ÇRÉ NITYÄNANDA CARITÄMÅTA
However, the night they chose to break into the Lord’s house
was, by providence, the darkest night imaginable. It was so dark
that people were unable to move about.
At the dead of this black night, the thieves armed themselves
with weapons and assembled. When they approached
the Lord’s house, they were suddenly blinded and could not see
anything. This sudden blindness so shocked the thieves that
their minds, intelligence, and life airs almost ceased to function.
One fell in a ditch and was immediately covered by mosquitoes,
leeches, and gadflies. Another fell into the pit where people
wash their hands after eating and scorpions and bugs bit him.
Another thief fell onto a heap of thorns. He suffered miserably
from the pricking of thorns and could not move. Another one
fell in a ditch and broke his hands and legs. Some of the thieves
got a very high fever.
As the thieves were in this state of confusion, Indra, the
king of heaven, happily sent forth showers of rain, creating
a great storm. First, the thieves were tortured by the bites of
leeches and bugs, and now they suffered from a hailstorm.
They wished for death to come, but life would not leave them
and so they floated on an ocean of miseries. The force of the
heavy gale and pounding hail and the loud peals of thunder
rendered them almost unconscious. The downpour completely
drenched the thieves and due to the cold, they shivered
uncontrollably.
Because the thieves had come to steal from Nityänanda
Prabhu, Indra, the king of heaven, angrily tortured them. At
last, the sinful brähmaëa leader of the thieves had a change of
heart. He thought to himself, “Nityänanda is not an ordinary
human being. He must be God. What the people say is true. The
first day, He bewildered us by making us fell into deep sleep. By
the influence of His illusory energy, we could not understand a
thing. Then, the next day, He displayed His prowess by manifesting
many wonderful guards. Yet, still I could not comprehend
His greatness. The agony we are now suffering is proper
for a sinner like me. I dared to steal from the Lord! Who can
save me now? There is no alternative for me. I must surrender to
this Avadhüta Nityänanda.”
