Welcome to Woodstock Park from The Club Secretary
Good afternoon everyone. Welcome to Woodstock Park.
Our visitors today are Cray Wanderers welcome to their Players, Officials and supporters
and also the match officials.
We are still without a win in 2017, still, because of us not playing for 21 days we have
only played four matches—drawing two and losing two. The latest draw was on
Tuesday evening when in appalling conditions Sittingbourne and Guernsey fought
out an entertaining draw. Because of fog in Guernsey it was touch and go as to
whether the game would go ahead. Still at 8.10pm the match kicked off and despite it
obviously was not the best preparation for either side six goals were scored and their
was no shortage of effort on the pitch. The match was played in atrocious conditions
which must have been energy sapping for the players. Three times we went in front
and three times Guernsey pegged us back. Sittingbourne youngsters continue to impress
and it was a fine attacking display by Jake Embery who got a deserved two
goals.
Another to leave us in Anthony O’Connor , which is no surprise really. Anthony travelled
from Wembley to play for us, a journey that I would not like to do too often.
In Tuesdays programme we explained the proposals that the FA have come up with
as regards to reorganisation at level 3 and 4 which is scheduled to be introduced for
the 2018-2019 season. The FA are also reorganising the match officials. Officials will
be either exclusively Referees or Assistant Referees. Personally I think this is a good
idea.
Some good news for the club. On behalf of the club, committee member, Danny Appleton,
entered a competition from a Surrey based water company SES business water
and won! We will receive a cheque for £1000 and they will provide fixes for water
problems such as our leaking shower heads in the dressing rooms.
Danny sells the golden goals tickets and we are very grateful to all those supporters
who regularly buy them. The money from the proceeds goes to help improve the look
of the ground, for example, the new pitch side fencing that you will see in front of the
clubhouse which will gradually be extended around the ground.
On Monday we travel the short distance to Chatham Town. A look at the league table
will show you what a perilous position they are in being nine points adrift of safety.
Ricky Gundry has left us to join Chatham. He will combine playing for the first team
and being their Under 21 assistant manager.
Enjoy the game!

From the Programme Editor
Certainly an eventful evening on Tuesday with the is it on - is it off saga before the
Guernsey game. The picture of the fog at Guernsey airport that I saw made it look unlikely
that the plane couldn’t take off, and when the flight was effectively cancelled only to
be saved by using an aircraft that had just flown in from Birmingham and eventually the
flight took off at about 5.15pm. Then of course the team had the vagaries of the M25 to
navigate in the evening rush hour meaning that the kick off was delayed about half an
hour...however Guernsey are a very friendly club
and with each club getting a share of the spoils I
suppose it was all worthwhile in the end!
Before the game I did a short feature for Back of
the net—South, and am doing another one on
Monday. You can catch Back of the net every other
Tuesday on SUSY Radio 103.4 FM or at
www.susyradio.com/ from 9pm ’till midnight for
three hours of non-league football radio. They say
that “We pride ourselves on our exclusive content,
which includes interviews with managers, players
and football industry professionals, fun features
and studio guests.”!! They also say “YOUR GO-
TO FOR ALL THE LATEST NON-LEAGUE FOOT-
BALL ACROSS SUSSEX & SURREY” and it appears
that its local radio for Redhill, Reigate, Horley
and Crawley! so you wont be able to get it here
in Kent on FM.
Good to hear though that some of you listen to my
predictions on the Sittingbourne match results on
SFM in their Saturday sports show and I almost
got one right ! ( I said 2-2 at Walton Casuals and I
was correct for 81 minutes!)
It’s good that local radio is taking an interest in our
level of football and Radio Kent even mentioned our league last Saturday, not us though!
We have had a useful survey on where the club falls down on marketing and from the
survey it is clear that we aren’t making enough of our you tube channel. Those of us
currently involved in the club simply haven’t got the time to keep all of the media up to
date so if there are any volunteers out there who can help us with the You tube channel
(this would include filming games and interviews, ) and perhaps setting us up on
Linkedin and google plus business then please contact a committee member.
Cray Wanderers History
Cray Wanderers have been in exile from the Cray’s since 1973 when they lost the Grassmeade
ground in Chelsfield Road, due to housing development. They moved to Oxford Road, on the
borders of Footscray and Sidcup, but when that ground was ruled to be unsuitable for Step 5
football (the Wands were then playing in the Kent League) it became necessary from 1998/99 to
play first team matches at Hayes Lane, as tenants of Bromley FC.
Cray Wanderers announced on 6 October 2014 an intention to purchase Flamingo Park, adjacent
to the A20 Sidcup by-pass, subject to receiving planning permission from LB Bromley for a
new sporting community hub. It would see the team play at a new multi-sport stadium with a
spectator capacity of 2,200.
The first origins of Cray Wanderers are linked to the construction of the London, Chatham & Dover
railway line during 1858 to 1860. During their leisure time, migrant workers kicked a ball
around, and that is how the club originated in the St Mary Cray village. The pitch at Star Lane is
now a cemetery, and is located beneath the nine-arch railway viaduct that spans the Cray Valley.
The industrial belt of the River Cray, especially the paper mills, provided much of the club's
support up till the 1950s.
Cray Wanderers were a strong force in senior county football at the turn of the century. After being
Kent Junior Cup semi-finalists and finalists in 1890/91 and 1891/92 they entered the first ever
FA Amateur Cup competition in 1893/94. They had a spell as a professional club between 1895
and 1907. They were a nursery club for Woolwich Arsenal during part of this period. They were
one of the founder members of the Kent League in 1894/95, and they won the championship in
1901/02. Other honours included Southern Suburban League champions in 1898/99, West Kent
League champions in 1903/04, and Kent Senior Cup runners-up in 1899/1900.
After World War One, Cray switched to the London League where they remained till 1934. In
1930/31 they won the Kent Amateur Cup. Cray rejoined the Kent League in 1934/35, but their
four year stay came to grief when 1936 saw the loss of the Fordcroft ground in Cray Avenue,
their home since 1898. Cray were forced to drop into a lower level of football, drifting from one
temporary pitch to another while the club committee dwindled to a perilously small number. The
team struggled badly in the South London Alliance and the Kent Amateur League.
1951/52 heralded a new era, and an upturn in the club's fortunes, when local businessman Mick
Slater took over at the helm. The club was elected to the London League and regained its senior
status. Cray moved to a new ground at Grassmeade in 1955. Their stay there was a very successful
period in the club's history. Drawing extra support from the commuter town of Orpington,
they played in the London League and then the Aetolian League. They were three times
crowned champions, won the League Cup twice, and also won the Kent Amateur Cup three
times.
Cray switched to the semi-professional Metropolitan League for five seasons commencing in
1966/67. In 1971/72 a merger of the Metropolitan League and the Greater London League created
the Met London League.
Cray moved to Oxford Road in 1973/74. Johnny Biddle and Jimmy Wakeling proved to be successful
managers. In 1974/75 Cray won the Met London League and League Cup, scoring 170
goals in all matches that season. In 1976/77 and 1977/78 Cray won the London Spartan League
championship.
Cray decided to return to the Kent League in 1978/79. Success came quickly because Cray won
the championship in 1980/81, having been runners-up the year before. Their powerful new team
under manager Harry Richardson reached the FA Vase quarterfinal and 5 th round in those two
seasons. After that, the 1980s decade brought only one more piece of silverware, the Kent
League Cup in 1983/84. After finishing Kent League runners up in 1990/91, Cray had a lean period
during most of the 1990s, with the exception of 1992/93 when they won the Kent Senior Trophy.
Continued later on in the programme.

Cray Wanderers History—Cont
A new club chairman Gary Hillman arrived in 1994/95 and Ian Jenkins, a Cray
player since 1993, was appointed manager in 1999. By now, Cray were tenants
of Bromley FC. As champions of the Kent League in 2002/03 and 2003/04, also
reaching the FA Vase quarterfinal, they achieved promotion into the Ryman
League Division One. Five years later at the end of season 2008/09 came further
promotion into the Ryman Premier League, the highest level of football that
the club has played at since the war.
After parting company with long-serving manager Ian Jenkins, relegation into the
Ryman Division One North came at the end of 2013/14. The 2014/15 season
started with much optimism but this was soon dispelled with a run of difficult results
and three changes in management. Looking very much like having to suffer
back to back relegations at Christmas and with 10 games to go after suffering
a home defeat to the eventual League Champions the Wands went on a 10
game winning run, with a team assembled by the then manager Tommy Warrilow
to secure survival and became the Ryman North League Team of the Year.
For 2015/16 The Wands were managed by former player Tony Russell. The
Wands finished third in the Ryman North Division losing in the play-off semi final.
But off the field victories were gained with a successful planning application,
which is subject to Secretary of State ratification.
So onwards to 2016 and The Wands find themselves back in the Ryman South
go visit foes old and new again managed by Tony Russell and a majority of the
successful team from 2015/16
Carshalton Athletic 2 Sittingbourne 2,
Attendance 242
Wow! What an exciting, brilliant finish by Sittingbourne
to score twice in added time and
force a dramatic draw.
They’ve irritatingly had it done to them this
season, conceding late goals to lose points,
so they would know exactly how Carshalton
felt.
The thing is, they so deserved this draw – it
was a performance full of passion and determination
to bounce back from the 5-1 humiliation
from Greenwich Borough on Monday.
Manager Nick Davis would have been looking
for a reaction from that, and he thrillingly got
one as goals by youngsters Jake Embery and
Josh Wisson pulled it back from 2-0 down
with 90 minutes already played.
Davis rang the changes with Sam Welch back
from suspension, the invaluable Conrad Lee
available again, Anthony O’Connor recalled
upfront and Josh Wisson getting a starting
chance in midfield.
Out from the starting line-up went Stefan
Wright, Hicham Akhazzan, Tom Carr and
Connor Wilkins, with Jono Richardson given a
new central defensive partner to follow Dan
Tanner, Danny Rumbol and Carr, with Lee
dropping back to take over. Which he did in
his normal unflustered and sensible way.
They lost Tom Carlse, one of their best and
most consistent players this season, early
doors, suffering from an infection that had laid
him low all week. In his place for an impressive
debut came youngster Raphe Brown.
Sittingbourne started bravely, with O’Connor,
Remell Davis and Hassan Jalloh all high up
the pitch, pressing hard and running themselves
into the ground.
They’ll pay for this later on I told myself – how
wrong was I!
Carshalton, who have been in the league’s
top six all season, played some pretty triangles
on their immaculate 3G pitch and kept
possession well but didn’t threaten a lot
against Sittingbourne’s high energy commitment.
Simon Overland made a couple of good
saves, and at the other end Davis hit one decent
chance into the keeper’s arms, Jalloh
saw an excellent shot saved at full
length and Wisson’s effort was also kept out
by the keeper.
Carshalton obviously weren’t happy with the
way the half went as they made two half-time
substitutions, and they were soon ahead,
Aikhionbare smashing a shot home from the
edge of the box after Kaba’s driving run from
midfield.
Overland made another good diving save but
was beaten from 25 yards on
72 minutes by a well-placed low shot from
Sobowale, benefitting from the fact he wasn’t
closed down quickly enough.
Carshalton slowed it down and looked to be
holding on, but Sittingbourne determinedly
pressed forward and a terrific Wisson pass
from midfield slipped sub Jake Embery free to
shoot past the keeper with exactly 90 minutes
played.
The tails were up and Carshalton were panicking
but only four minutes were signalled for
added time, and we were into the sixth when
Sittingbourne forced a corner. Surely their last
chance … Up came Overland as all 22 players
crowded into the penalty area. Lee hit his
corner over all of them and Wisson thundered
in from beyond the far post to head it unstoppably
into the net. What drama.
Carshalton were annoyed with the referee for
extending the time added on but they had only
themselves to blame for some blatant timewasting,
and it was probably the first thing
he’d given in Sittingbourne’s favour all afternoon.
It was the sort of exciting climax that will live
long in the memory and renews your faith in
football. Good on Sittingbourne – to go away
to one of the leading teams in the division,
play as well as they did on an unfamiliar surface,
drop two goals, and still get a draw.
That’s quite an effort.
Sittingbourne: Simon Overland, Sam
Welch, Tom Carlse (Raphe Brown, 13 min),
Conrad Lee, Jono Richardson (Yellow card),
Josh Wisson (Yellow card), Tom Brunt
(Hicham Akhazzan, 77 min), Joe Loft, Anthony
O’Connor (Jake Embery, 69 min), Remell
Davis, Hassan Jalloh.

Ryman Div 1 South
Walton Casuals 3 Sittingbourne 2,
Attendance 62
When these teams met last month, the home
side deservedly won 3-2 with the visitors making
the score look more respectable by getting
their second goal in injury time.
Funny, but that’s just how this one turned out
with Sittingbourne having the tables turned decisively
on them by play-off hopefuls Walton
Casuals.
In fact, that excellent home win over Walton in
December was the last time Sittingbourne won
a match, as this defeat continued a disappointing
run of seven games without a victory.
Walton are a very decent side, well practiced at
playing on the 3G pitch they share at Whyteleafe,
and dangerous in the way they run at
players and attack with pace.
But, as their record shows, they’re vulnerable at
the back – Sittingbourne scored twice though
didn’t really do enough to get anything from the
game.
With a wide selection choice after three weeks
without a game, manager Nick Davis put an
emphasis on youth, and the 16 didn’t include
experienced players such as Hicham
Akhazzan, Ricky Gundry, Remmell Davis, Anthony
O’Connor and Dan Tanner.
But the youngsters preferred in attack after
scoring in the last game three weeks previously,
Josh Wisson and Jake Embery, both limped
off injured in the second half.
And before that, Davis had already made another
substitution, with Stefan Wright removed
from midfield, where Sittingbourne were struggling
to hold their own, and Conrad Lee going
back in there.
Sittingbourne started well enough but Casuals
got the benefit of an early goal, a set piece from
their first corner of the match.
Goalscoring defender-captain Cheadle raced to
the near post to shoot first time past Simon
Overland.
The Brickies keeper went on to pull
off two excellent first half saves and at the other
end the Walton keeper made a good save to
keep out Danny Rumbol’s header.
Sittingbourne equalised on 20 minutes when
Wisson swept in his third goal in as many
games, converting a loose ball after Embery’s
miscued shot fell to him.
Walton, spurred on as before by the impressive
Sammoutis in midfield, pushed forward with
Wright and Joe Loft both picking up bookings
as they tried to stop players running past them.
Sittingbourne defended well, though, and with
Sam Welch twice in terrific positions to clear off
the line, they looked like picking up a point the
longer the second half went on.
But the pacy and clever Hudson undid them
twice in the last 10 minutes, running at and
committing defenders before sweeping the ball
in. He deftly dumped two defenders on their
backsides on his way to scoring his second.
Sittingbourne at last worked out how to break
down the Walton defence – along the artificial
ground with swift passing, just as the home
team had tried to do to them all game. And it
paid off in added time when Tom Carlse and
Lee combined down the left to send Tom Brunt
through to neatly beat the advancing keeper.
Sometimes, as against Greenwich Borough,
Dorking Wanderers and Tooting & Mitcham,
you have to hold your hands up and admit the
better side won on the day.
Sittingbourne have plenty of games left this
season up against sides who aren’t as quick,
skilful and organised as Walton Casuals. That’s
when they need to be on top of their game to
halt their poor run of results.
Sittingbourne: Simon Overland, Sam Welch,
On This Day
15 Years ago — From the East Kent Gazette of 6th February 2002 : Sittingbourne were
expected to sign an agreement to move to the bottom pitch at Central pitch ( named by us
as “Bourne Park” ). A club spokesman said “Agreement is promised from Caernsport any
day now and once agreed and signed the works will begin. “Grants are available but we
still have to raise at least 10% of the costs involved, though the move to the bottom pitch
could be the start of a new chapter in the history of Sittingbourne Football Club. “When
completed it should reduce our running costs which exceed by far many of the clubs
within our league. I would even go as far as saying that our costs are more than any other
club in the league. “ We were talking to Grantham when they came for a recent match
and a committee member told us their wages are double what we pay yet their running
costs are a quarter of ours . He said that if Grantham had our costs they would not continue.”
Saturday 2nd February 2002, Histon 2 Sittingbourne 1,
Histon were fourth from top in the Southern League whilst we were fourth from bottom.
However the commitment that Sittingbourne showed was second to none. They were
equal in terms of commitment, ability and , over the whole match, possession too. 2-0
down, Sittingbourne then really took the game to Histon. Clint Gooding got a goal back for
The Brickies but despite mounting pressure in the last twenty minutes were unable to get
the elusive .
This match was memorable for the stand that the Sittingbourne fans took against the pricing
structure at Histon. For spectators that were not club members , Histon levied an extra
pound on the entry fee making it £6.00. Some of our spectators watched the match
from a road overlooking the ground before gong in free at half time.
10 Years ago— Saturday 3rd February 2007, Kingstonian 1 Sittingbourne 1. Att:274
This was a battling performance by the Brickies against a Kingstonian team with a new
manager and that fielded just 3 of the players who drew with Sittingbourne earlier in the
season at Bourne Park. Kingstonian had come into this game after a good 3-1 win over
the Met Police so they were expecting to push on from that victory however Sittingbourne
soon proved that they would be no mugs and in fact hit the woodwork twice, missed a
great chance and all this whilst twice being down to 10 men, firstly when Lee Hockey had
to leave the field for the final 20 minutes of the first half for treatment to a head wound,
and then on 80 minutes when Paul Ainsworth was sent off for bringing down a K’s player
in the area and being deemed to be the last man. Lee Browning was generally considered
to be our “Man Of The Match” on the day.
Team: Steve Williams, Toby Ashmore, Joe Dowley, Paul Ainsworth, Lee Hockey,
Kieran Marsh, Anthony Hogg, Jon Neal, Mark Lovell, Hicham Akhazzan, Lee Browning,
Subs: (used) Mitchell Sherwood, Sabeur Trabelsi. (Not used) Ricky Spiller, Tristan
Knowles, Josh Willis
5 Years ago — Due to bad weather no matches were played between 28th January
and 25th February.
