after they are no longer the slaves of society. They would all like to turn out well, in the measure of freedom which is socially in store for them and becoming clear to
them. But for all that, the most visible hope remains the centrally steering influence of life in a society which has become healthy on the very diseases associated with
being born and being grown up, especially on their prevention, and on our lifespan. There is a long way to go and one which, as far as sensitive flesh is concerned, it
may not be possible to cover very satisfactorily for a long time to come. It is certainly not covered within the mere fitness for work in capitalist enterprise; for health is
something which should be enjoyed, not abused. A long painless life to a ripe old age, culminating in a death replete with life, is still outstanding, has constantly been
planned. As if newborn: this is what the outlines of a better world suggest as far as the body is concerned. But people cannot walk upright if social life itself still lies
crooked.
John Ball
I simply cannot imagine the present situation of mankind as being the one in which it will now remain, simply cannot imagine it as being its whole and final destiny.
Everything would then be a dream and an illusion; and it would not be worth the trouble of having lived and having joined in this constantly recurring, fruitless and
meaningless game. Only in so far as I can regard this state as the means to a better one, as the crossingpoint to a higher and more perfect one, does it acquire any
value for me; I am able to bear it not for its own sake, but for the sake of the better life for which it prepares the way.
Fichte, The Destiny of Man
In place of the old bourgeois society with its classes and class differences there arises an association in which the free development of every individual is the condition
for the free development of all.
