from the<br />

Office of the Chief of Engineers, ATTN: DAEN-ZC.<br />

(4) Unique duty positions.<br />

(a) Director of Engineering <strong>and</strong> Housing (COL, LTC, MAJ).<br />

(b) Engineer District Comm<strong>and</strong>er (COL, LTC).
