obtain food for their tables which greatly injures<br />

the already overtaxed system. Women spend a<br />

great share of their time over a heated cookstove,<br />

preparing food, highly seas<strong>on</strong>ed with spices to<br />

gratify the taste. As a c<strong>on</strong>sequence, the children are<br />

neglected and do not receive moral and religious<br />

instructi<strong>on</strong>. The overworked mother neglects to<br />

cultivate a sweetness of temper, which is the<br />

sunshine of the dwelling. Eternal c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

become sec<strong>on</strong>dary. All the time has to be employed<br />

in preparing these things for the appetite which<br />

ruin health, sour the temper, and becloud the<br />

reas<strong>on</strong>ing faculties.<br />

A reform in eating would be a saving of<br />

expense and labor. The wants of a family can be<br />

easily supplied that is satisfied with plain,<br />

wholesome diet. Rich food breaks down the<br />

healthy organs of body and mind. And how many<br />
