which have been indulged through life and have<br />

educated the appetite. The dem<strong>on</strong> of intemperance<br />

is not easily c<strong>on</strong>quered. It is of giant strength and<br />

hard to overcome. But let parents begin a crusade<br />

against intemperance at their own firesides, in their<br />

own families, in the principles they teach their<br />

children to follow from their very infancy, and they<br />

may hope for success. It will pay you, mothers, to<br />

use the precious hours which are given you of God<br />

in forming, developing, and training the characters<br />

of your children, and in teaching them to strictly<br />

adhere to the principles of temperance in eating<br />

and drinking.<br />

Parents may have transmitted to their children<br />

tendencies to appetite and passi<strong>on</strong>, which will<br />

make more difficult the work of educating and<br />

training these children to be strictly temperate and<br />

to have pure and virtuous habits. If the appetite for<br />

unhealthy food and for stimulants and narcotics has<br />

been transmitted to them as a legacy from their<br />

parents, what a fearfully solemn resp<strong>on</strong>sibility rests<br />

up<strong>on</strong> the parents to counteract the evil tendencies<br />

which they have given to their children! How<br />
