General information<br />

Refer to the front of this manual for general test conditions,<br />

terminology, detailed descriptions of wiring faults <strong>and</strong> a<br />

general trouble shooter for electrical <strong>and</strong> mechanical faults.<br />

<strong>Trouble</strong> codes are displayed by the malfunction indicator<br />

lamp (MIL).<br />

The ECM fault memorv can also be checked usincl<br />

diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector<br />

(DLC).<br />

NOTE: If a trouble code is displayed but not listed in the trouble<br />

code table, suspect engine control module (ECM) fault.<br />

Accessing<br />

Ensure ignition switched OFF.<br />

Bridge data link connector (DLC) terminals 1 <strong>and</strong> 3 0.<br />

Switch ignition ON. DO NOT start engine.<br />

Count MIL flashes. Note trouble codes. Compare with<br />

trouble code table.<br />

<strong>Trouble</strong> codes are indicated as follows:<br />

Long flashes indicate the 'tens' of the trouble code rn [A].<br />

Short flashes indicate the 'units' of the trouble code rn [C].<br />

A short pause separates each flash rn [B].<br />

A long pause separates each trouble code rn [Dl.<br />

For example: <strong>Trouble</strong> code 12 displayed rn.<br />

Switch ignition OFF.<br />

Remove bridge wire.<br />

Erasing<br />

Switch ignition ON.<br />

Switch ignition OFF.<br />

Repeat approximately 50 times.<br />

Repeat checking procedure to ensure no data remains in<br />

ECM fault memory.
