the muscles into exercise. Daily, systematic labor<br />

should c<strong>on</strong>stitute a part of the educati<strong>on</strong> of the<br />

youth, even at this late period. Much can now be<br />

gained by c<strong>on</strong>necting labor with schools. In<br />

following this plan, the students will realize<br />

elasticity of spirit and vigor of thought, and will be<br />

able to accomplish more mental labor in a given<br />

time than they could by study al<strong>on</strong>e. And they can<br />

leave school with their c<strong>on</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s unimpaired,<br />

and with strength and courage to persevere in any<br />

positi<strong>on</strong> in which the providence of God may place<br />

them.<br />

With the present plan of educati<strong>on</strong>, a door of<br />

temptati<strong>on</strong> is opened to the youth. Although they<br />

generally have too many hours of study, they have<br />

many hours without anything to do. These leisure<br />

hours are frequently spent in a reckless manner.<br />

The knowledge of bad habits is communicated<br />

from <strong>on</strong>e to another, and vice is greatly increased.<br />
