Mädhäi’s Prayers to Nityänanda Prabhu and His Devotional Service
fortune do you need than this? Humbly offer obeisances to everyone.
Then all your offenses will be forgiven.”
Being advised in this way by Lord Nityänanda, Mädhäi circumambulated
Him and departed. When Mädhäi chanted the
holy names, “Kåñëa, Kåñëa,” tears flowed from his eyes. People
were astonished to see how Mädhäi cleansed and decorated the
bathing ghäöas at the Ganges. They considered him a wonderful
person. He offered humble obeisances in return and appealed
to everyone: “Please forgive all the offenses I have knowingly or
unknowingly committed, and bestow your mercy upon me.”
Seeing Mädhäi crying, everyone else began to cry. While
looking at him, they remembered Lord Govinda. When the
people of Nadia heard this, they understood that Nimäi
Paëòita had transformed Jagäi and Mädhäi into glorious
Vaiñëavas. Hearing this, people were highly astonished, concluding
that Nimäi Paëòita could not be an ordinary human
being.
“Many sinful people criticize Nimäi Paëòita without understanding
His real identity,” they said. “He performs wonderul
kértana, being truly Kåñëa’s servant. Anyone who ridicules Him
is doomed. Anyone who can rectify the most degraded persons,
Jagäi and Mädhäi, must be God Himself, or at least empowered
by God. Anyway, Nimäi Paëòita is not an ordinary mortal being.
Now His actual glories have been revealed.”
The people of Nadia spoke like this among themselves and
gave up indulging in needless criticism of Lord Caitanya. Mädhäi
performed severe austerities and he soon became celebrated
in Nadia as a brahmacäré, or celibate person. Living by the shore
of the Ganges, he always saw her flowing waves. He personally
dug the earth with a shovel to build a bathing ghäöa. By
the mercy of Lord Caitanya, even today, one can see the ruins
of his ghäöa, which was popularly known as Mädhäira-ghäöa.
The causeless mercy of Lord Caitanya and Prabhu Nityänanda
transformed both plunderers into pure devotees.
The topics of Madhya-khaëòa are like drops of nectar describing
the salvation of formidable atheists. The principle cause
of all these wonders is Mahäprabhu Gauracandra. Anyone who
feels distress while hearing these narrations is certainly a cheater.
