22. What kind of death did Jesus die on His
cross? How does that relate to the real purpose
of His becoming one with us?
In past decades we as a denomination have not
emphasized the reality of Christ's death on the
cross as being the second death. But recently, this
idea has begun to find recognition. It was clearly
recognized in the Sabbath School Quarterly for the
Fourth Quarter 1994, and in Dwight Nelson's The
Godforsaken God (1993). It is also presented in
this author's Grace on Trial (1988, pp. 39-41), and
"Lightened With His Glory" (1991; pp. 17,18,
etc.). This truth packs a powerful charge of
spiritual dynamite.
In becoming man and dying our death, Christ
won the right to become the new Head of the
human race. He is now the "last Adam," having
replaced the former head of our race who fell into
sin. Had Christ not taken our fallen nature and
"become sin for us who knew no sin," He could not
