BC-DX TopNews WWDXC #945 BC-DX 945

I heard 6190 very strong this week on Monday through Wed, but missed the
signal on Fri and Sat too. This signal of the 17 kW set of 1951 RIAS
Berlin era was always strong here in Stuttgart - due of the steep fountain
antenna characteristics, some 750 kilometers away of the Berlin Britz
site.

DLR-DLF 6190 BACK on the air now July 4 at 1515 UT. The signal appears to
be much reduced. Perhaps a standby facility.

Kommando zurueck. DLF Berlin Britz 6190 kHz ist wieder auf Sendung. Etwas
mufflige Modulation zwar, aber immerhin S=9 um 1520 UT. Next door BBC 6195
kHz in Persian S=9+15dB.

DLF Berlin Britz 6190 is in full activity today too, but the signal is
weaker and it suffers from fading. It seems that they are using a
different antenna instead of the fountain antenna.

Here 6190 has just the splash from the BBC's European service in Persian,
Pashto and Dari on 6195 (what's the purpose of that, by the way? Wonder
why IBB has no such service on air, too..........). All I can make out is
either a faint, wobbling carrier or, more likely I think, two faint
carriers a few Hertz apart, hetting each other.
No standby facility exists (unless someone brought in ham-level gear),
only the vintage 20 kW Telefunken transmitter from 1950, the original 6005
kHz transmitter. It is in use on 6190 since 1999 and has not been retuned
to its original frequency when the damage of an expensive transformer
knocked the new 6005 transmitter off air three years ago.
Reduced power operation is very well possible; around 2003 the transmitter
was already run at only 6 kW due to technical problems.
Remarkable anyway that apparently engineers bother to repair the
transmitter even on a Sunday.
