8–75. <strong>Military</strong> <strong>Occupational</strong> Specialty 640A—Veterinary<br />

Services Technician<br />

a. Licensing/certification requirement. None.<br />

b. Prerequisites. DA Cir 601 series.<br />

c. MOS 640A. MOS 640A is an accession MOS. The enlisted<br />

feeder MOS is 91R. MOS, Grade, <strong>and</strong> Time-in-Service prerequisites<br />

can be waived if the applicant has a BS or MS degree in one of<br />

these specialties: Food Science, Food Technology, Food Chemistry,<br />

Food Microbiology, Meat Science, Poultry Science, Dairy Science,<br />

Quality Assurance, Quality Engineering, Public Health, Environmental<br />

Health, or Environmental Sanitation.<br />

d. Associated SQI.<br />

(1) 0—No special qualifications.<br />

(2) 7—Parachutist.<br />

(3) 8—Instructor.<br />

(4) T—Transition (personnel only).<br />

(5) Z—Research, Development, Test, <strong>and</strong> Evaluation Technician.<br />

e. Associated ASI.<br />

(1) 6M—Mobilization <strong>and</strong> Demobilization Operations.<br />

(2) 6P—Master Fitness Trainer.<br />

f. Qualifications.<br />

(1) WO1/CW2 must—<br />

(a) Complete the Veterinary Services Technician Warrant Officer<br />

Basic Course.<br />

(b) Complete the Warrant Officer Advanced Course (Phase 1).<br />

(c) Must have tact, diplomacy, <strong>and</strong> similar person qualities which<br />

instill confidence <strong>and</strong> uphold the honesty <strong>and</strong> integrity of the <strong>Army</strong><br />

Veterinary Service.<br />

(d) Have 20/20 correctable vision, normal color discrimination<br />

per AR 40-501, full use of both h<strong>and</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> a keen sense of smell.<br />

( e ) B e a U . S . c i t i z e n . Q u a l i f y f o r a s e c u r i t y c l e a r a n c e o f<br />

SECRET.<br />

(2) CW3 must—<br />

(a) Meet qualifications described in paragraph f(1).<br />

(b) Complete the AMEDD Officer Advanced Course.<br />

(3) CW4 must—<br />

(a) Meet qualifications described in paragraph f(2).<br />

(b) Complete the Warrant Officer Staff Course (WOSC).<br />

(4) CW5 must—<br />

(a) Meet qualifications described in paragraph f(3).<br />

(b) Complete the Warrant Officer Senior Staff Course (WOSSC).<br />

g. Duties.<br />

(1) WO1/CW2—<br />

(a) Manages <strong>and</strong> directs military food safety <strong>and</strong> quality assurance<br />

programs to include personnel, facilities, <strong>and</strong> equipment under<br />

the guidance <strong>and</strong> supervision of the senior Veterinary Corps Officer<br />

(VCO).<br />

(b) Organizes <strong>and</strong> conducts sanitary inspections, recognizes sanitary<br />

deficiencies, <strong>and</strong> determines sanitary compliance ratings of civ<br />

i l i a n a n d g o v e r n m e n t f a c i l i t i e s t h a t p r o d u c e , p r o c e s s , p r e p a r e ,<br />

manufacture, store, or otherwise h<strong>and</strong>le subsistence.<br />

(c) Provides technical advice concerning food safety <strong>and</strong> quality<br />

assurance issues to military acquisition, supply, <strong>and</strong> retail activities.<br />

( d ) I d e n t i f i e s a n d p r o v i d e s t e c h n i c a l i n f o r m a t i o n c o n c e r n i n g<br />

microbiological, chemical, <strong>and</strong> physical deterioration of subsistence.<br />

(e) Interfaces with DOD, Federal, State, local, <strong>and</strong> host-nation<br />

i n s p e c t i o n a u t h o r i t i e s a n d r e g u l a t o r y h e a l t h a g e n c i e s c o n c e r n i n g<br />

food safety <strong>and</strong> quality assurance matters.<br />

(f) Observes, records, <strong>and</strong> reports on subsistence problems that<br />

may have public health significance.<br />

(g) Interviews patients <strong>and</strong> collects data on food borne disease of<br />

public health significance to assist epidemiological investigations.<br />

(h) Develops/conducts food safety <strong>and</strong> quality assurance training<br />

to support local unit mission requirements.<br />

(2) CW3—<br />

(a) Performs duties described in paragraph g(1).<br />

(b) Provides supervision/guidance for food safety <strong>and</strong> quality assurance<br />

programs in a tactical environment at Division/Corps level<br />

to include slaughter <strong>and</strong> processing of food animals in emergency<br />

s i t u a t i o n s a n d t h e p r o c u r e m e n t o f f o o d s t o c k s f r o m f o r e i g n<br />

establishments.<br />

(c) Provides technical advice on subsistence quality assurance<br />

engineering principles for the acquisition, assembly, storage, <strong>and</strong><br />

distribution of operational rations for DoD.<br />

(3) CW4—<br />

(a) Performs duties described in paragraph g(2).<br />

(b) Provides guidance for food safety <strong>and</strong> quality assurance programs<br />

to subordinate food inspection elements or other staff elements<br />

in a tactical environment at echelons above Corps or at a<br />

Major Medical Comm<strong>and</strong> Regional Medical Center.<br />

(c) Serves as the technical consultant on the staff of the Senior<br />

Veterinary Officer within a tactical theater of operations or at a<br />

Major Medical Comm<strong>and</strong> Regional Medical Center concerning all<br />

food inspection matters.<br />

(d) Provides guidance <strong>and</strong> technical advice concerning Statistical<br />

Process Control (SPC), Systems Auditing, Total Quality Management<br />

(TQM), <strong>and</strong> other quality engineering programs as a Quality<br />

Engineer at selected positions on the senior staff at a Major Medical<br />

Comm<strong>and</strong> or DOD Acquisition Agency Headquarters.<br />

(4) CW5—<br />

(a) Performs duties described in paragraph g(3).<br />

(b) Serves as the technical consultant on the staff of the Senior<br />

Veterinary Officer at a Major Medical Comm<strong>and</strong> concerning all<br />

food inspection matters.<br />

(c) Provides guidance <strong>and</strong> technical advice to subordinate food<br />

inspection elements or other staff elements providing food inspection<br />

support to all levels of the Armed Forces.<br />

h. Grading <strong>and</strong> position titles. Authorized position titles are provided<br />

in tables 6-2 <strong>and</strong> 6-3. The following grades are used to code<br />

positions into one of four definable skill levels: W2 equals WO1/<br />

CW2; W3 equals CW3; W4 equals CW4; <strong>and</strong> W5 equals CW5. The<br />

grades are listed in the following st<strong>and</strong>ards of grade tables:<br />

(1) Table 8-640A-1. St<strong>and</strong>ards of grade TOE/MTOE.<br />

(2) Table 8-640A-2. St<strong>and</strong>ards of grade TDA.<br />

8–76. Branch 67—Medical Service Corps<br />

(Proponent: Office of the Surgeon General) Manages a program for<br />

the maintenance of medical materiel; trains <strong>and</strong>/or assists subordinates<br />

in complex medical systems; manages a repair parts program;<br />

coordinates internal maintainers for multiple MOS medical systems;<br />

coordinates external maintainers for multiple MOS medical systems;<br />

o p e r a t e s a d i r e c t e x c h a n g e p r o g r a m ; a c q u i r e s m e d i c a l s t a n d b y<br />

equipment or manpower support; supervises controlled exchange of<br />

repair parts as a repair methodology; <strong>and</strong> provides h<strong>and</strong>s-on maintenance<br />

services as dictated by the casualty impact upon operable<br />

equipment.<br />

8–77. Area of Concentration 670—Health Services<br />

Maintenance<br />

Serves as the only specialty trained maintenance officer in the <strong>Army</strong><br />

Medical Department. Manages the health facility maintenance requirements<br />

by applying technical knowledge <strong>and</strong> technical management<br />

skills. Supervises the technical <strong>and</strong> tactical performance of a<br />

myriad of maintainer MOSs. Manages maintenance operations of<br />

various types <strong>and</strong> sized. Advises on equipment systems compatibility,<br />

replacement, <strong>and</strong> economical retention. Evaluates performance<br />

a n d q u a l i t y o f e q u i p m e n t t h r o u g h a n a n a l y s i s o f m a i n t e n a n c e<br />

indicators.<br />
