3–4. Air Defense Artillery (14) (Proponent: Air Defense
Artillery School)
a. Branch description. Responsible for the tactical employment,
command and control, and the airspace management of both gun
and missile units of Air Defense Artillery. Directs the technical and
tactical operations, as well as the engagement techniques used by
the various systems. Coordinates and provides the expertise at all
levels of command and develops the doctrine and plans essential to
the successful use of Air Defense Artillery weapons in support of
airland combat operations and defense against enemy aircraft and
missile attacks. Develops organizational and operational concepts
for future Air Defense systems. Directs training, administration,
communications, supply, maintenance, transportation and security
activities of ADA units.
b. Branch qualifications. DA Pam 600-3 lists qualifications for
entry and professional development in this branch.
c. Air Defense Artillery, General (14A).
(1) Description of duties. Senior ADA Commander, liaison officer
or staff officer in positions which require general Air Defense
knowledge/experience, but are not related to a specific Air Defense
weapons system.
(2) Special qualifications. Qualified in one or more of the other
areas of concentration within Air Defense.
(3) Special grading of positions.
(a) AD Coordination/Management Officer graded MAJ in command
section of Aviation Brigade, Group and Regiment.
(b) Asst ADA/Airspace Officer graded CPT in ADA Element of
Aviation Brigade, Group and Regiment.
(4) Unique duty positions. None.
d. Short-Range Air Defense Artillery (SHORAD) (14B). (closed
to women—see AR 611-1, paragraph 4-7)
(1) Description of duties. Commands or assists the commander of
short-range Air Defense Artillery units. Plans, coordinates and directs
employment of gun systems and/or surface to air missile systems
and their associated command and control system. Systems

ARNG, REDEYE and STINGER, which are employed to protect
maneuver units and key installations from attack by low flying
hostile aircraft. Serves as the Air Defense Staff Officer at battalion,
brigade, division and higher headquarters.

(USAADASCH).
(3) Special grading of positions. None.

e. HAWK Missile Air Defense Artillery (14D).
(1) Description of duties. Commands or assists the commander of
a HAWK Air Defense Artillery missile unit. Plans, coordinates, and
directs employment of HAWK units and their associated command
and control system to counter the threat of high performance aircraft,
cruise missiles and helicopters at low and medium altitudes.
Serves as an Air Defense Artillery Staff Officer at Corps and Echelons
Above Corps.

resident training at the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery School
(USAADASCH). Certain advisory positions require appropriate language
qualification/training.

f. PATRIOT Missile Air Defense Artillery (14E).
(1) Description of duties. Commands or assists the commander of
a PATRIOT Air Defense Artillery missile unit. Plans, coordinates
and directs employment of PATRIOT units and their associated
command and control system to counter the threat of all altitude
hostile high-performance all weather aircraft attempting penetration
of the defended area. Serves as an Air Defense Artillery Staff
Officer at Echelons Above Corps (EAC).

(2) Special qualifications. Requires completion of resident training
at the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery School (USAADASCH).
(3) Special grading of positions. None.
(4) Unique duty positions. None.
3–5. Aviation Branch (15) (Proponent: Aviation Center)
a. Branch description. Encompasses operational flying and nonoperational
aviation positions (less those identified with AMEDD
AOC 67J) concerned with the employment and support of Army
aviation units and elements. Directs and coordinates the employment
o f A r m y a v i a t i o n u n i t s i n s u p p o r t o f l a n d c o m b a t o p e r a t i o n s .
Provides the Army expertise at all levels of command to develop
doctrine and plans essential to the successful employment of Army
aviation systems. Directs training, safety, administration, communications,
supply maintenance, transportation, and security activities
of aviation units.
b. Branch qualifications. DA Pam 600-3 lists qualifications for
entry and professional development in this branch.
c. Aviation, General (15A).
(1) Description of duties. Identifies positions requiring general
aviation knowledge and experience but not related to a specific
aviation AOC.
(2) Special qualifications. Must have completed an officer basic
course and initial entry rotary wing training. Appropriate aviation
training requirements will be identified by a SI.
(3) Special grading of positions. Only aviation LT positions will
be coded 15A.
(4) Unique duty positions. None.
d. Aviation Combined Arms Operations (15B).
(1) Description of duties. Commands or serves in leadership positions
in aviation units. Plans, coordinates, and directs employment
of aviation assets as an integral member of the combined arms team.
Serves in staff positions, at various levels, which require knowledge
of, and training in, the doctrinal and organizational facets of aviation
and the other combat arms.
(2) Special qualifications. Must have completed a combat arms
officer advanced course. Appropriate aviation training requirements
will be identified by a SI.
(3) Special grading of positions. For positions graded CPT and
above.
(a) Company Commander positions in medium helicopter companies
(CH-47) will be graded MAJ.
(b) Company and Detachment Commander positions in Special
Operations Aviation (SOA) other than HHC will be graded MAJ.
(c) Platoon Leader positions in the SOA Assault Helicopter Battalion,
Medium Helicopter Battalion, Aviation Battalion and Aviation
Detachment, will be graded CPT.
( d ) E x e c u t i v e o f f i c e r p o s i t i o n s i n t h e S O A r e g i m e n t w i l l b e
graded LTC.
(e) Executive officer and S3 positions in the SOA assault helicopter
battalion will be graded LTC.
(4) Unique duty positions. None.
e. Aviation All-Source Intelligence (15C).
(1) Description of duties. Commands or serves in leadership positions
in special electronic/tactical intelligence aviation units. Plans,
coordinates, and directs employment of special electronic/tactical
intelligence aviation assets. Serves in staff positions, at various

knowledge and experience.
(2) Special qualifications. Must have completed the Military Intelligence
Officer Advanced Course with MI FA training in AOC
35D (All Course Intelligence) or 35G (Signals Intelligence/Electronic
Warfare). Appropriate aviation training requirements will be
identified by a SI. Individual must obtain a TOP SECRET clearance
with Special Intelligence access.
(3) Special grading of positions. For positions graded CPT and
above. Company Commander positions in aviation companies (EW)
