Chapter 3
Specifications for Branches/FA
Section I
Branches
3–1. Infantry (11) (Proponent: Infantry School) (Closed to
women—see AR 611-1, paragraph 4-7.)
a. Branch description. Encompasses positions concerned with the
training and tactical employment of Infantry units, Infantry soldiers,
and combined arms units. Evaluates intelligence, estimates situations,
and formulates decisions. Coordinates employment of unit
with other units. Commands attached elements. Directs communications,
location and construction of Infantry positions and ground
obstacles, and camouflaging of positions and equipment. Directs
operation and employment of Infantry weapons and equipment such
as rifles, machine guns, mortars, hand grenades, rocket launchers,
recoilless rifles, armored personnel carriers and Bradley Infantry
Fighting Vehicle. Directs training, administration, supply, maintenance,
transportation and security activities of Infantry units.
b. Branch qualifications. DA Pam 600-3 lists qualification criteria
for entry and professional development in this branch.
c. Infantry (11A).
(1) Description of duties. Commands or assists the commander in
commanding an Infantry unit. Serves in positions requiring general
infantry experience.
(2) Special qualifications. Must have completed the Infantry Officer
Basic Course and/or possess the basic knowledge necessary for
successful operations in an infantry unit gained through additional
training or experience.
(3) Special grading of positions.
(a) The Recon Platoon Leader in a Ranger Regiment will be
graded CPT.
(b) The Chief, Leadership Training Program (LTP), at the Joint
Readiness Training Center (JRTC), Ft Polk, LA will be graded
LTC.
(c) The company commander in the Alaskan National Guard
Scout Battalion will be graded MAJ.
(4) Unique duty positions. None.
3–2. Armor (12) (Proponent: Armor School) (Closed to
women—see AR 611-1, paragraph 4-5.)
a. Branch description. Encompasses leadership and staff positions
concerned with the training and tactical employment of tank or
armored reconnaissance units. Evaluates intelligence, estimates situations,
formulates courses of action and makes decisions, coordin

aviation). Commands attached elements. Directs communications,
location and construction of positions, and camouflaging of positions
and equipment. Directs operations and employment of tanks,
armored vehicles, support infantry, and related equipment. Directs
training, administration, supply maintenance, transportation, and security
activities of the unit.

b. Branch qualifications. DA Pam 600-3 lists qualifications for
entry and professional development in this branch.
c. Armor, General (12A).
(1) Description of duties. Performs in leadership or staff positions
which require skills involving general armor field knowledge.
(2) Special qualifications. Must have appropriate training in both
tank and reconnaissance weapon systems (employed as combined
arms unit) at the Armor School, or equivalent training or experience.
(3) Special grading of positions. The Recon Platoon Leader in a
Ranger Regiment will be graded CPT.
(4) Unique duty positions. None.
d. Armor (12B).
(1) Description of duties. Performs in leadership or staff positions
of tank units or tank specific positions at higher headquarters.
(2) Special qualifications. Requires completion of the 12B (tank
tactics) track of the Armor Officer Basic Course or equivalent training
or experience.
(3) Special grading of positions. None.
(4) Unique duty positions. None.
e. Cavalry (12C).
(1) Description of duties. Performs in leadership or staff positions
o f A r m o r R e c o n n a i s s a n c e u n i t s o r c a v a l r y s p e c i f i c p o s i t i o n s a t
higher headquarters.
(2) Special qualifications. Requires completion of Scout Leader
Course, Calvary Leaders Course, or a minimum of 12 months actual
experience as a cavalry officer (AOC 12C).
(3) Special grading of positions. Divisional Cavalry Squadron
HHT Commander (MAJ).
(4) Unique duty positions. None.
3–3. Field Artillery (13) (Proponent: Field Artillery School)
a . B r a n c h d e s c r i p t i o n . E n c o m p a s s e s p o s i t i o n s w h i c h p r o v i d e s
fire support to maneuver elements through the tactical and operational
employment of field artillery systems. Commands, directs,
and controls field artillery units at all levels. Directs technical fire
control and firing operations using both manual and computer techniques.
Coordinates the collective employment of joint and combined
fire support assets to include non-lethal systems in support of
the combined arms commander. Participates in the planning and
development of doctrine, organization, training, material, leadership,
and soldier initiatives to support the field artillery’s role in combined
arms operations.
b. Branch qualification. DA Pam 600-3 lists qualifications for
entry and professional development in this branch.
c. Field Artillery, General (13A).
(1) Description of duties. Commands or assists the commander of
field artillery units. Plan, coordinates, and directs field artillery activities
within the command. Serves in positions requiring knowledge
of field artillery systems, experience at various staff levels.
(2) Special qualifications. Must have completed the Field Artillery
Officer Basic Course. Must use the basic knowledge gained in
that course to conduct successful field artillery operations and as a
building block for future training and experience.
(3) Special grading of positions. None.
