The ‘Grande Dame’ of Falmouth…
The Falmouth Hotel, known as the ‘Grande Dame of Falmouth’, first opened in 1865, as Isambard
Kingdom Brunel expanded the Great Western Railway into Cornwall. Its castle-like Victorian
architecture, spacious interiors, fantastic seafront location and award-winning food has ensured its
place as one of Cornwall’s best known hotels.
The hotel has witnessed many key moments in British history, including the Diamond Jubilees of Queen
Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II, National Strikes in 1911 and was taken over by the War Department in
1917 for the purposes of a military hospital. During World War Two, the hotel was camouflaged by the
Admiralty, who also commandeered the entire fourth floor as offices. By the spring of 1944, the areas
around the hotel and Falmouth were used in preparation for the D Day landings.
Many famous people have passed through the hotel’s doors, including Edward VII, when Prince of
Wales, Dame Anna Neagle, famous children’s authoress Beatrix Potter, pop icon Simon Le Bon and
film stars such as Jeremy Brett, Sarah Brightman and Tara Fitzgerald.
Keith Richardson purchased the hotel in 2004 and it has been undergoing a programme of
refurbishment to improve its interiors and highlight its beautiful architectural features. The Falmouth
Hotel is an AA 3 Star hotel and holds an AA Rosette for Fine Dining.
