(b) Responsible for MOS proponency <strong>and</strong> career management<br />

functions.<br />

h. Grading <strong>and</strong> position titles. Authorized position titles are provided<br />

in tables 6-2 <strong>and</strong> 6-3. The following grades are used to code<br />

positions into one of four definable skill levels: W2 equals WO1/<br />

CW2; W3 equals CW3; W4 equals CW4; <strong>and</strong> W5 equals CW5. The<br />

grades are listed in the following st<strong>and</strong>ards of grade tables:<br />

(1) Table 8-550A-1. St<strong>and</strong>ards of grade TOE/MTOE.<br />

(2) Table 8-550A-2. St<strong>and</strong>ards of grade TDA.<br />

8–70. Branch 60—Medical Corps<br />

(Proponent: Office of The Surgeon General) Provides health care<br />

<strong>and</strong> performs administrative duties in medical treatment facilities as<br />

assigned by supervisor. Provides for preparation of reports <strong>and</strong> records<br />

including entries in clinical record forms <strong>and</strong> maintenance of<br />

records relating to patient care. Supervises, or assists in supervising<br />

enlisted specialists <strong>and</strong> comparable civilian employees in use, care,<br />

maintenance, <strong>and</strong> economy of medical supplies <strong>and</strong> equipment. Organizes<br />

<strong>and</strong> conducts training of enlisted specialists <strong>and</strong> appropriate<br />

civilian personnel in technical aspects of patient care <strong>and</strong> treatments.<br />

8–71. Area of concentration 600—Health Care Delivery<br />

There is one warrant officer specialty within this AOC. The skills<br />

<strong>and</strong> knowledge required to qualify for this specialty provide technical<br />

assistance to the <strong>Army</strong>’s health care program.<br />

8–72. <strong>Military</strong> <strong>Occupational</strong> Specialty 600A—Physician<br />

Assistant<br />

(For personnel only during transition period (Active Component—4<br />

December 1996, Reserve Component—4 December 2001)). Refer to<br />

AOC 65D for additional information.<br />

a. Duties.<br />

(1) Warrant officer—<br />

(a) Knows role of The Surgeon General, medical facilities, <strong>and</strong><br />

personnel in providing medical support to the military community.<br />

(b) Provides limited primary <strong>and</strong> specialized care of the sick <strong>and</strong><br />

wounded under the guidance <strong>and</strong> supervision of a physician to all<br />

categories of patients (active duty), family members, <strong>and</strong> retired.<br />

Orders appropriate diagnostic X-ray <strong>and</strong> laboratory procedures to<br />

support or aid in diagnosis <strong>and</strong> treatment plan.<br />

(c) Interviews patients to collect historical personal <strong>and</strong> health<br />

data to compile comprehensive medical histories. Examines, diagnoses,<br />

<strong>and</strong> treats or prescribes courses of treatment <strong>and</strong> medications<br />

for sick <strong>and</strong> wounded personnel in troop medical clinics, field units,<br />

fixed outpatient clinics, or other medical treatment facilities. Interp<br />

r e t s i n f o r m a t i o n i n h e a l t h r e c o r d s f o r a p p l i c a t i o n t o c u r r e n t<br />

condition.<br />

(d) Knows channels for consultation <strong>and</strong> referral of patients requiring<br />

special procedures or a physician’s evaluation.<br />

(e) Underst<strong>and</strong>s basic epidemiologic principles involved in the<br />

transmission of disease. Recognizes or suspects infectious diseases,<br />

<strong>and</strong> knows the control, prevention, <strong>and</strong> reporting actions that are<br />

immediately necessary.<br />

(f) Provides initial treatment for organic confusional states, suicidal<br />

states, alcoholism, <strong>and</strong> drug dependency behavior, <strong>and</strong> emotional<br />

disorders.<br />

(g) Classifies patients in accordance with their ailments <strong>and</strong> sets<br />

priorities for their evacuation when necessary. In the absence of a<br />

physician, is the primary source of advice to determine the medical<br />

necessity, priority, <strong>and</strong> requirements for patient evacuation. Knows<br />

types <strong>and</strong> methods of medical evacuation available <strong>and</strong> has the<br />

ability to prioritize <strong>and</strong> prepare patients for evacuation by the most<br />

appropriate means.<br />

( h ) O r g a n i z e s , i n s t r u c t s , a n d s u p e r v i s e s e n l i s t e d s o l d i e r s a n d<br />

civilan personnel in first aid, personal hygiene, field sanitation, heat<br />

<strong>and</strong> cold injury, drug abuse, other health hazards, <strong>and</strong> the technical<br />

aspects of patient care <strong>and</strong> treatment.<br />

(i) Supervises preparation of reports pertaining to medical activities.<br />

Operates equipment routinely used in care <strong>and</strong> treatment of<br />

patients.<br />

(j) Supervises preventive medical programs to prevent potential<br />

zoonotic <strong>and</strong> foodborne diseases. Conserves health of personnel by<br />

application of diversified knowledge of diagnostic, therapeutic, <strong>and</strong><br />

surgical procedures.<br />

(k) Performs routine periodic medical examinations, as required<br />

in AR 40-501 (para 3-2b) on individuals in the Personnel Reliability<br />

Program (PRP) (See AR 40-48, chap 3, para 3-2g).<br />

(2) CW4—<br />

(a) Performs the duties described for Warrant Officer level in<br />

paragraph a(1) above.<br />

(b) Provides technical guidance <strong>and</strong> direction to warrant officer<br />

level Physician Assistants.<br />

(c) Manages subordinate personnel, facilities, <strong>and</strong> equipment required<br />

to staff <strong>and</strong> operate troop clinics, or other military activities<br />

<strong>and</strong> organizations. As clinic OIC, directs the technical aspects of<br />

enlisted medical personnel or appropriate civilian medical personnel.<br />

As a staff officer, provides medical advice on health <strong>and</strong> welfare of<br />

troops to comm<strong>and</strong>er.<br />

(3) CW5—<br />

(a) Performs the duties described for the Senior Warrant Officer<br />

in paragraph a(2) above.<br />

(b) Responsible for providing guidance <strong>and</strong> technical input to<br />

subordinate elements or other staff elements.<br />

(c) Instructs, develops, conducts, or supervises the instruction of<br />

students.<br />

(d) Performs the duties of Career Management or Consultant to<br />

The Surgeon General at the DA staff level.<br />

b. Restrictions. Physician Assistants will not be assigned nonmedical<br />

duties of any type other than those for which specifically<br />

trained. Duties, supervision, use, functions, <strong>and</strong> credentialing of<br />

physician assistants are further described in AR 40-48 (chap 3) <strong>and</strong><br />

any deviation requires approval of The Surgeon General, Department<br />

of the <strong>Army</strong>.<br />

8–73. Branch 64—Veterinary Corps<br />

(Proponent: Office of The Surgeon General) The Veterinary Corps<br />

(VC) is a special branch of the <strong>Army</strong> organized under the <strong>Army</strong><br />

Medical Department (AMEDD) that serves as the DoD executive<br />

agent for worldwide military veterinary services. It is composed of<br />

commissioned officers that are graduates of schools of veterinary<br />

medicine accredited by the Council of Education of the American<br />

V e t e r i n a r y M e d i c a l A s s o c i a t i o n a n d w a r r a n t o f f i c e r s p o s s e s s i n g<br />

MOS 640A. The Veterinary Corps encompasses those positions in<br />

which the knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills required <strong>and</strong> the services performed<br />

are associated with the prevention of human illness from food or<br />

animal sources, the wholesomeness <strong>and</strong> quality of subsistence, the<br />

health <strong>and</strong> welfare of animals, <strong>and</strong> experimental <strong>and</strong> comparative<br />

biomedical research involving animals.<br />

8–74. Area of Concentration 640—Veterinary Services<br />
