all over the courtyard. He laughed, cried, and danced in his own<br />

mood. Finally, the brähmaëa calmed down and narrated the entire<br />

story to the Lord.<br />

He said, “O Lord, I live in Navadvépa. I am a brähmaëa<br />

in name only. My behavior is worse than that of a hunter or<br />

dog-eater. O Lord, I always remain in the association of thieves<br />

whose only business is to plunder. I do nothing but commit violence<br />

to others. Everyone in Navadvépa trembles upon seeing<br />

me. There is no sin I have not committed. Seeing Your valuable<br />

ornaments, I wanted to steal them.<br />

“One day, I picked up my weapons and came with other<br />

thieves to steal Your riches. That day, You bewildered me with<br />

sleep. However, by the influence of Your illusory energy, I was<br />

unable to recognize You. Another day, after worshiping Goddess<br />

Caëòé, I came to Your house, along with my men, armed<br />

with swords, knives, and tridents. However, to my surprise, I saw<br />

a wonderful thing. Many huge guards surrounded Your house.<br />

Each appeared like a drunken elephant. They were adorned<br />

with flower garlands hanging down to their knees, and they<br />

constantly chanted the Holy names of Lord Hari as You peacefully<br />

slept inside.<br />

“O Lord, I was so sinful that I still could not understand<br />

Your glories. That night, we returned home, thinking You had<br />

hired some guards for Your safety. After a gap of a few days, we<br />

came again yesterday, but as soon as we got near Your house,<br />

we lost our eyesight and fell down. We suffered terribly, being<br />

pricked by thorns, bitten by leeches and bugs, and pounded<br />

by a hailstorm. We were so tormented that we could hardly<br />

move.<br />

“After being punished by Yamaräja in this way, we finally<br />

attained pure devotion for Your lotus feet. By Your causeless<br />

mercy, we can remember Your lotus feet without deviation. It is<br />

by Your mercy alone that we regained our sight.<br />

“O Lord, You are indeed the savior of the fallen. You have<br />

saved us from further misery. This is the glory of remembering<br />

You.<br />

“O Nityänanda, O Çré Bäla-gopäla, please protect me. You<br />

are the only maintainer of all living beings. They say that al-<br />
