90 Journeys In the kingdom of the polar bear At full blast on a snowmobile but it’s far from where I leave. It’s also good to know some local people when you decide to go. It’s an island far up north and I have been looking at the place for snowkiting for a long time. I´ve planned trips up there before, but something always came up, so I could not go. Luck was about to change. It was bad weather and not a lot of snow where I was planning to go. I was looking at the weather forecast and it predicted storms all over me. I was just looking at Svalbard like I always do and it looked like it was sunny for the next week. I was sitting dreaming that I could go there, but it was not planned and I did not have a place to stay so I was just dreaming. The next morning I woke up and saw a message on my phone. It was a friend asking me to go to Svalbard. They had a house and a guide waiting for them so I just had to take
the plane. I was right away looking at the tickets and booked one straightaway for the night. It’s easy to get there, it’s just direct flight from Oslo (with a pit stop in Tromsø). But the hard thing is to get a place to stay in the high season. I was lucky to stay with friends and also to know them so I could join them for trips. The airport is in Longyearbyen, a small city with some hotels and hostels so you really need to know where to stay before you book a trip. I waited too long to come up here! When I arrived, the sun was shining with powder in the mountains. It felt like I had landed on a white moon. My first thoughts were… why didn´t I come up here before? I saw white mountains with no trees around. It was just perfect for snowkite and skiing. I was in heaven. The first day I spent it around town with Tom and Christian waiting for the other ones to come. We went kiting a bit in an area overlooking the town. It was already midnight sun, so we could be outside 24/7. What a place and what a country. Norway never stops to impress me. There were reindeers walking around in the streets and Christian, the local, told us that they were walking around on the whole island and citizens on Svalbard, could hunt one each every year. They were so cute with their small legs.
