BMW
The new 320i Gran Turismo M Sport with more dynamic looks
and an even greater feeling of luxury inside
Now available in Singapore the new BMW 320i Gran Turismo M
Spor, combines the elegance of a coupé, with the spaciousness
of a luxury sedan, and the boot capacity of a station wagon.
At 4,824mm in length, the new BMW 320i Gran Turismo M
Sport is around 200 millimetres longer than the other members
of the BMW 3 Series family, taking it closer to luxury-class
territory. The design of the new BMW 320i Gran Turismo M
Sport, which has been sculpted to visibly greater dynamic
effect at both the front and rear, heightens the impression of
class.
The interior of the new BMW 320i Gran Turismo M Sport has
an even more sophisticated feel, thanks to upgraded materials
and accents. Extra chrome around the interior controls, and
new decorative wood elements, colours and leather trim
variants take perceived quality to another new level, while
the interior’s haptic and ergonomic attributes have also been
further enhanced.
New engine family: higher outputs, lower fuel consumption.
The new generation engine of the new BMW 320i Gran Turismo
M Sport offers compelling levels of sports performance, agility
and economy. The new BMW 320i Gran Turismo M Sport
develops 135kW/184hp and has a fuel consumption combined:
6.1-5.8 l/100km; CO2 emissions combined: 139-132 g/km.
The new BMW320i GranTurismo M Sport comes as standard
with the eight-speed Steptronic Sport Transmission.
Improvements in efficiency, an increase in ratio spread and
a reduction in converter slip during the gear-change process
bring about a three per cent drop in fuel consumption and CO2
emissions.
The Year of the
Rooster
We may have a long list of what we want for the
New Year. But it’s the simple things that are the
most special and precious. Happiness, good
health, family, friends, peace, freedom, food on
the table, a roof over our heads.
Hopefully we don’t have to survive a tragedy or earthshattering
event to put things into perspective for us - to wake
us up to what’s really meaningful and important. No money
in the world can buy us most of these things; and we should
stop taking things for granted and just be grateful.
The New Year is as special as it can be if we can just enjoy the
most simple things in life, and be thankful for them.
Ulysse Nardin proudly introduces the
Year of the Rooster Timepiece to the
Classico Collection.
Celebrating his energetic panache with
the Year of the Rooster, the timepiece
is the most recent addition to the
Classico Collection. Confident and
dynamic, the rooster rules the roost
with hard work and innate talent.
It is the centuries-old champlevé
method of enameling that brings the
artist’s sketch to life. A rare art form
and one mastered by very few, the
champlevé technique involves the
carving of cells with a chisel directly
on the dial, which are then filled with
enamel.
The “Year of the Rooster”, a limited
edition of 88 pieces in 18-karat rose
gold, is powered by the self-winding
UN-815 movement with its COSC
certification.
The Classico Rooster is a reliable
timepiece of elegant beauty, perfect for
the courageous, confident individual
with an instinct for success. The Hour
Glass is the exclusive distributor of
PARMIGIANI FLEURIER
Tonda Métrographe - A new energy
What defines the modern man’s day? Rhythmical and ordered,
it revolves around efficiency and seemingly countless
exchanges.
Ready for any eventuality, he must be able to count on his
timepiece, in terms of both function and design. Based on
this premise, Parmigiani Fleurier has revisited one of the most
iconic watches from the Tonda line. The new Métrographe
now offers a more dynamic design fuelled by watchmaking
references. The signature urban and expressive character has
been retained, but new indications such as the tachometer,
and revisited counter proportions ensure its place amongst
traditional chronographs, exuding all the hallmarks of fine
craftsmanship so desired by men in their quest for meaning.
The Metrographe is powered by the PF315 self-winding
movement with an additional chronograph module. Produced
in the Manufacture’s multi-discipline watch-making centre, the
movement features bridges decorated with Côtes de Genève.
The piece is available with a choice of two different straps: an
elegant and lightweight leather option and a steel version that
exudes sport chic.
Given a new injection of style and added vigour, the
Métrographe manages to retain its spirit whilst staying in
step with the times. The Hour Glass is the proud exclusive
distributor of Parmigiani in South East Asia.
This new timepiece retails from $18,950.
Three special limited-edition Portugieser Chronograph
IWC Schaffhausen is launching three special limited-edition
Portugieser Chronograph Rattrapante watches which are
dedicated to the cities of Milan, Paris and Munich. By doing
so, the Swiss watchmaking company is continuing a success
story that began in 1995 with the rst Portugieser Chronograph
Rattrapante. The timepieces are distinguished by a third
push-button for starting and stopping the split-seconds hand.
Beyond the capabilities of a pure chronograph, this also
enables a second short period of time to be measured with
down-to-the- second accuracy.
Milan - The Portugieser Chronograph Rattrapante Edition
“Boutique Milano”, with a red gold case and blue dial, is limited
to 100 pieces. Featuring a telemeter scale on the ange and
a tachymeter scale on the inner circle of the dial, the elegant
sports watch is secured to the wrist by a hand nished black
alligator leather strap. Paris - 250 watches are being launched
in the Edition “Boutique Rue de la Paix” with a stainless-steel
case, slate-coloured dial and black alligator leather strap.
Munich - the Edition “Boutique Munich”, has a stainless-steel
GIRARD-PERREGAUX
The 1966 collection welcomes the legendary ww.tc model
More relevant than ever in a globalised
world, the world time complication now
enriches the most stylish collection of urban
watches by Girard-Perregaux.
Certain horological complications have
arisen from grand human adventures. This is
certainly true of world time, whose invention
accompanied the pioneers of railways and
later of civil aviation. Playing an integral
part in this quest for innovation since 1791,
Girard-Perregaux is now reinterpreting one
of its most iconic models: the ww.tc. More
relevant than ever in a globalised world, this
function is for the first time available in the
most stylish collection of urban watches
from the Maison: 1966.
Powered by a Manufacture automatic
movement fitted with an additional module
developed in-house, the 1966 ww.tc is
endowed with a 46-hour power reserve. In
a sign of its excellent finishing, this calibre
enables the time and reference city to be
set in both directions, a manoeuver that is
prohibited on most movements. Finally, the
perpetual sweep of the small seconds hand
at 6 o’clock serves as a reliable operating
indicator.
In tribute to a particularly important year
for Girard-Perregaux, the 1966 collection is
distinguished by several distinctively elegant
characteristics: the case is topped by a slim,
delicately polished bezel framing a generous
opaline dial, protected by a sapphire crystal
glass and swept over by the line’s signature
“leaf-type” hands. The transparent caseback
reveals a mechanism meticulously
straight-grained, chamfered, circular-grained
and adorned with Côtes de Genève. The
Girard-Perregaux 1966 ww.tc is available in
two versions: one in pink gold with a black
alligator leather strap; and the other in steel.
MONTEGRAPPA
Limited edition Cognac Pen – a unique fountain pen enhanced
with a drop of the oldest cognac in the world
The Cognac Pen has been created by Montegrappa and contains an actual sample of the
oldest cognac in the world, provided for the project by the Wealth Solutions company.
The liquor, enclosed in a capsule, dates from 1762 and has been officially entered into the
Guinness Book of Records. French finesse and traditional Italian craftsmanship have merged
to create this true masterpiece.
The capsule containing the precious liquor is placed at the top of the ferrule. In keeping
with the tools of the craft of cognac distillation, the body of the Cognac Pen has been
manufactured from real oak wood. This makes reference to ancient local traditions and
requirements. According to French law, no liquor may be called cognac unless it has been
aged for at least two years in an oak cask, near Cognac. Decorative elements with grapevine
motifs on the body of this exquisite pen make further reference to noble French liquors.
Macan Turbo with Performance Package tops off the model line
As the sportscar of the compact SUV segment, the Porsche Macan has been setting
standards in terms of driving dynamics since it first made its debut. Now, Porsche
is upping the ante once again: Equipped with the Performance Package, the Macan
Turbo now tops off the model line, impressing with enhanced driving properties,
increased agility and an even greater emotional appeal.
After the performance enhancement, the twin-turbocharged, 3.6-litre V6 engine
delivers 324 kW (440 hp). With 30 kW (40 hp) more than the Macan Turbo, this figure
places this variant firmly in the top spot in this model line. The car now accelerates
from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds (a reduction of 0.4 seconds), and achieves a
new top speed of 272 km/h (an increase of 6 km/h).
The maximum torque has also risen to 600 Nm (an increase of 50 Nm) and is available
to the driver across a broad rev range of between 1,500 and 4,500 rpm. This also
increases the tractive force: In Sport Plus mode, the time taken to accelerate from
80 km/h to 120 km/h has dropped to 2.9 seconds (a reduction of 0.2 seconds). Fuel
consumption (in line with the NEDC) for the new top-of-the-range Macan model is 9.7
l/100 km.
MINI
Best Global Brands
No top-100 premium automotive brand makes
bigger gains than MINI as its brand value rises 18
percent to climb 10 places in Interbrand ranking
An emotional, authentic brand, with attractive products and distinctive brand
communications: The systematic realignment of the MINI brand is proving a success. In the
current Best Global Brands ranking compiled by the agency Interbrand, the value of the MINI
brand climbed 18 percent – the highest increase of any premium automotive brand in the
top 100, with only two others able to match this strong rate of growth. With a brand value of
around 4.9 billion US dollars, the British premium brand climbed ten places to number 88.
This strong growth in brand value stems from the systematic implementation of the brand
realignment announced in 2015. Design, authenticity and intrinsic value define the new brand
identity, which is reflected in the visual appearanceand new tonality of communications.
MINI aims to continue to actively shape the zeitgeist and connect with young, urban target
groups. To achieve this, MINI is also active outside of the automotive world. In 2016,
MINI Fashion participated in the PITTI Uomo menswear event; while MINI Living made
appearances at the Salone del Mobile and other shows. In late 2016, the brand will open an
ambitious centre for designers in Brooklyn, New York with the name A/D/O.
The steady growth of the MINI brand is accompanied by corresponding growth in product
sales. In the first eight months of 2016, sales rose 5.7 percent year-on-year to reach a total of
223,913 vehicles. The biggest growth drivers for the premium brand are the MINI Clubman –
including its most sporty variant, the newly released MINI John Cooper Works Clubman –and
the new MINI Cabrio introduced in the spring.
“Best Global Brands” 2016 is the 17th edition of the report published annually by global brand
consultancy Interbrand, which explores how brands determine the success of a company.
A CHAT WITH
MICHELLE
YONG
Co-founder of Collision 8, and
Director and COO of Aurum Land
BY Carol Kraal
Taking the reins as forth generation leader of
construction conglomerate, Woh Hup, Michelle Yong
actively engages in the business by spotting potential
business opportunities and developments.
The young mother of two, and holder of a Masters in
Economics from Oxford University, has good instincts in the
world of property, and is now Director and COO of Aurum Land,
Woh Hup’s property development arm.
She also co-founded Collision 8 with John Tan, with a vision to
offer membership and entrepreneurial space to a community of
innovators.
Yong may have a lot on her corporate plate but she still makes
time for her children and family. She reflects regularly, and
keeps to the right track of what really matters in life.
What was your main idea of starting Collision
8 with your co-founders?
The vision behind Collision 8 was to create a community of
people from diverse industries who are passionate about
innovation, to foster collaborative partnerships between them
and create new growth opportunities for all. John and I wanted
to bring our two distinct worlds together — the traditional
corporate world that I am from and the tech entrepreneur and
investor world that he is from — where two worlds collide. We
believe in facilitating high-value connections between people
who have different but complementary perspectives, skillsets
and resources to create new business opportunities.
Collision 8 is where people and ideas intersect to create
opportunities.
COVERFEATURE
The buzz word in entrepreneurship and innovation these
days is “Disruptive”. Do you consider yourself and your
co-founders of Collision 8 as a Disruptive Force?
I prefer to think that we are a platform for housing and nurturing those who
are a disruptive force in their respective fields. We are experts at creating
an environment (the combination of people and physical space) to drive
collaboration and innovation, and that innovation often comes with disruption
– of traditional business models, of ways of working, of the concept of space
as an actual business tool rather than just a circumstance. We hope that in
bringing people with such diverse backgrounds together, that our members
will inherently be disrupting the status quo and be inspired to build the next
big thing.
In what way does Collision 8 offer your membershipbased
innovators quality workspaces that inspire,
energise and bring ideas to life?
With a space design featuring a wrap-around library, smart glass for privacy at
the touch of a button, a marble-top bar with a killer view, and whiteboards on
the back of all office doors, we have combined beauty and function in Collision
8. With panoramic views of Marina Bay Sands, the CBD, Boat Quay and Fort
Canning Park, our space is designed to give our members the freedom to
imagine, experiment and create.
Members of Collision 8 are given workspace and all the perks that come with
it: Collision 8 is a convenient and conducive place to work, host meetings,
organize company events, attend workshops and learning sessions on
business relevant topics, utilise our mentors and open office hours assisting
you across a variety of industries and verticals, and gather with other
business leaders who are passionate about innovation. For those looking to
join Collision 8, we offer a variety of membership types, from hot desks to
permanent desks, and private offices.
You are a fourth generation leader of construction
conglomerate Woh Hup, spearheading its property
development arm Aurum. How has Collision 8, a
subsidiary of Aurum, weaved together these traditional
roots with a very young hi tech platform seamlessly?
Due to the protracted lull in the residential property market in Singapore,
Aurum Land started exploring new growth opportunities which combine
real estate and other services, creating new business concepts that have
not been attempted in Singapore before. Collision 8 is an example that taps
into i) Aurum Land’s strength in property development, ii) an explosion of
interest in coworking spaces, and iii) business growth through innovation and
collaboration, especially corporate startup engagement.
“I try to reflect regularly, to
better reassess if I am on the
right track or losing sight of
what really matters.”
Top of Aurum Land’s original mission statement is to gain brand recognition
as a boutique developer through high quality customer-centric design and
construction. We believe that good design which is customer focused will lead
to high profitability as well as customer satisfaction which will build brand
recognition in the market. This in turn will lead to sustained growth for the
company. With Collision 8, our philosophy has now broadened to prioritise
customer experience as well as design, and to build communities not just
physical spaces.
Therefore the common ground between both businesses is our strong focus
on customer needs, and on optimising the design of the underlying real estate.
“Collision 8 is
where people
and ideas
intersect to create
How do you relax after a hard day at work?
If I am lucky I get home around 6.30 or 7pm to have dinner with
my kids then play with them, bathe them and get them ready
for bed by 10pm, afterwhich I clear some emails and indulge in
an hour or so of Netflix! Every Friday my husband and I go out
for date night which is the only real chance we get to properly
catch up every week. Most of my relaxing is done at the
weekends when we take the kids out somewhere fun and also
make time for pilates or yoga class. On Sundays we like to hang
out at grandma and grandpa’s house and let them entertain the
kids while we put our feet up or get a massage.
How do you juggle your corporate life and
being a mother of two sons?
I am still learning to find a good work life balance and not get
too caught up in the exciting new business opportunities that
Aurum Land and in particular Collision 8 have presented me
with. I try to reflect regularly, to better reassess if I am on the
right track or losing sight of what really matters. If I forget to do
so, I can always rely on my husband to remind me — he has
been my greatest champion, challenger and friend.
You must travel a lot. What food do
you miss most when you’re away from
Singapore?
I am fortunate in that I do not have to travel much for
work - largely by choice. I have chosen to focus the
companies’ new business development opportunities
within Singapore so that I am not away from my young
children. We travel regularly as a family, to the UK to
visit my in-laws as well as all over South East Asia.
When I was abroad in the UK studying and working I
would miss roti prata most. That would always be my
first breakfast when I returned home!
What advice can you give a young girl
who wants to be a corporate property
boss and innovator like you?
I love being in real estate, creating tangible spaces
for people to enjoy, which I find immensely more
rewarding than writing reports and running financial
models which was the core of my previous role in
management consulting.
My advice to anyone would be to do what you love,
find your passion and work will become a pleasure.
Also to be creative, to always be on the look out for
new opportunities and keep an open mind.
Yang Fudong’s
New Video Work
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars unveils new work by
Chinese artist Yang Fudong as part of its Art Programme
The artist created a new video work which was launched at the Shanghai
Center of Photography (SCôP), Shanghai, located in the West Bund art area.
The artwork will be on public display at SCôP 13 December 2016 – 5 January
2017 and will be exhibited at further locations throughout China in 2017.
The Rolls-Royce Art Programme celebrates a shared philosophy between the marque
and the world of Art. Patrons are afforded the luxury of a blank canvas, on which they
may express their own vision, creating motor cars that transcend their primary role as
a means of conveyance, to become works of art themselves. The programme seeks
to go beyond merely sponsoring the medium by adding cultural capital to the world
of contemporary art.
In this new work, Yang takes inspiration from the age-old fable of the ‘foolish man’.
Told in China to almost every school child, the story of the ‘foolish man’ presents a
stirring tale of human will from which to learn the virtue of perseverance. The result
of this reflection is a 46-minute black and-white film, entitled Moving Mountains. In
addition to the national fable, Yang was also inspired by the masterful ink painting
produced in the early 1940s by the painter Xu Beihong. The painting itself appears
only at the very end of the film, as the night rolls back and daylight creeps in, but Yang
adopts it as the form around which to flesh out his interpretation. This remains faithful
to the spirit of endurance captured in the original painting.
The Rolls-Royce Art Programme is committed to fostering creativity and, in particular,
enabling artists to explore new areas of their practice. Artistically, Moving Mountains
moves Yang’s career forward in coming closer to his desire to create a film as a
sketch. Moving Mountains is the focal point of a display which combines sketches,
photographic stills from the production process and a series of photographic collagepaintings
that are, to date, unique to this project.
Yang Fudong joins renowned artists Sudarshan Shetty and José Parlá as a member of
the Rolls-Royce Art Programme in 2016. Rolls-Royce recently celebrated a successful
launch of Sudarshan Shetty’s commission for the Art Programme in November 2016
in Mumbai. José Parlá’s commission for the Art Programme launched during Art Basel
in Miami Beach 2016.
East Imperial
Gin Jubilee 2017
Jubilee festivities kick off with the first ever Bangkok jubilee
running from 31 January to 4 February 2017
Singapore’s Best Gin & Tonic Crowned Asia’s
Best
Newly opened Red Tail bar by Zouk Singapore won Best Gin &
Tonic in the Singapore leg of the 2016 Gin Jubilee. The winning
cocktail was determined by consumer votes via Instagram.
Bartender Lexis Tan beat 35 other bartenders with her Gin &
Tonic ‘Float Like a Butterfly’. With a beautiful violet appearance
and hints of Asian and floral flavors, the winning drink was
made with Bombay Sapphire Gin, East Imperial Burma tonic,
butterfly blue pea flower infused gin, cinnamon syrup, fresh
lemon juice and topped with a layer of citrus foam.
Tan’s rendition was inspired by the classic Gin & Tonic
structure, but made with a more approachable, refreshing and
an Asian twist. Her choice of Bombay Sapphire London Dry Gin
was driven by the distinctive floral flavors of the ten botanicals
used in the gin. The winning cocktail is available at Red Tail at
S$16.
The jubilee was postponed to respect the mourning
period of Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej. This first
year jubilee will kick off with a series of parties, popups,
masterclasses and creative Gin & Tonic renditions
presented by 20 local bars and ten gin brands. Unique to the
Bangkok Jubilee are two gins crafted in the heart of Thailand –
Grandma Jinn’s and Iron Balls, as well as the Australia-based
INK Gin.
www.eastimperial.com
Last year’s regional festivities of the 4th annual East Imperial
Gin Jubilee 2016 in Singapore saw a week of gin-related
activities from masterclasses to pop-ups, gin rambles, gin
tastings and the Gin Lane closing party. The festival kicked off
from Kuala Lumpur in August, and landed on the shores of
Hong Kong in September, and Phnom Penh in October, and
finally brought the grand finale to Singapore in November.
During the jubilee period, 92 top bars from the region
competed for their respective city’s ‘Best Gin & Tonic’ by
creating unique Gin & Tonic renditions. Overall, the 2016 jubilee
was the biggest and best ever: with thousands of social media
posts and tens of thousands of Gin & Tonics enjoyed by the
region’s gin drinkers.
Back to Bangkok
Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants returns to Thailand in 2017
with the fifth edition of the annual awards ceremony
on 21 february 2017 in Bangkok
The 2017 programme will include the #50BestTalks event,
a combination of local food discovery and interactive chef
demonstrations that explores regional food trends and local
Thai cooking techniques. Scheduled for Monday, 20th February,
the one-day curated forum will feature some of Asia’s most
influential culinary leaders, including chefs from Asia’s 50 Best
Restaurants list.
Thailand’s prominence in Asia’s culinary scene continues
to grow. For the last three years, Bangkok restaurants have
claimed the No.1 spot on the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list.
David Thompson’s Nahm took top honours in 2014 while
Gaggan Anand’s eponymous restaurant secured the No.1 spot
in 2015 and again last year. Along with Gaggan and Nahm, the
2016 list also featured the Bangkok-based restaurants Eat Me
(No.23), and Issaya Siamese Club (No.19).
How Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list is compiled
Following the successful move to
Thailand in 2016, the Asia’s 50 Best
Restaurants awards ceremony
will return to Bangkok in 2017.
Now celebrating its fifth year, the event,
sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua
Panna, will take place at the W Hotel in
Bangkok on the evening of Tuesday, 21
February 2017.
Hosted with the support of the Tourism
Authority of Thailand, Asia’s 50 Best
Restaurants will gather the region’s
most renowned chefs, industry VIPs and
international media to announce the
2017 list. Since launching in 2013, Asia’s
50 Best Restaurants has become the
most trusted and credible guide to the
best places to eat around the region. The
2016 list welcomed 10 new entries and
showcased the best dining experiences
in 13 Asian countries, more than ever
before.
The list is created from the votes of the Asia’s 50 Best
Restaurants Academy, an influential group of over 300
leaders in the restaurant industry across Asia, each selected
for their expert opinion of Asia’s restaurant scene. The panel
in each region is made up of food writers and critics, chefs,
restaurateurs and highly regarded ‘gastronomes’. Members
list their choices in order of preference, based on their best
restaurant experiences of the previous 18 months. There is no
pre-determined check-list of criteria, but there are strict voting
rules.
For the 2017 edition, Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants is once again
working with professional services consultancy Deloitte as its
official independent adjudication partner. The adjudication by
Deloitte ensures that the integrity and authenticity of the voting
process and the resulting list of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants are
protected. Compiled by Susanna Ping.
Poised for the city, the collection
embraces a sartorial palette of optic
white, navy, black, carmine red, taupe
and marine blue lifted by pure shades of
blush pink and pale yellow. The rub of
suede or cotton lace contrasts smooth
twill and knife pleat georgette, giving way
to the floating ebb of printed cloque and
undulating ruffled plissé.
Laced and buttoned cotton lingerie
creates an ultra feminine counterpart
to cargo trousers with patch pockets
or a distinct tapered sarouel shape, as
spacious romper and pinafore shapes are
belted with an o-ring sash. Shorts and
v-neck sweaters are finished with shirting
cuffs or a cotton drawstring hem, whilst
square neck envelope tops are knotted in
bows at the shoulder or wrist. Topstitch
borders and ‘jour échelle’ ladder trims
adorn the tiers of sheer evening blouses
and flounced slipdresses, before a
passage of ruched floral print ensembles
cascade from the shoulders in a closing
gesture of nonchalant ease.
ROGER VIVIER
Armed with Softness
In an assured play of contrasts, Roger Vivier introduces a defiantly feminine collection. The luxurious
twists of objects and mixes of genre, generate paradoxes to depict an electrifying woman.
With a confident allure, she wears martial style accessories, like the new Viv’ bag worn “à la hussard”
or the new Chunky Trompette 10cm heel pump, with its stronger shape and solid attitude.
Feminine, she subscribes to frills, floral prints, and sixties designs.
Two opposite worlds collide to
create a brand new, über-elegant
woman who Roger Vivier’s
Creative Director Bruno Frisoni
sums up in a few words: “She is
armed with softness.”
For day – The collection escapes classic feminine codes. Lines sculpt the luxurious designs,
and the contrasting fabrics create this nervy, sharp style that changes everything. Leather and
satin frills, black and white XXL houndstooth print, floral chiné leather, the iconic classic buckle
becomes a ring on sixties ankle boots, mini-rivets, draped and zipped leather perched on a
vertiginous heel. Even the Prismick is transformed to become Prismick Patch, a mix of powerful
prints. The Pilgrim bag too is reimagined in a soft leather, hunting-style saddlebag.
For evening - Stretch black, low heel, thigh- high sequined boots, ankle Chunky Trompette 10cm
heel booties with XXL multicolour houndstooth pattern in sequins, the classic buckle adorned
with crystal flowers, harness-style sandals, chiné silks. These accessories convey richness and
extravagance. A minaudière box in silk, python or croco is adorned with a mini buckle clutch,
while a soft satin clutch displays the same classic signatures in a floral crystal motif.
WELLNESSSleep
Sleeping
woes
When it comes to sleep, a fine balance is needed
By Wong Yen San
Most of us get too little sleep. Juggling work
demands, job stress, and family can all take a toll on
the amount and quality of our sleep. We may feel
we need more of it but the amount of sleep actually
depends on many factors such as your age, job, lifestyle, and
health in general. Our sleep varies on the stage of life we are at.
Growing adolescents sleep much longer than working adults
and the elderly for example.
Our sleep also depends on our health. We may feel we need
more sleep and rest when we are recuperating from a sickness.
People who are disposed to depression have also shown that
they need more bed hours. Despite these factors, in general,
a person needs 7 to 9 hours of bedtime every day. This is the
requirement for one to function healthily and normally.
We already know that too few hours of sleep can pose health
problems. The effects of insufficient sleep are rather immediate
and painful. Dozing off during meetings is commonplace.
Drinking 4 to 5 cups of coffee a day in order to stay awake
during a work day is not very nice smelling on the breath and
palate. There are longer term implications too that can do
more damage to health such as heart diseases. But what about
sleeping too much? Is it harmful too?
Studies have shown that people who suddenly up their
bedtime hours face an increased risk of heart disease, stroke,
and even death. This is because increasing the number of
hours in bed could mean a deterioration of health; hence,
the sudden need to rest more. But that does not mean that
everyone who sleeps more than 9 hours have a health
problem. The person could be young and healthy for that
matter. However if you are loving your bed a little too much
and if you’re sleeping more than the 9 hours – a sudden jump
from your usual bed routine – you could be facing some issues
that are best checked and verified by a doctor.
Too little or too much sleep can indeed be damaging to health.
Let’s look at how so:
Increased risk of obesity
Studies have shown that sleeping too little or too much can
both lead to obesity. A lack of sleep is reported to stimulate
appetite, causing an uptake for food. You might find yourself
heaping on larger food portions. In addition, insufficient sleep
can also increase one’s craving for sugary, salty, and highcarbohydrate
foods – foods that could pack on the pounds.
When we are groggy and tired, we pay less attention to what
we eat. But most importantly, we have less energy to be alert
and disciplined to food choices. This would result in us dishing
more unhealthy and unwholesome foods onto our plate
unknowingly.
WELLNESSSleep
Save your heart
If too little sleep is bad for your heart, should we aim to sleep
more? No. Studies have shown that too little sleep – less than
7 hours and too much sleep – 9 hours and more – have been
shown to cause cardiovascular health problems in participants.
Sleeping too few hours for an extended period of time will
up the chance of you getting a stroke or other cardiovascular
diseases. The extended period of time could be anywhere
between months to years. The only way to save your heart,
among other health habits you adopt, is to moderate your shut
eye time.
A depressed mind
A lack of sleep can cause depression and anxiety and these
can cause big and lasting impacts on your life. When you have
depression from lack of sleep, you’re bringing your sleeping
woes to the day time. Your depression can affect your work,
relationships, and lifestyle. Research has also pointed out that
depressed people also sleep more hours than average, a habit
that could worsen their depression.
Diabetes
Another medical problem from under-and-over sleeping is
diabetes. Studies have shown that people who averaged more
than 9 hours or less than 5 hours a night are prone to this
condition.
Headaches & drowsiness
Have you ever woken up because of a headache from sleeping
too much over the weekend? This is the effect oversleeping
has on neurotransmitters in the brain, WebMD says. Having too
little sleep the night before can also cause pounding headaches
when you wake up.
The risks of insufficient sleep are significant if you operate
machinery or drive. Drowsiness is a common result and
this poses a weightier risk for those needing to work with
dangerous machines or equipment in labs and factories
for example. Driving to a meeting when you’re about to fall
asleep on the road is a high safety hazard. You can walk the
drowsiness off but the risks remain.
Slow cognitive ability
Your mind reacts slower to situations. This is an after effect of
insufficient sleep. You are unable to process things quickly. A
lack of sleep can impair your cognitive capability. Needless to
say, this is bad for work performance.
Appearance takes a toll
If you have saucer-like eye bags, no amount of makeup can
help. Prolonged lack of sleep can create tired-looking puffy
eyes, sallow skin, and prominent lines on the face. It will also
hasten ageing as collagen – the gel that holds it together –
breaks down.
Early death
A lack of sleep can cause your health to nose dive, increasing
the risks of death particularly from cardiovascular diseases.
Similarly, there is a link of oversleeping to high incidence of
death. Either way, it’s bad.
Whether you are facing any sleeping problems, ensuring
a healthy dose of average 7 to 9 hours a day will help in
maintaining good health. To do so, get your sleep environment
conducive enough. Ban electronic equipment before night time.
Avoid heavy meals and alcohol close to bedtime and try to
wake and sleep the same time every day.
Teething Problem
Stress can take a toll on your teeth. BY Rael Yip
Dr. Meenakshi Malhi (right) in consultation with a patient.
On one of my visits to the dentist a year ago, I was told
that apparently I am grinding my teeth. That was the
first time I’ve heard of it. On a subsequent visit to a
different dentist, I had the same comment again; there
are signs I am a grinder.
I finally decided to do something about it on my subsequent
visit to the dentist. Dr. Meenakshi Malhi, at T32 Dental Centre
at Financial District, examined my mouth and showed me my
teeth on a LED Screen.
“Your front teeth shows signs of wear, but your back teeth looks
fine. They have uneven contours and are not flat like your front
teeth,” Dr. Meena told me. “Are you under a lot of stress?”
My work is not overly
stressful at the moment, but
a year or so back I did face
some personal and work
issues which might have
added some pressure. Dr.
Meena explained that stress
and lack of good sleep
are two main causes that
lead people to grind their
teeth, a condition known as
bruxism, and that can just
be the tip of the iceberg.
She has patients who grind
their teeth at night and
clench them during the
day. This not only leads to
flattening and chipping of
the teeth, grinders can also
suffer from headaches, jaw
and tooth aches.
My custom night guard.
The grinders that Dr. Meena sees in her practice are
predominantly single, professional women in high pressured
jobs. Patients can undergo more detailed tests such as a sleep
study or see a specialist in sleep medicine to find out exactly
what is causing their grinding and treat the root cause.
The pressure individuals place on themselves while sleeping can
be intense. “Teeth grinding is known to generate forces over 30
kg, that’s at least twice more pressure than when you chew on
hard food like a carrot, which produces a bite force of between 7
to 15 kg,” Dr Meena shared. Regular grinding will accelerate the
wearing down of our teeth.
Remediation includes reducing stress, drinking enough water,
getting adequate sleep, relaxing the face and jaw during the day
and avoiding alcohol and caffeine. The most common dental
solution is a custom night guard constructed by a dentist, who
will measure your mouth and teeth and build one based on
these specifications.
My custom night guard was ready three weeks later after my
session with Dr. Meena. The guard fits snugly onto my upper
row of teeth and I am advised to wear it every night while
asleep. It took me three weeks before it felt more or less normal
but if it protects my teeth, then I’m game. At the same time, this
set off some soul-searching. I needed to relax more and ease off
my self-flagellation of getting less than eight hours of sleep – I
regularly live on barely six on weekdays. My teeth is a good
wake-up call.
Saving your
we can do to keep our
brain healthy
By Wong Yen San
mindWhat
them to grow and expand. Activities like a new
language, instrument, or hobbies like sewing
and mah-jong can all help to keep your mind
active and engaged.
Social bonding
Humans are born to interact; we often find our
moods lifted after talking to a close friend or
a night out with our girlfriends for example.
When we closet ourselves up, we cut off this
opportunity to bond with others. Having a pet
also helps to alleviate your worries and keeps
your energy level up. It’s essential to connect
with others; go for outings with family and
friends or sign up to volunteer at the charity.
That would cause the individual to divert
attention from oneself to others instead.
Without physical health, you may be mobility
inconvenienced; but without mental health,
your world just disintegrates to nothingness. It’s
that scary. And it’s something that is very real
for you and me as the world ageing population increases
and as lifespan increases. With the advancement of medical
technology and healthcare, we may stretch our lifespan but
can we also ensure that it’s free of diseases and problems?
According to World Health Organisation, the world population
that is suffering from dementia counts at 35.6 million. And this
number will set to double by 2030 and more than triple by
2050. A frightening number and a scary thought indeed.
Dementia is a condition to describe the group of illnesses
causing impairment to memory, language, and thinking.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common, best-known brain
disorder of dementia. In Alzheimer’s, a person’s brain cells start
to deteriorate, resulting in the brain shrinking. With dementia, a
person cannot perform simple functions in daily life and need
to be taken care of by a caregiver. It is a condition that affects
the elderly mostly over 65 years old and the risk increases as
the age goes up. Dementia is not a common result of ageing
and its causes are not understood although research has
shown that physical and mental activity as well as other lifestyle
factors can contribute to better brain health and; thus may help
to delay the disease from occurring in the latter years. In fact,
there is research that shows that what we did as early as our
adolescent years might contribute to the risks of dementia later
in life. The risks in certain individuals also tend to increase with
these factors:
Genetic make-up
Reports have shown that there is a slight risk of dementia being
a genetic risk to younger generations. However, it depends on
the cause of the dementia according to reports.
Age
Many would hope to believe that age is only a number; it may
be true for a rare few outstanding individuals who despite their
age are doing impressive feats like running a marathon for
example but the fact is that our body is weakening as time goes
by. The incidence of Alzheimer’s disease does increase with
age especially after 65 and more so after 70 and 80 years old.
Poor cardiovascular health
High blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity are reported
to increase the risks of dementia in some individuals. Lifestyle
choices like smoking and alcohol drinking have also found to
contribute to the risks of getting dementia later in life. All these
only suggest that healthy living that encompasses a healthy diet
and exercise is crucial to fighting off diseases like dementia.
Many previous research have already demonstrated that good
mental and physical health is essential to ward off dementia.
We look at some of these efforts:
Work your brain
Most of us love routines; we may take the same route to
work every day, walk the same path to the supermarket,
rationalise problems the way we always did at work, and cook
the dishes we know by heart every other day. Of course not
everyone is like that; for those who are, we may seem a bore
but sameness is comforting and well safe. But research has
shown that sameness may not be that safe for our brain after
all. We need to exercise our brain and challenge it in new
ways; hence we read that learning a new language or picking
up a new skill can help your brain to grow and it’s actually
true. The more challenging the activity you are engaged in,
the more stimulated and strengthened the brain cells, causing
Physical exercise
A person who exercises throughout his or her
life can ward off many infections and diseases
later, according to research. And you may find it
to be true for those who exercise regularly tend
to be generally healthier experiencing fewer
health issues. Although the recommended
exercise dosage is 150 minutes of moderate
intensive exercise a week, walking to the
supermarket and tending to your plants at the
back yard also add up to the number.
Feed your brain
What is good for your heart is also good for
your brain. If you feed yourself fatty snacks
for a long time, your chances of developing
cardiovascular diseases and hence dementia
also increases. Reduce saturated fats by going
for lean meat like fish and chicken and low
fat dairy. Have ample servings of vegetables
and fruits for vitamins and antioxidants every
day and keep alcohol intake to the required
minimum – not more than 2 glasses for men
and 1 glass for women daily. Get omega 3 fatty
acids in your diet as with enough complex
vitamin B for your eye and brain health.
Thinking positive
The way you see your glass – whether it’s half
full or half empty – not only gives away what
your personality is, but it may also determines
how you fare in terms of your brain health over
time. Constantly worrying and feeling negative
over things or events may cause depression
especially in older folks and hasten dementia
more quickly. By learning to let go of things can
only one experiences joy that makes one’s life
more fulfilling and enduring to come.
Flush out bacteria with water
Urinary tract trouble
These infections are painful and inhibiting to our lifestyle
By Wong Yen San
Make sure you drink enough water during the day to flush out
the bacteria from the walls of your urethra. The more water you
drink, the likelihood of the bacteria staying in your system is
reduced. This would also mean that when you feel the need to
go to the bathroom, do not wait. Waiting will cause the bacteria
in your urine to accumulate, upping the chances of getting an
infection. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you cannot hold
up once in a while, but you know the time you should excuse
yourself.
Always wipe backwards
If you’re a woman, chances are you’ve got it at least once in your
life. If you’ve got it once and that’s it, you’re lucky, because some
of us get recurrent infections throughout our lives. I’m talking
about urinary tract infection, an affliction that is painful and can
cause major disruption to our daily living if it’s not cured. Common
symptoms include frequent urination – every few minutes, pain
when urination, and in more serious cases, blood in your urine.
According to WebMD, urinary tract infections are basically bladder
infections and usually happen when germs from the large intestine
and stools get into the urethra tube, the conduit that transports
urine from the bladder to outside the body. When the bacteria are
not eradicated at this point, they can flow up the kidney causing a
kidney infection; that is when you see blood in urine. And this is
potentially damaging to the kidney when action is not taken to ease
the infection.
Because women have shorter urethras than men, bacteria are
allowed to travel much easily to the bladder, causing them to be
more prone to urinary tract infections. This could be a likely reason
for the frequency of infections seen in women than men. The
symptoms of a urinary tract infection vary. Most people experience
a burning sensation when urination and when they do urinate, only
small amounts come out. The burning sensation will start mildly
and progress to be excruciating when treatment is not given over
a short time of few hours. Some others develop a fever and chill
whereas other symptoms reported include nausea and vomiting.
When you feel the onslaught of a urinary tract infection, you should
visit the doctor immediately. You’d usually be prescribed a dose of
antibiotics and effervescent drink that curbs the burning sensation
during urination. Sexually active women are more prone to getting
a urinary tract infection than those who are not; perhaps due to
the ease of bacteria getting into the bladder during intercourse.
Also, pregnant women are also at risk; their growing uterus puts
pressure on the bladder, resulting in their inability to completely
empty their bladder from urine, which when stagnant over time
may cause infections, according to medical reports. Regardless
of any pre-existing condition you may have, when you’ve
got it once, you wouldn’t want to get it again. We
look at some daily living and dietary habits to
keep this infection at bay.
After using the bathroom, always wipe backwards. This would
reduce the chance of the bacteria getting into the urethra.
Similarly, during shower, clean from front to back. And also,
use the bathroom immediately after sexual intercourse to
flush out the bacteria that are lining your urethra walls, and
remember to wipe from front to back.
Up the cranberries
Cranberries are known among those afflicted with urinary tract
infections to be particularly effective in keeping the infections
at bay. WebMD reports say that there are substances within
cranberries that can prevent bacteria from sticking to the
urinary tract walls; thereby preventing the occurrence of a
urinary tract infection. Although different ideas emerge as
to how exactly these prove to be effective, cranberries have
shown to be helpful in countering against future infections.
Cranberry juice is better drank without the sweeten version;
alternatively take cranberry supplements as part of your daily
dietary regimen.
Get probiotics
Yogurt contains a variety of bacteria such as Lactobacillus
acidophilus that helps to restore the good bacteria in our
body’s digestive tract and vagina, according to WebMD. As
such, eating yogurt can help to prevent yeast and bacterial
infections such as those of urinary tract infections. However,
try to consume yogurts that are original with low or no sugar to
prevent high sugar content in your body especially if you’d be
eating it every day. Or take a probiotic supplement to maintain
your immune health.
Eat healthy
Ensure a balanced healthy diet comprising whole foods
rather than refined ones. Antioxidant-rich foods like fruits and
vegetables and high-fibre foods keep your immune system
strong and prevent the incidence of infections. Take a multivitamin
if you’re unable to get regular meals.
Wear breathable innerwear
Cotton is the best bet against exacerbating the infection
because the material is highly porous, allowing air to circulate
better. Spandex and polyester however are moisture-retaining
and although they might give better shape, they are less
porous and potential grounds for bacteria to grow. The type of
underwear also plays a part; the idea is you must have room to
move after wearing it (or feel comfortable at least). This means
shapewear like girdles is out and so are tight thongs; these are
not necessarily helpful to your condition particularly when you
are having symptoms.
Away with harsh cleaners
Body cleansers or shower creams with antibacterial function
may not be necessary when it comes to washing your intimate
region. Our nether region is supposed to be self-cleaning so
there is no need to douche it or to use purposeful cleansers
like feminine soaps and wipes. Douching might change the ph
balance, potentially causing a bacterial infection. Douche we
can do without but wash we must despite the claims of our
nether region’s wonderful self-cleaning feature. But gently.
An alternative thus is to wash mildly with natural or organic
products as they comprise no chemicals to cause any adverse
effect in our system.
Archipelago
Adventure
The waters off Helsinki consists of around
330 islands, providing a getaway from the
hustle and bustle of the city
by Susanna Ping
Pihlajasaari is the most popular island among Helsinkians
to spend a sunny summer’s day. The island is famous
for its picturesque sandy beaches, as well as its rocks
on the other side of the island, both of which offer great
spots for sunbathers and swimmers. The island is perfect for
day-long picnics but, if you want a day off from the kitchen,
then you can enjoy the delicacies of the restaurant Pihlajasaari.
Kaunissaari is situated on the crest of the high seas and
provides amazing views. In fact, the island is one of the
farthest islands from the city, with the ferry trip lasting around
40 minutes. The island is known for its long beaches and
rich fishing grounds. The diversity of flora and fauna is also
impressive and many campers head to the island to enjoy
them.
Vartiosaari’s history is very intriguing. It is believed that the
island was used as a guard ground to warn locals of imminent
attacks during the Viking Age. A warning fire was lit on a rocky
hill that soars to 32 meters above sea level. A thousand years
later, the island has become a popular site among Helsinki’s
bourgeoisie, who built villas there. Nowadays, the opulent
berry and mushroom crops attract visitors during the summer
and autumn months. The winter creates a superb setting for
skiers and skaters.
Seurasaari is one of the few islands you can reach by foot. One
of its exceptional features is its open-air museum in which the
traditional Finnish way of life is celebrated. The houses, manors
and outbuildings have all been relocated from around Finland.
There are currently 87 separate buildings that offer a glimpse
into Finnish countryside life from the 18th to the 20th century.
Sail Away
You might have heard that Finland is ‘the land of a thousand
lakes’*, but did you know that Finland also has a coastline
strewn with tens of thousands of islands? Finland’s Baltic coast
is a perfect travel destination for anyone looking for a sailing
experience with a difference.
The Finnish coastline stretches from the eastern Gulf of Finland
to the western edges of the Åland islands and then north to the
far end of the Gulf of Botnia. The shortest route to cover the
whole coast is a mere 660 nautical miles. But what miles those
are!
Exciting Sea Scapes
Time spent on the water is, of course, what you like most about
sailing, and so here you are in for a treat. No two minutes
will be the same – in the Finnish sea waters you are actively
sailing all the time: get a thrill out of trimming the sails as the
wind and your course constantly change and practice your
navigational skills along a total of over 10,000 km of marked
channels as you brush past some of the 80,000 islands! And
never even think about putting on the autopilot because taking
the helm is so much fun.
TravelFinland
If you are not preoccupied with the sailing, simply sit back
and enjoy the endless variations of the scenery. Close to the
mainland lush green forests and colourful holiday homes line
your route. Further out to sea, you can spot the traditional red
and yellow wooden houses of fisherman and farmer villages,
nestling in the shelter between the smooth cliffs and patches of
forest.
Furthest out, towards the Baltic, the islands become mere
windblown, barren cliffs, homes to wildlife such as birds and
seals. And don’t forget to look up to spot the most majestic of
the animals in the archipelago, the white-tailed sea eagle, with
wings like barn doors, that slowly circles overhead looking for
prey.
Around the Archipelago
One of the 240 marinas and guest harbours along the coast and
on the Åland islands will be waiting for you, regardless of how
you plan your day.
Some of the marinas are located on islands that have been
inhabited for centuries by people living off the sea and the
rugged land. If you stay overnight, don’t miss the chance
to stroll through the nearest village and get a feeling for the
courage and determination needed to live out in archipelago.
Other marinas are very modern and built with the discerning
customer in mind. The service level of all marinas is high: free
water, and power and clean washing facilities, with a sauna are
standard, naturally. Most are very affordable – a night in marina
is typically around 20 € per boat, including services.
Once the boat is secured and you’ve recovered your land
legs, you can enjoy dinner on your boat in the warm and light
summer night, or give the cook a day off and head to a nearby
restaurant. Afterwards you can just stroll along the shore and
drop in for a coffee or a drink in a café or bar.
Regardless of whether you are a hard-core sailor – looking for
challenges out on the water – or an explorer of new places,
Finland can offer you an unforgettable sailing experience.
Archipelago Community in Högsåra
Thanks to its central location in the Hiittinen archipelago,
Högsåra has been known for its community of maritime
pilots throughout its history. Entire families of pilots lived
on the island, as skills were passed on from father to son.
Relax and Unwind
Högsåra is conveniently accessible by a ferry that also
allows cars and bicycles, and the 20-minute ride gives one
an immediate taste of the relaxed pace of life on the island.
Visitors can continue by foot or bicycle from the harbour,
and enjoy the understated charm of the Högsåra village.
Cows and sheep saunter on the fields and lie resting on
hot days. As cyclists breeze past, the animals follow the
resulting dust clouds with their eyes.
The island’s number one meeting spot and the
archipelago’s most famous cafe is the charming Farmors
Cafe (”grandmother’s cafe” in Swedish). The warm scent
of its baked goods wafts into the surroundings, tempting
cyclists as they pass by.
the Lunar New Year with Chao Dao and Gong Fu Tea Ceremonies
Start the Lunar New Year stress free with Chao Dao or literally:
the way of tea.
Tea Master and Zen monk, Wu De will lead a number of tea
ceremonies at COMO Shambhala Estate – COMO Hotels and
Resorts’ flagship wellness retreat in Bali. What a wonderful
way to welcome in the Lunar New Year from 23 January to 1
February 2017.
During Wu De’s travels through India, Burma, Japan and
Thailand, he learnt to prepare tea as fuel for intensive
meditation. He then began studying Chinese Gong Fu (the art
of doing something well) tea ceremonies under Master Lin Ping
Xiang, after being ordained as a minister of Soto Zen. Gong
Fu teaches us that the ultimate tea experience is to be found
through the application of time, dedication and effort.
COMO Shambhala Estate’s Chao Dao and Gong Fu Tea
Ceremonies include a Chao Dao Tea Ceremony group session
on 28 January (the night of the Lunar New Year), and daily
Kedara Water Gathering and Purification rituals. Wu De will
also provide private Gong Fu Tea Ceremonies for those of
you seeking to immerse themselves deeper into this ancient
practice.
Wu De will choose a special wild or organic living tea for every
guest, based on his tea selecting intuition refined through years
of intense study. For one guest he may choose a beautifully
roasted oolong; for another guest, he may recommend an aged
Puerh or a radiantly fresh green tea. After this sacred ceremony,
Wu De will give a talk on the relationship between Zen and tea,
explaining how guests can incorporate the spirit of tea into their
daily lives.
Tea has been used medicinally for millennia to calm the heart,
brighten the spirit, circulate energy and harmonise the body.
Wu De’s ceremonies will create a space for anybody wanting to
experience a deeper sense of clarity through tea drinking.
Wu De will be available for a number of group or private
sessions from 23 January to 1 February 2017. These include:
Cha Dao Tea Ceremony Group Session 90 minutes/ IDR
600,000
Wu De will use his intuition to select a tea appropriate for the
day of the tea session. He will serve guests in silence, allowing
everyone to experience a deep inner peace. After serving
and drinking the tea, he will give a short talk. By the end,
participants will have sharpened their senses to life around
them and experienced the alchemy and magic of Cha Dao tea
in the presence of a man who has dedicated his life to the leaf.
Gong Fu Tea Ceremony Private Session 90 minutes/ IDR
4,455,000
In this private workshop Wu De will share the art of the Gong Fu
tea ceremony, guiding his guests through every step of brewing
Gong Fu tea gracefully. This is a meditative and instructive
experience, for guests wanting to deepen their knowledge of
tea preparation.
Kedara Water Gathering and Purification 60 minutes/
IDR 400,000
Recognised as one of Bali’s eight holy water sources, COMO
Shambhala Estate’s spring is used regularly by local villagers
who make pilgrimages to the spring to collect water for their
ceremonies. Each day Wu De collects the water here to be
used in his tea ceremonies. Having collected the water, it is
brought to the Estate’s temple, Padma Sana, where a Balinese
blessing ceremony takes place and prayers are performed by
the Begawan village priest.
All prices are in Indonesian Rupiah and subject to 21 per cent
government tax and service charge.
COMO Shambhala Estate is a residential health retreat with
luxury villa-style accommodation near Ubud, Bali. This ‘retreat
for change’ is a place to relax and improve wellbeing. State-ofthe-art
wellness facilities include a vitality pool, treatment areas
both indoors and outdoors near to the Ayung River, a rock
climbing wall, two gyms, Pilates studio and two yoga venues
(pavilion and bale). The Estate’s resident experts, who all
INSPIRES AT
SCIENCE MUSEUM’S
NEW GALLERY
“When I was growing
up in Iraq, math was an
everyday part of life.”
— The Late Dame Zaha Hadid
Mathematics: The Winton Gallery is
the first permanent public museum
exhibition designed by Zaha Hadid
Architects anywhere in the world
Sourced by Carol Kraal
Architectural & Design Consultant Sara Graav
If you like mathematics this is a heavenly oasis. If you hate
mathematics you will be inspired.
Nestling in South Kensington in London, the new gallery in
the Science Museum engages with more than 100 treasures
from the world-class science, technology, engineering and
mathematics collections that have been selected to tell
powerful stories about how mathematics has shaped, and been
shaped by, some of our most fundamental human concerns
– from trade and travel to war, peace, life, death, form and
beauty.
You can also perceive the gallery’s spatial design and form
interlacing with the late Dame Zaha Hadid’s love for geometry
and mathematics, and their roles in her life as architect and
designer.
Looming at the centre of the gallery is the Handley Page
‘Gugnunc’ aeroplane, built in 1929 for a competition to
construct safe aircraft. Ground-breaking aerodynamic research
influenced the wing design of this experimental aeroplane,
helping to shift public opinion about the safety of flying and to
secure the future of the aviation industry.
Inspired by the Handley Page aircraft, Zaha Hadid Architects’
enlightening design of the gallery is driven by equations of
airflow used in the aviation industry. The layout and lines
represent the air that would have flowed around this historic
aircraft in flight, from the positioning of the showcases and
benches to the three-dimensional curved surfaces of the central
pod structure.
Mathematics: The Winton Gallery is the first permanent public museum exhibition designed
by Zaha Hadid Architects anywhere in the world. The gallery is also the first of Zaha Hadid
Architects’ projects to open in the UK since Dame Zaha Hadid’s sudden death in March 2016.
The late Dame Zaha first became interested in geometry while studying mathematics at
university. Mathematics and geometry have a strong connection with architecture and she
continued to examine these relationships throughout each of her projects; with mathematics
always central to her work.
As Dame Zaha said, “When I was growing up in Iraq, math was an everyday part of life. We
would play with math problems just as we would play with pens and paper to draw – math was
like sketching.”
From a beautiful 17th century Islamic astrolabe that uses ancient mathematical techniques to
map the night sky, to an early example of the famous Enigma machine, designed to resist even
the most advanced mathematical techniques for code breaking during the Second World War,
each historic object within the gallery has an important story to tell.
Some instruments and objects within the gallery clearly reference their mathematical origin.
Others may surprise you and appear rooted in other disciplines, from classical architecture to
furniture design.
Architecture& Design Design Norway Norway
North Stars
Their creative work may be hard to find in this part of
the world but Norway’s designers are shining bright
Architectural & Design Consultant from Norway Sara Graav
Writer Carol Kraal
Hopperstad Stave Church
The sheer elusiveness of Norwegian design in Singapore and
Asia Pacific set me on a quest to find out more.
I was enraptured by the stunning Norwegian landscapes in
a travel feature, and went hunting for items for my home.
My living space is not Scandinavian Style but I appreciate its
minimalist and simple lines, the tranquil colours, and the use of
natural materials and abundant light. But what I was specifically
interested in was Norwegian Style.
I spent days looking. I found lots of Swedish and Danish. I
found things bunched under Nordic and Scandinavian. Where
was Norwegian?
Curator of 100% Norway, Max Fraser, offered his views. The
exhibition is exclusive to Norwegian designers and their
handicraft, and was well received when it was held in the UK
recently.
“Scandinavian design tends to get lumped together, bringing
with it a whole host of stereotypes about minimalist forms and
blonde wood. But Norwegian designers, like their neighbours,
are keen to evolve this aesthetic and are embracing more
elements of humour and colour as well as material diversity
into their repertoire. As to why Norwegian design is rare in
Singapore and the Asia Pacific, I suspect it’s the shipping
and taxes that make it prohibitively expensive to import,
unfortunately.”
One solution is to buy Norwegian design online. A better
solution is to go to Norway and discover first hand its wealth
of design creativity in architecture, art and handicraft. Many
of these creations are inspired by the surrounding nature and
landscape, and the tradition of pioneering designers. They have
simple, honest lines, outstanding workmanship and materials;
and a sense of colour that is sometimes light and sometimes
bright with irony and humour.
A GLIMPSE OF NORWEGIAN
CREATIVE WONDERS
Architects and their buildings
Sykkelhtoell
Various Architects — No matter how small the project, this
Oslo-based Architecture firm aims to contribute to the local
environment. Explains partner Alexander Heien Berg: “In
addition to providing safe parking for 400 bicycles, the design
of Sykkelhtoell (Bicycle hotel) gives back to the city the area it
takes away by providing a public green rooftop.” The whole
building glows at night, creating a unique spot for anyone
to enjoy a moment amongst the green roof overlooking the
city´s skyline. As in many Norwegian designs, its minimalist
architectural style manages to convey a generous amount of
narrative.
Community Church Knarvik
Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter (RRA) — Independent Oslobased
architectural firm RRA has earned a reputation for
creating bold, simple architecture with a strong connection
to the Scandinavian context. The stunning church contrasts
with its dramatic spire yet at the same time quietly harmonises
with its landscape. Nestling in Hordaland, one of the wettest
regions in Europe, the church’s meticulous timber surfaces
of heartwood pine utilises a tradition in sustainable local
architecture that goes back to the vikings, who used the resin to
protect their buildings from the harsh elements. Its minimalist
design is inspired by the stave churches built during medieval
times, and today represents one of Norway’s most important
contributions to international architecture. Community
Church Knarvik was recently awarded GOLD in Institutional
Architecture by The American Architecture Prize 2016.
a site that perches over the
Dovrefjell mountains, which
are mythical and sacred in
locals’ hearts. Within the
the beautiful scenery, lies an
organic wooden core shaped
like rock or ice that has been
eroded by the forces of wind
design perspective of strength
create products that reflect the modesty and humour of the
Norwegian temperament. The Folded set of metal trays
and boxes is both desktop organiser and decorative display,
its attractive colours inspired by the bold but harmonious
palettes employed by Nora Gulbrandsen, Norway’s first
industrial designer. Iben is an adaptable bench/table and
stool in birch that echoes the clean-lined solidity of modular
furniture prioneer Torbjørn Afdal’s designs.
Anderssen & Voll
Torbjørn Anderssen and
their Oslo studio since 2009,
creating textiles, tableware,
lighting, furniture and
electronics for some of the
biggest brands in Europe. PI
is a series of tables that offer
a contemporary spin on the
use of laminated wood – a
key feature of midcentury
Norwegian furniture pieces
such as Sigurd Ressell’s
Falcon Chair. Åklé blanket
design. IDA is a prototype
of a sustainable steel-framed
dining chair that can be easily
reupholstered and repainted,
thus extending its lifespan over
many years. The welded oval
the frame are a response to the
way bent and laminated wood
is used in traditional Norwegian
furniture making.
Harmon – a pendant lamp in glass, wood
and brass containing a sculpture based on the
pendular drawings of Norwegian artist Hans
produces an ever-changing series of organic
Homesdecor
Traditional decor ideas
1. Paste elaborate paper cutouts onto the window depicting
scenes of rural life or Chinese mythology. These are
traditionally put up on south and north facing windows.
2. Display Chinese New Year paintings and artwork. Opt for
images of health and bounty or fruits and animals.
3. One of the most common decorations during Chinese New
Year are red paper lanterns.
4. Cushion covers and oriental red baskets also make lovely
decorative pieces. Embellish them with Chinese characters
to enhance the festive theme.
5. Chinese calligraphy printed on red paper will certainly
impress even your most discerning guests.
Auspicious
Ornamentations
Understand traditional symbols so you can decorate your abode to usher in
good luck. By Marie Lee
This year, like every Chinese New Year, millions of people
worldwide will celebrate the arrival of one of the most
important festivals. Fifteen days are spent capturing the
vibrancy of this fabulous season, which marks the end
of winter and the beginning of spring.
Besides feasting, decorating one’s home is another vital part of
the Chinese Spring Festival. Decorative aspects mainly centre
around fortune gods, lions, dragons, fishes, lanterns and the
new year’s zodiac sign.
Decorating the home for The Lunar New Year does not only
serve as eye candy; according to Chinese belief, it holds deep
symbolism. But what exactly do these symbols mean, and how
do you add traditional touches to your ornamentations?
Here are some ways you can joyfully herald in the year of the
fire monkey when you are dolling up your home this Chinese
New Year:
Chinese characters
Displaying Chinese characters in the home is one popular way
to usher in good luck.
Fù means fortune, chūn translates to spring and the word for
double happiness is shuāngxǐ.
You’ll often see Chinese households with the word (fù) hung
upside down, and there’s an explanation for this. The mandarin
and Cantonese words for upside down sounds like the word to
arrive in Chinese, so when (fù) is hung upside down it means
fortune has arrived.
There are infinite possibilities to decorate with Chinese
characters throughout your home. You are only limited by your
own imagination.
The door and walls
Flowers and plants
Flowers and plants beautify any home but more importantly,
they play a significant role during the Lunar New Year. Place
them in any area of your home to add instant cheer.
• Lotuses symbolise rebirth and new growth.
• Peach blossoms symbolise luck.
• Mandarin and orange trees, and the kumquat and narcissus
symbolise prosperity.
• Chrysanthemums symbolise longevity.
• The bamboo plant is considered a magnet for positive Chi
energy.
• Cherry and plum blossoms represent the promise of spring
and a renewal of life.
• Peonies represent prosperity and peace.
• Orchids symbolise nobility.
• Pussy willows signify new beginnings and wealth.
• Sunflowers are synonymous with luck and goodwill.
• The Azalea is considered auspicious because of its bright
red hues and also symbolises growth.
• Waterlilies are associated with growth.
Food and numbers
The Chinese believe that you can even incorporate food into
your decoration to usher in good luck.
One way to do this is to place mandarin oranges in bowls
throughout the house. Mandarins with their leaves still intact
are the fruits of happiness for the New Year.
The number “8” also symbolises good luck and wealth because
the Chinese character for eight rhymes with fortune or wealth.
Place platters of oranges and tangerines and a candy tray with
eight varieties of dried sweet.
Colours
Colours feature extensively in Chinese New Year decorations.
Red and gold are auspicious colours to the Chinese. Red
symbolises happiness and vitality of life, while gold represents
wealth and prosperity.
It’s really simple to incorporate these colours into your décor.
All you have to do is place gold ingots and red hong bao
packets around the house. Remember that it is considered bad
luck to have empty packs, so fill them with some money.
The home entrance is the first area guests see when they visit a
home. You can use similar ideas to decorate the door and walls.
A “door god” image on the door is believed to fight off evil
spirits and bless your house.
Many people pen happy wishes written on auspicious red
paper and display these poetic couplets.
Adorn you walls with paper fire crackers or hang them outside
the door entrance. Why firecrackers? It is believed that lighting
fire crackers scares evil spirits away.
Lucky Red
Campari is made by infusing bitter herbs, aromatic plants and fruit in alcohol
and water. Make a few exciting red cocktails for Chinese New Year
By Susanna Ping
A
unique recipe has characterised
this Italian spirit for 150 years.
The inimitable Campari recipe,
used as the basis of many
cocktails served worldwide, has been
kept the same since its inception and
remains a closely guarded secret.
The guarded recipe
Bitter Uso Olanda, as Campari was
initially called, was the result of Gaspare
Campar’s experiments in concocting
new beverages. It is still produced today
with the same ingredients and following
the confidential recipe which remains a
secret known only to the very few people
in charge of the production process.
Campari is the result of the infusion of
herbs, aromatic plants and fruit in alcohol
and water; these last two being the
recipe’s only known ingredients.
Many have guessed the number of
ingredients: some say there are 20 or
60, but others list the ingredients at 80.
Nobody knows the real answer apart
from those who have passed down
Gaspare‟s recipe for 150 years. Over
time, appreciation and respect has
grown for this historic and unique brand
which this year celebrates its own 150th
anniversary.
A classic success
Campari is a contemporary classic.
With its colour, aroma and flavour, it
has always been a symbol of passion.
This passion expresses itself in terms of
seduction, sensuality and transgression.
In continuous evolution, an image of
fashion, international, and constantly
cutting-edge, with a style of advertising
that defines and precedes trends and
fashions. Campari persistently follows
sophisticated atmospheres that are
stylish and emotional; the brand has
always been unique. Its recipe and
its unmistakable flavour all offer an
incomparable experience. Campari has
always been distinguishable thanks to its
style, class and elegance.
This is how Campari meets the
expectations of fashionable and dynamic
young adults of legal drinking age: with a
spirit that allows these men and women
to express their individualities, tastes and
lifestyles; which are fresh, dynamic and
active. Their uniqueness determines their
appreciation of life and their preferences
for quality. For people who prefer to
make their own decisions: consumption
is an expression of themselves,
and is therefore a demonstration of
independence.
Campari is derived from a winning
mix of factors, of which its origins,
product uniqueness, courageous and
innovative advertising that is fashionable
and possesses a strong visual impact,
has enabled Campari to distinguish
itself from its competitors. A capable
management team, who throughout the
years has strategically invested in above
and below the line initiatives is part of
Campari‟s mix for success.
Throughout the years, the bottle, as
with all historical luxury brands, has
undergone various changes, but has
consistently maintained its unique
identity and authenticity, which has
always distinguished it. The bottle still
today maintains the same key elements
which have allowed it to possess a clear
personality in the ever-evolving spirits
segment, thereby turning towards a
public of young adults of legal drinking
age with its modernity.
The Campari bottle and its packaging
can be considered a rare example of
consistency in the rapport between
the product and its container.
Notwithstanding evolutions in bottle
and label design, recognizable character
traits and aesthetics of the original have
always remained firm, thus continually
increasing the value of modernity linked
to the brand and its appearance.
harmonising Japanese and Chinese vegetables - the crunch
from the purple cabbage, enoki mushroom, daikon cress, white
radish and Japanese, ginger and pickled shallots.
Me@OUE is Singapore’s only dining establishment offering
three distinct menus – Japanese, French and Chinese – in an
open-concept-kitchen.
