original methods of marking have become inadequate (ear tags have been lost etc). Please
make every effort to identify all animals through a dual marking method e.g. ear tags and
transponders, so if one method fails there is still a reasonable chance that the individual can
be identified.
This publication contains some demographic and genetic information to inform holders of
scimitar-horned oryx about the general status of the global population. However, it is not
designed to supersede any analyses or breeding recommendations produced by regional
coordinators. The data includes all institutions globally who have provided information on
their collection of scimitar-horned oryx regardless of regional zoo association affiliations
and membership of coordinated breeding programmes. Some additional information is
included for the EEP as the studbook is an important method of communication between
the coordinator and EEP institutions.
This full register and studbook for scimitar-horned oryx updates any previously published
register.
In addition to the basic studbook data, this volume contains information on the natural
history, conservation status, and current research initiatives as well as a bibliography for
the species. These sections are intended to give a basic overview of these areas and are not
designed to be a comprehensive guide to the biology, husbandry, conservation and research
status of scimitar-horned oryx.
As with many species, our knowledge of scimitar-horned oryx ecology and captive
management is incomplete, and research is required before we can discuss some areas of
their biology and husbandry with any real confidence. If you aware of any research
initiatives, then I would be grateful for any additional information that can be disseminated
to those working with scimitar-horned oryx in captivity and in-situ.
