Nell Luter Floyd When Judy Cox married Ron Henderson in 1984, she walked down the aisle in an ivory-colored, full-length wedding gown with princess styling, a fitted bodice and puffed sleeves. Henderson’s daughter, Haley, chose a new gown from Kleinfeld Bridal in New York – the salon featured in TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress” – for her wedding to Taylor Parks on April 2 at Parkview Church of God in Yazoo City. But for the reception at Providence Hill Farm in Jackson, she wore something equally as special: a wedding romper with detachable train created by designer Sandra Ashford of Ridgeland from Judy Henderson’s gown. “Haley wanted to do something with my dress,” said Judy Henderson of Madison. “She didn’t want to re-make it into a dress for the rehearsal dinner. She found a picture of a romper and liked that.” A family heirloom can take on a whole new look in the hands of Ashford, who has re-styled more than 1,000 wedding gowns since the 1980s. “What I do is a way to preserve memories and create new ones,” Ashford said. “Retaining the heirloom features of an original gown is a delicate balance between yesterday and today’s designs. In the end, it may look like very little was done to a dress but that’s not always the case. Because of the layers and structure of a wedding gown, I often have to take the gown apart, may need to wash the gown to remove stains and then re-size it and re-style it so it becomes the bride’s perfect dress.” Hometown madison • 29
