beating 17 Me, they were at once became entangled in unbreakable
bondage simply by this thought.
“I appeared to deliver the people of this world, but instead
I have personally ruined them all. You will see how tomorrow I
will shave My head and accept the renounced order, sannyäsa. I
will then beg arms door to door. Those who wanted to kill Me,
I will go to their doors tomorrow as a beggar. Seeing Me in that
form, people will fall at My feet. I will thus deliver the entire
world. People generally respect a sannyäsé and would not dare
beat him. I will take sannyäsa and wander door to door begging
for alms. Let us see who will beat Me.
“I have thus disclosed My heart to You. I am determined to
give up My household life. Please do not feel sad because of this.
Rather, You should encourage Me to take sannyäsa. I will do
whatever You make Me do. Suggest to Me the means whereby
I can accept sannyäsa. If You really want to deliver the entire
world, then do not forbid Me in this matter. Do not even feel
distressed, for You know the reason for My incarnation.
“Please hear one more thing, dear Çrépäda Nityänanda Gosäi.
You should disclose My intention to only five persons. During
the coming summer solstice, when the sun moves from one
17 Once, Mahäprabhu, fully absorbed in gopé-bhäva in the mood
of Rädhäräëé, chanted, “Gopé, gopé.” One of His students happened to
hear Him. The student was unable to understand why Mahäprabhu
was chanting, “Gopé, gopé.” He told the Lord, “Chant Kåñëa!, Kåñëa!
What will You get by chanting gopé, gopé? The çästras say that it is
Kåñëa’s name that bears fruit and not the name of gopé.”
Mahäprabhu was fully absorbed in rädhä-bhäva and considered
the student to be a messenger of Kåñëa. Mahäprabhu said, “What
is the use of chanting the name of Kåñëa, who is full of faults and
vices.”
Mahäprabhu had been describing all the faults of Kåñëa, and
the student had protested. In a fit of rage, Mahäprabhu picked up a
stick, being ready to beat the student. The student ran away in fear
while Mahäprabhu was ran after him. Somehow, the devotees pacified
Mahäprabhu. The unfortunate student told everything to his friends.
Finding fault with Mahäprabhu’s chanting the name gopé, the students
conspired to beat Him.
