Chapter 3<br />

Specifications for Branches/FA<br />

Section I<br />

Branches<br />

3–1. Infantry (11) (Proponent: Infantry School) (Closed to<br />

women—see AR 611-1, paragraph 4-7.)<br />

a. Branch description. Encompasses positions concerned with the<br />

training <strong>and</strong> tactical employment of Infantry units, Infantry soldiers,<br />

<strong>and</strong> combined arms units. Evaluates intelligence, estimates situations,<br />

<strong>and</strong> formulates decisions. Coordinates employment of unit<br />

with other units. Comm<strong>and</strong>s attached elements. Directs communications,<br />

location <strong>and</strong> construction of Infantry positions <strong>and</strong> ground<br />

obstacles, <strong>and</strong> camouflaging of positions <strong>and</strong> equipment. Directs<br />

operation <strong>and</strong> employment of Infantry weapons <strong>and</strong> equipment such<br />

as rifles, machine guns, mortars, h<strong>and</strong> grenades, rocket launchers,<br />

recoilless rifles, armored personnel carriers <strong>and</strong> Bradley Infantry<br />

Fighting Vehicle. Directs training, administration, supply, maintenance,<br />

transportation <strong>and</strong> security activities of Infantry units.<br />

b. Branch qualifications. DA Pam 600-3 lists qualification criteria<br />

for entry <strong>and</strong> professional development in this branch.<br />

c. Infantry (11A).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Comm<strong>and</strong>s or assists the comm<strong>and</strong>er in<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>ing an Infantry unit. Serves in positions requiring general<br />

infantry experience.<br />

(2) Special qualifications. Must have completed the Infantry Officer<br />

Basic Course <strong>and</strong>/or possess the basic knowledge necessary for<br />

successful operations in an infantry unit gained through additional<br />

training or experience.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions.<br />

(a) The Recon Platoon Leader in a Ranger Regiment will be<br />

graded CPT.<br />

(b) The Chief, Leadership Training Program (LTP), at the Joint<br />

Readiness Training Center (JRTC), Ft Polk, LA will be graded<br />

LTC.<br />

(c) The company comm<strong>and</strong>er in the Alaskan National Guard<br />

Scout Battalion will be graded MAJ.<br />

(4) Unique duty positions. None.<br />

3–2. Armor (12) (Proponent: Armor School) (Closed to<br />

women—see AR 611-1, paragraph 4-5.)<br />

a. Branch description. Encompasses leadership <strong>and</strong> staff positions<br />

concerned with the training <strong>and</strong> tactical employment of tank or<br />

armored reconnaissance units. Evaluates intelligence, estimates situations,<br />

formulates courses of action <strong>and</strong> makes decisions, coordin<br />

a t e s e m p l o y m e n t o f u n i t w i t h o t h e r u n i t s ( t o i n c l u d e c o m b a t<br />

aviation). Comm<strong>and</strong>s attached elements. Directs communications,<br />

location <strong>and</strong> construction of positions, <strong>and</strong> camouflaging of positions<br />

<strong>and</strong> equipment. Directs operations <strong>and</strong> employment of tanks,<br />

armored vehicles, support infantry, <strong>and</strong> related equipment. Directs<br />

training, administration, supply maintenance, transportation, <strong>and</strong> security<br />

activities of the unit.<br />

b. Branch qualifications. DA Pam 600-3 lists qualifications for<br />

entry <strong>and</strong> professional development in this branch.<br />

c. Armor, General (12A).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Performs in leadership or staff positions<br />

which require skills involving general armor field knowledge.<br />

(2) Special qualifications. Must have appropriate training in both<br />

tank <strong>and</strong> reconnaissance weapon systems (employed as combined<br />

arms unit) at the Armor School, or equivalent training or experience.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. The Recon Platoon Leader in a<br />

Ranger Regiment will be graded CPT.<br />

(4) Unique duty positions. None.<br />

d. Armor (12B).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Performs in leadership or staff positions<br />

of tank units or tank specific positions at higher headquarters.<br />

(2) Special qualifications. Requires completion of the 12B (tank<br />

tactics) track of the Armor Officer Basic Course or equivalent training<br />

or experience.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. None.<br />

(4) Unique duty positions. None.<br />

e. Cavalry (12C).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Performs in leadership or staff positions<br />

o f A r m o r R e c o n n a i s s a n c e u n i t s o r c a v a l r y s p e c i f i c p o s i t i o n s a t<br />

higher headquarters.<br />

(2) Special qualifications. Requires completion of Scout Leader<br />

Course, Calvary Leaders Course, or a minimum of 12 months actual<br />

experience as a cavalry officer (AOC 12C).<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. Divisional Cavalry Squadron<br />

HHT Comm<strong>and</strong>er (MAJ).<br />

(4) Unique duty positions. None.<br />

3–3. Field Artillery (13) (Proponent: Field Artillery School)<br />

a . B r a n c h d e s c r i p t i o n . E n c o m p a s s e s p o s i t i o n s w h i c h p r o v i d e s<br />

fire support to maneuver elements through the tactical <strong>and</strong> operational<br />

employment of field artillery systems. Comm<strong>and</strong>s, directs,<br />

<strong>and</strong> controls field artillery units at all levels. Directs technical fire<br />

control <strong>and</strong> firing operations using both manual <strong>and</strong> computer techniques.<br />

Coordinates the collective employment of joint <strong>and</strong> combined<br />

fire support assets to include non-lethal systems in support of<br />

the combined arms comm<strong>and</strong>er. Participates in the planning <strong>and</strong><br />

development of doctrine, organization, training, material, leadership,<br />

<strong>and</strong> soldier initiatives to support the field artillery’s role in combined<br />

arms operations.<br />

b. Branch qualification. DA Pam 600-3 lists qualifications for<br />

entry <strong>and</strong> professional development in this branch.<br />

c. Field Artillery, General (13A).<br />

(1) Description of duties. Comm<strong>and</strong>s or assists the comm<strong>and</strong>er of<br />

field artillery units. Plan, coordinates, <strong>and</strong> directs field artillery activities<br />

within the comm<strong>and</strong>. Serves in positions requiring knowledge<br />

of field artillery systems, experience at various staff levels.<br />

(2) Special qualifications. Must have completed the Field Artillery<br />

Officer Basic Course. Must use the basic knowledge gained in<br />

that course to conduct successful field artillery operations <strong>and</strong> as a<br />

building block for future training <strong>and</strong> experience.<br />

(3) Special grading of positions. None.
