KFC in Cathcart Street robbed of a substantial amount of cash
CRIME SCENE: Police officials investigating a robbery at KFC that took place on
Wednesday evening/Thursday morning. Explosives were used to blow two safes open
KENTUCKY Fried Chicken
(KFC) in Cathcart Street were
hit by robbers last Wednesday
evening using explosives
to blow open both safes on
the force the safe open.
According to reliable sources
the thugs are believed to
have made off a substantial
amount of cash.
The robbery was discovered
by staff reporting for work on
Friday morning. The explosion
is believed to have
caused a lot of damage to the

interior ceilings, toilets and
tiled floors.
It is unclear how the robbers
gained entrance to the
premises but according to
reliable sources a side gate
was 'not locked' and they
forced in at that point. It could
not be established why an an
alarm was not triggerred.
Police bomb disposal experts
and forensic experts
were called into search for
clues.

Ingredients
4 pork loin steaks of about 1 cm thick
1 egg beaten
250 ml breadcrumbs, fresh or toasted
250 ml flour
Salt and pepper
Combination of olive oil and butter for frying
Mustard and fresh lemon slices for serving
Method
Place the pork steaks on a flat surface, get a rolling pin, wine
bottle or anything with enough weight. Use cling wrap and
place a layer on top of the meat to protect them and keep
them intact while you hit them with your rolling pin, flattening
the steaks and making them even all over.
Now construct your work station. Season the flour with salt
and pepper and place in a flat bowl. Place the beaten egg in
another bowl and the breadcrumbs in a bowl. Start to coat
your steaks by first rolling them around in the seasoned flour,
then dip them in the egg and lastly cover the steaks with
breadcrumbs making sure everything is covered.
Heat a combination of oil and butter in your pan and fry the
steaks for 2 to 3 minutes turning often making sure it does not
burn. The steaks are thin hence they will be done very quickly.
Remove from the heat and serve this work of art dish with
mustard, fresh lemons and a side dish of potato salad.
Wrong Detergent
A young boy, about eight years old,
was at the corner "Mom and Pop"
grocery picking out a pretty good
size box of laundry detergent. The
grocer walked over, and, trying to
be friendly, asked the boy if he had
a lot of laundry to do.
"Oh, no laundry," the boy said, "I'm
going to wash my dog."
"But you shouldn't use this to wash
your dog. It's very powerful and if
you wash your dog in this, he'll get
sick. In fact, it might even kill him."
But the boy was not to be stopped
and carried the detergent to the
counter and paid for it, even as the
grocer still tried to talk him out of
washing his dog.
About a week later the boy was back
in the store to buy some candy. The
grocer asked the boy how his dog
was doing. "Oh, he died," the boy
said.
The grocer, trying not to be an "Itold-you-so",
said he was sorry the
dog died but added, "I tried to tell
you not to use that detergent on
your dog."
"Well, the boy replied, "I don't think
it was the detergent that killed him."
"Oh? What was it then?"
"I think it was the spin cycle!"

SANRAL assures that road construction in King is on schedule

IN a statement issued this week by
SANRAL the construction work on
roads in and around King William's
Town are on schedule.
Rehabilitation of roads include setions
of Cathcart Street, Buffalo Road; Grey
Street, Alexandra Road and the
intersection at Hargreaves Avenue
where a roundabout is currently under
construction and Maitland Road to
Bhisho and include improvements to
drainage, road repairs, and new
surfacing on the said routes.
'SANRAL would like to confirm
that construction on the National
Route N2 section 15 from Buffalo
River to Breidbach intersection and
National Route R63 from Alexandra
road to Bhisho is still on schedule,' the
statement said.
A localized delay has occurred in Grey
Street due to the position and type of
existing services, the details of which
were unknown due to the age of the
services,' said the statement.
It was expected that the Grey Street
upgrade would be completed by the
end of February
'An unexpected amount of rock was
also encountered during excavations.
The current expected date of completion
for Grey Street is therefore
Friday, 30 June 2017.'
The first phase of the Hargreaves
roundabout is expected to be completed
by the middle of next month.
This will result in Hargreaves Avenue
being partially opened to traffic
travelling from East London and for
vehicles travelling from Hargreaves
Road to King Williams Town only.
'However, the current restrictions will
be re-introduced for a short period
of time during the final surfacing of
the road,' the statement added.
Rehabilitation work in Alexandra and
Maitland Streets, which will result in
selective closures, commenced on
Monday (30 January 2017).
Motorists are advised to be observant
of all advance warning signs
and lane closures, and should
exercise caution when travelling
through the construction work zones.
The speed limits are in place and will
be enforced.
The work is due for completion by end of
November 2017.
Despite SANRAL'S assurances that the
roadworks in King is on schedule, with the
exception of Grey Street, it has still left a
bitter taste in many motorists mouths.
“What are they going to do about the side
streets that are falling apart due to the heavy
traffic that motorists using altenative routes
are causing,' questioned one Kingite.
A local businessman whose business has
been seriously affected by the closure of
Grey Street said: 'If I stood at my front door
and saw people working I would feel
happier....but little seems to be happening
and I wonder if the new finishing date 'will
ever come....probably after I have been
forced to close my doors.'
SANRAL is aware of all the grievances and
apologizes for any inconvenience caused.

THE KHS Senior League Debating
team recently attended
the Alexander Debating Festival
in Port Elizabeth.
The debates were prefaced by
a training workshop.
Mrs Judith van Rensburg, the
KHS coach remarked:' The
team competed against 4
schools out of the 20 attending
and emerged victorious in all
their encounters'.
She added: 'The girls acquitted
themselves with élan and
aplomb, using their years of
experience to telling effect, to
vanquish all before them'
A litmus test to their expertise
is that three of the team, Mlibo
Bangushe, Sibulele Nobuzana
and Asiphe Ngceletshane,
were awarded Best Speaker
Accolades.
KHS anticipates a fruitful and
fulfilling year in the Border

Motor Mecca donates
to KWT SPCA
BIKE GIVERS: Members of the Moto Mecca Motorcycling club at Pirates
where they donated proceeds to the King SPCA after celebrating their
20th Anniversary at the club in November last year
THE Motor Mecca Motorcyling
Club (MCC) based in
East London made a much
needed to donation to the
King SPCA at Pirates Club at
the weekend.
Included in the items handed
over were 7 blankets, 25
litres of white paint, 2 industrial
brooms, 30 litres of detergent
cleanser and to top it all
a cash donation of R5 000.
MCC President Cameron
Sweetman said the cash
would be deposited into the
SPCA account on Monday.
He said the items and cash
were raised at MCC's 20 th
'Sleep Over' Anniversary function
held at Pirates last November.
“The event was well attended
with 250 motor bikes going
through the gate and despite
some 'heavy' rain on the Saturday
evening 'most stayed
on and had a great evenings
entertainment,' said Sweet
man.
He said the King SPCA had
been earmarked for the proceeds
for tis years which is
held every five years.
“Next time we will choose another
charitable organisation
to benefit,' he said.
Motor Mecca previously donated
dog food to the King
SPCA as a 'starter' before the
anniversary creationisms.
“We feel good that we have
done something for the cashstrapped
SPCA because it is
a role model and we hope
our donation goes some way
to alleviate the institutions
financial plight,'
SPCA Chairperson Annette
Rademeyer said;” We are
very grateful for their support.
The money they are donating
they want to pay off on our
drug bill so that will be done
as soon as it is received. It
will help a lot.
'With winter coming up blankets
are always needed and
something that very few people
think about are cleaning
materials. We go through
litres of the stuff especially jik
and anti bacterial stuff.
'We get parvo and other diseases
into the building and
we have to be careful to kill
the germs so they don’t
spread.

have enough. So thank you
so much guys for all your
effort – not just yesterday’s
donation but also the dog
food you gave us last time,'

Africa Bike Week will cruise
into East London on April 27,
bringing about 8000 bikers
with it.

Bike Week is a five-day
motorcycle extravaganza
that has taken place in Margate
for the past six years.
This year, for the first time,
Bike Week will be held in
East London. For motorcycle
enthusiasts, it promises to be
an event like no other. However,
bike lover or not, be
sure to be blown away by the
magnitude of the event.
“East London will be invaded
by more than 5000 Harleys
and about 3000 other [motor]
bikes. It’s going to be huge!”

enough, to learn how to
ride a motorbike. “Through
various riding schools, we
plan to show and teach people
how to ride in a safe and
controlled environment,”

HELPING HAND
SCHOOLBAG PROJECT
The Helping Hand Schoolbag
project has once again aided
needy pupils in starting their
big Grade 1 adventure.
The project, established 10
years ago in 2007, has since
assisted more than 30000
pupils in need by providing
them with stationery supplies
and schoolbags every year.
This year, 4600 schoolbags
with essential stationery supplies
will be handed over to
Grade 1 pupils across the
country.
“Children are the bank which
we invest in,” Helping Hand
Executive Director, Danie
Brink, said.
“Our interest is in their successful
futures as doctors,
teachers and leaders of our
country.
“The project plays a vital role
in the lives of these youngsters
because with such a
bag they can start their
schooling on an equal footing
with their peers,” he said.
Helping Hand, founded in
1949, has been working to
break the cycle of poverty in
South Africa for more than
60 years.
According to Brink, the foundations
for a successful future
are created early on in
a child’s schooling career.
In the Eastern Cape, 448
bags were distributed to
young pupils this year, 45 of
which were handed over to
East London pupils.
“We come year after year and
there is always a greater
need,” East London Helping
Hand regional representative,
Marlene Basson, said.
“We know the bags are making
a difference in their lives
because we see the joy on
their faces when they get
their own bag.”

A woman got on a bus holding a baby.
The bus driver said: "That's the ugliest
baby I've ever seen." In a huff, the
woman slammed her fare into the fare
box and took an aisle seat near the
rear of the bus.
The man seated next to her sensed
that she was agitated and asked her
what was wrong.
"The bus driver insulted me," she
fumed.
The man sympathized and said: "Why,
he's a public servant and shouldn't
say things to insult passengers."
"You're right," she said. "I think I'll go
back up there and give him a piece of
my mind."
"That's a good idea," the man said.
"Here, let me hold your monkey."

One afternoon, this guy drives down a
highway to visit a nearby lake and
relax. On his way to the lake, a guy
dressed from head to toe in red
standing on the side of the highway

window, and yells, "Let me guess.
You're the blue jerk of the highway,
and just what the heck do you wanna

Dead Legs!
MANY runners often experience what is commonly called
“dead legs “.
This phenomenon has no scientific word or explanation.
Strangely enough in my experience this phase in ones training
usually precedes bouts of superb running so don’t PAN-
IC. It will pass.
This feeling of having “dead “or heavy legs is normally attributed
to over training, doing too much hill work or too much
leg work in the gym.
A short break will sort it out in no time!
Conversely, however, if you are training for Comrades it is
advisable to push through this phase as it will stand you in
good stead for race day. As long as you have no injury niggles
this is merely another step in your training.

Kingites fare well at
70.3 Half Ironman
ON THE
MOVE:
Mike Webb IN
ACTION
during the
21.1 km run
while
competing in
the 70.3
Ironman
TWO local athletes participated
in this past Sundays 70.3
Half Ironman event in East
London and both fared exceptionallly
well
The event was a huge success
with over 2800 athletes
participating in near perfect
weather, which was a huge
relief considering the storms
and sea conditions of Friday
and Saturday.
The course consisted of a 1.9
km swim from Orient beach,
a 90 km Cycle ride (Berlin
and back) and a 21.1 km run.
Shaun Gradwell, who resides
in East London, but works at
KWT Engineering (so qualifies
as a local) did his first
Half Ironman and completed
the event in 7 hrs 54 minutes
Shaun only decided to give
the Half Ironman a bash late
last year and has had to put
in many early mornings on
the bike in order to get prepared.
The hard work paid off
on Sunday
The run leg proved to be the
toughest stretch for Shaun as
it did for many athletes due to
a combination of a 1.9 km
swim, a 90 km cycle and
some decent heat.
However, with superb support
along the route, Shaun
dug deep and pushed
through to the magic Red
Carpet.
I believe he is now contemplating
doing the Full Ironman
in April .
The other local athlete participating,
Mike Webb was doing
his second 70.3 and is no
stranger to endurance events
and had a near perfect day
out.
Although his swim was a few
minutes slower than last year
Mike pushed hard on the way
back from Berlin on the bike
leg and managed to take ten
minutes off his previous time.
The run section of 21.1 kms
is always the toughest as the
legs are a bit “wobbly “ but as
a seasoned runner this was
Mikes best section of the day
and the heat didn’t bother
him as much as it did other
runners . (December heat
training paid off).
He managed to take off 26
minutes off his previous run
time finishing the 21.1 kms in
a time of 1 hr 45 minutes.
This enabled him to finish in
a total time of 6 hrs 02 minutes,
an improvement of 33
minutes from last year.
Mike is now preparing for the
Buffs Marathon (end of Feb)
and then the full Ironman in
April followed by The Hobbit
100 km trail run and Comrades
to finish off the first half
of the year.
Well done to both Mike and
Shaun and to all the organizers
on a superb event .
