designed. The do-nothing system is a dangerous<br />

<strong>on</strong>e in any case. Physical exercise in the directi<strong>on</strong><br />

of useful labor has a happy influence up<strong>on</strong> the<br />

mind, strengthens the muscles, improves the<br />

circulati<strong>on</strong>, and gives the invalid the satisfacti<strong>on</strong> of<br />

knowing how much he can endure, and that he is<br />

not wholly useless in this busy world; whereas, if<br />

this is restricted, his attenti<strong>on</strong> is turned to himself<br />

and he is in c<strong>on</strong>stant danger of exaggerating his<br />

difficulties. If invalids would engage in some welldirected<br />

physical exercise, using their strength but<br />

not abusing it, they would find it an effective agent<br />

in their recovery.<br />

Walking for Exercise<br />

Those who are feeble and indolent should not<br />

yield to their inclinati<strong>on</strong> to be inactive, thus<br />

depriving themselves of air and sunlight, but<br />

should practice exercising out of doors in walking<br />

or working in the garden. They will become very<br />

much fatigued, but this will not injure them.... It is<br />

not good policy to give up the use of certain<br />
