(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 14) I can confirm that Putbus DRM on 729 kHz has been off (or at least not audible) since Jan 1st. So far Spain and Greece have been dominating and CKAC 730 has been a regular catch before midnight. If you find out more about BR 729 kHz in the next few days, please let me know. (wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 15) As a reminder: The era of Frankfurt on mediumwave will end tonight [Dec 31, 2009]. The last block of foreign language broadcasts just ended at 2130 UT, and in all likelihood the two transmitters on 594 kHz will be switched off at local midnight, i.e. 2300 UT. The foreign language block also included Russian and Polish broadcasts from Berlin, probably (i.e. if I do not overlook something) the last ones from RBB studios that went out on mediumwave, four years after RBB shut down its own AM transmitter. file:///Z|/DOKUMENTATION-BULLETINS/WWDXD-BCDX/2010/BCDX947.TXT[11.06.2012 10:39:47]

Hessischer Rundfunk not only abandons mediumwave but also stops the cooperation with Westdeutscher Rundfunk on the foreign language field (RBB only provides studio capacity anymore since their Radio Multikulti closed down a year ago). WDR plans to itself produce broadcasts in Greek and Spanish, until today provided by HR. In order to free up some money for this the broadcasts in Turkish will be abridged, a plan that triggered a controversial and in parts just nonsensical debate. (Kai Ludwig-D, dxld Dec 31) [later] Concerning the closure of 594 kHz: It appears that the Hoher Meissner synchro transmitter left the air a few seconds before local midnight. The main transmitter at Rodgau-Weiskirchen (near Frankfurt) stayed on air for another five minutes of last news, then the carrier had been killed at 23:05:33 UT during the opening announcement of ARD- Nachtkonzert. I suspect this has been done by engineers on-site, not by timer or remote control. This relay of ARD-Nachtkonzert replaces as of today the former overnight relay of MDR Info. It's absolutely crazy: Now the all-news station relays overnight the same programme of classical music than hr2. And to my knowledge this saves not even money. No idea why they did this (there are even conspiracy theories), the announcement of the "changed overnight programming" does not mention any reasons: Now 594 kHz is here in Germany dominated by Bulgaria and the BBC relay in the Ukraine. In the case of Bulgaria it is ironical that this is a transmission site which looks like a clone of GDR sites, simply because in fact it is one. Only the original Funkwerk Koepenick transmitter has at some point (1995 acc. to this source; the old one was a 250 kW, too) been replaced by a Russian rig: (Kai Ludwig-D, dxld Jan 1) New frequency change for Voice of America in Tibetan from Jan.8: 1400-1500 NF 9315 LAM 100 kW 075 deg, x11695 LAM, re-ex15530/17520 BIB (R BULGARIA DX MIX News, Ivo Ivanov, via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Jan 14) GREECE The Greeks still on limited two transmitters only, on 9420 and 15630 kHz, carried same Greek program no Radio Filia relay today. From a land where there is no separation of church and state, Sunday morning services taking up 2+ hours of public airtime. Fortunately, the rest of us can just enjoy this for the music without the baggage of belief, thank you very much to the broke Greek taxpayers. (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Jan 14) GREEK BAILOUT? Hello all: I do not seem to be getting any replies from the Voice of Greece on the status of the Avlis 3 transmitter on 9420 kHz. I am wondering if there is more to the problem than the transmitter breaking down. Perhaps they have shut it down to save electricity and even furloughed or eliminated positions at ERA 5 to save money.
