3–4. Air Defense Artillery (14) (Proponent: Air Defense<br />

Artillery School)<br />

a. Branch description. Responsible for the tactical employment,<br />

comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> control, <strong>and</strong> the airspace management of both gun<br />

<strong>and</strong> missile units of Air Defense Artillery. Directs the technical <strong>and</strong><br />

tactical operations, as well as the engagement techniques used by<br />

the various systems. Coordinates <strong>and</strong> provides the expertise at all<br />

levels of comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> develops the doctrine <strong>and</strong> plans essential to<br />

the successful use of Air Defense Artillery weapons in support of<br />

airl<strong>and</strong> combat operations <strong>and</strong> defense against enemy aircraft <strong>and</strong><br />

missile attacks. Develops organizational <strong>and</strong> operational concepts<br />

for future Air Defense systems. Directs training, administration,<br />

communications, supply, maintenance, transportation <strong>and</strong> security<br />

activities of ADA units.<br />

b. Branch qualifications. DA Pam 600-3 lists qualifications for<br />

entry <strong>and</strong> professional development in this branch.<br />

c. Air Defense Artillery, General (14A).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Senior ADA Comm<strong>and</strong>er, liaison officer<br />

or staff officer in positions which require general Air Defense<br />

knowledge/experience, but are not related to a specific Air Defense<br />

weapons system.<br />

(2) Special qualifications. Qualified in one or more of the other<br />

areas of concentration within Air Defense.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions.<br />

(a) AD Coordination/Management Officer graded MAJ in comm<strong>and</strong><br />

section of Aviation Brigade, Group <strong>and</strong> Regiment.<br />

(b) Asst ADA/Airspace Officer graded CPT in ADA Element of<br />

Aviation Brigade, Group <strong>and</strong> Regiment.<br />

(4) Unique duty positions. None.<br />

d. Short-Range Air Defense Artillery (SHORAD) (14B). (closed<br />

to women—see AR 611-1, paragraph 4-7)<br />

(1) Description of duties. Comm<strong>and</strong>s or assists the comm<strong>and</strong>er of<br />

short-range Air Defense Artillery units. Plans, coordinates <strong>and</strong> directs<br />

employment of gun systems <strong>and</strong>/or surface to air missile systems<br />

<strong>and</strong> their associated comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> control system. Systems<br />

i n c l u d e D u s t e r A R N G , V U L C A N , C H A P A R R A L , R O L A N D<br />

ARNG, REDEYE <strong>and</strong> STINGER, which are employed to protect<br />

maneuver units <strong>and</strong> key installations from attack by low flying<br />

hostile aircraft. Serves as the Air Defense Staff Officer at battalion,<br />

brigade, division <strong>and</strong> higher headquarters.<br />

( 2 ) S p e c i a l q u a l i f i c a t i o n s . R e q u i r e s c o m p l e t i o n o f a p p r o p r i a t e<br />

resident training at the U.S. <strong>Army</strong> Air Defense Artillery School<br />

(USAADASCH).<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. None.<br />

(4) Unique duty positions. None.<br />

e. HAWK Missile Air Defense Artillery (14D).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Comm<strong>and</strong>s or assists the comm<strong>and</strong>er of<br />

a HAWK Air Defense Artillery missile unit. Plans, coordinates, <strong>and</strong><br />

directs employment of HAWK units <strong>and</strong> their associated comm<strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> control system to counter the threat of high performance aircraft,<br />

cruise missiles <strong>and</strong> helicopters at low <strong>and</strong> medium altitudes.<br />

Serves as an Air Defense Artillery Staff Officer at Corps <strong>and</strong> Echelons<br />

Above Corps.<br />

( 2 ) S p e c i a l q u a l i f i c a t i o n s . R e q u i r e s c o m p l e t i o n o f a p p r o p r i a t e<br />

resident training at the U.S. <strong>Army</strong> Air Defense Artillery School<br />

(USAADASCH). Certain advisory positions require appropriate language<br />

qualification/training.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. None.<br />

(4) Unique duty positions. None.<br />

f. PATRIOT Missile Air Defense Artillery (14E).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Comm<strong>and</strong>s or assists the comm<strong>and</strong>er of<br />

a PATRIOT Air Defense Artillery missile unit. Plans, coordinates<br />

<strong>and</strong> directs employment of PATRIOT units <strong>and</strong> their associated<br />

comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> control system to counter the threat of all altitude<br />

hostile high-performance all weather aircraft attempting penetration<br />

of the defended area. Serves as an Air Defense Artillery Staff<br />

Officer at Echelons Above Corps (EAC).<br />

(2) Special qualifications. Requires completion of resident training<br />

at the U.S. <strong>Army</strong> Air Defense Artillery School (USAADASCH).<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. None.<br />

(4) Unique duty positions. None.<br />

3–5. Aviation Branch (15) (Proponent: Aviation Center)<br />

a. Branch description. Encompasses operational flying <strong>and</strong> nonoperational<br />

aviation positions (less those identified with AMEDD<br />

AOC 67J) concerned with the employment <strong>and</strong> support of <strong>Army</strong><br />

aviation units <strong>and</strong> elements. Directs <strong>and</strong> coordinates the employment<br />

o f A r m y a v i a t i o n u n i t s i n s u p p o r t o f l a n d c o m b a t o p e r a t i o n s .<br />

Provides the <strong>Army</strong> expertise at all levels of comm<strong>and</strong> to develop<br />

doctrine <strong>and</strong> plans essential to the successful employment of <strong>Army</strong><br />

aviation systems. Directs training, safety, administration, communications,<br />

supply maintenance, transportation, <strong>and</strong> security activities<br />

of aviation units.<br />

b. Branch qualifications. DA Pam 600-3 lists qualifications for<br />

entry <strong>and</strong> professional development in this branch.<br />

c. Aviation, General (15A).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Identifies positions requiring general<br />

aviation knowledge <strong>and</strong> experience but not related to a specific<br />

aviation AOC.<br />

(2) Special qualifications. Must have completed an officer basic<br />

course <strong>and</strong> initial entry rotary wing training. Appropriate aviation<br />

training requirements will be identified by a SI.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. Only aviation LT positions will<br />

be coded 15A.<br />

(4) Unique duty positions. None.<br />

d. Aviation Combined Arms Operations (15B).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Comm<strong>and</strong>s or serves in leadership positions<br />

in aviation units. Plans, coordinates, <strong>and</strong> directs employment<br />

of aviation assets as an integral member of the combined arms team.<br />

Serves in staff positions, at various levels, which require knowledge<br />

of, <strong>and</strong> training in, the doctrinal <strong>and</strong> organizational facets of aviation<br />

<strong>and</strong> the other combat arms.<br />

(2) Special qualifications. Must have completed a combat arms<br />

officer advanced course. Appropriate aviation training requirements<br />

will be identified by a SI.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. For positions graded CPT <strong>and</strong><br />

above.<br />

(a) Company Comm<strong>and</strong>er positions in medium helicopter companies<br />

(CH-47) will be graded MAJ.<br />

(b) Company <strong>and</strong> Detachment Comm<strong>and</strong>er positions in Special<br />

Operations Aviation (SOA) other than HHC will be graded MAJ.<br />

(c) Platoon Leader positions in the SOA Assault Helicopter Battalion,<br />

Medium Helicopter Battalion, Aviation Battalion <strong>and</strong> Aviation<br />

Detachment, will be graded CPT.<br />

( d ) E x e c u t i v e o f f i c e r p o s i t i o n s i n t h e S O A r e g i m e n t w i l l b e<br />

graded LTC.<br />

(e) Executive officer <strong>and</strong> S3 positions in the SOA assault helicopter<br />

battalion will be graded LTC.<br />

(4) Unique duty positions. None.<br />

e. Aviation All-Source Intelligence (15C).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Comm<strong>and</strong>s or serves in leadership positions<br />

in special electronic/tactical intelligence aviation units. Plans,<br />

coordinates, <strong>and</strong> directs employment of special electronic/tactical<br />

intelligence aviation assets. Serves in staff positions, at various<br />

l e v e l s r e q u i r i n g s p e c i a l e l e c t r o n i c s / t a c t i c a l i n t e l l i g e n c e a v i a t i o n<br />

knowledge <strong>and</strong> experience.<br />

(2) Special qualifications. Must have completed the <strong>Military</strong> Intelligence<br />

Officer Advanced Course with MI FA training in AOC<br />

35D (All Course Intelligence) or 35G (Signals Intelligence/Electronic<br />

Warfare). Appropriate aviation training requirements will be<br />

identified by a SI. Individual must obtain a TOP SECRET clearance<br />

with Special Intelligence access.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. For positions graded CPT <strong>and</strong><br />

above. Company Comm<strong>and</strong>er positions in aviation companies (EW)<br />
