ÇRÉ NITYÄNANDA CARITÄMÅTA
a doubt. He had firm faith in and devotion for the lotus feet of
Caitanyacandra, but he failed to understand the influence of
Nityänanda Svarüpa.
Once, this brähmaëa went to Néläcala for some days. He
regularly visited Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu, for he had firm faith
in His lotus feet. One day, the brähmaëa said in private, “O
Lord, I would like to ask You something, if You will allow me. If
You really think of me as Your servant, then please answer my
question. I do not understand what Nityänanda Avadhüta is doing
in Navadvépa.
“Everyone says that He is a sannyäsé, but He chews betel
nuts with camphor. A sannyäsé is not supposed to touch gold
and other such opulences, but Nityänanda decorates His entire
body with gold, silver, and pearls. Abandoning the kaupéna
and saffron robes, He dresses in gorgeous clothing. He also puts
sandalwood paste on His body. Why does He carry an iron rod
instead of a sannyäsa-daëòa? He always mingles with çüdras. I
do not find His behavior in accordance with the scriptures, and
so I have a doubt in my heart about His character. Everyone
addresses Him as an exalted personality, but He does not follow
the rules and regulations of His äçrama.
“O Lord, if You think of me as Your servant, then please
explain to me the truth.”
Because the pious brähmaëa inquired from the Lord at an
auspicious moment, Çré Gaurasundara explained everything to
him.
çuna bipra mahä adhikäré ye ba haya
tabe täëra doya guëa kichu nä janmaya
“Listen, my dear brähmaëa. Faults or defects do
not affect an exalted person.
