BRYANT The worldwide DX fraternity was very shocked to learn of John's untimely death on 9 February. Emeritus Professor John H. Bryant served as a Senior Fulbright Research Fellow in Japan in the mid-1970s and was an internationally recognised authority on East Asian Architecture. John's contributions to the profession of architecture were recognized when he was elevated to the status of Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in May 1997. Following his retirement in 2000, John built a retirement retreat in the San Juan Islands on the US West Coast, from where he was able to indulge his interest in broadcast and tropical band DX from Asia. He undertook file:///Z|/DOKUMENTATION-BULLETINS/WWDXD-BCDX/2010/BCDX952.TXT[11.06.2012 10:39:52]

serious studies on radio propagation on lower frequencies, co-authored books including "Zenith Radio: The Early Years - 1919-1935", "Zenith Radio: The Glory Years - 1936-1945" and "Dangerous Crossings: the First Modern Polar Expedition, 1925", and even made the front page of the NZ DX Times in June 2007. That issue featured his pioneering DXpedition to Easter Island in March 2007. In more recent times John was a leading light in the Ultralight Radio DX field. Our hobby has lost a fine and generous man and we extend our sympathy to his family, friends and colleagues. (one of the countless commemorations; this via NZDXT Feb 15) I am deeply saddened by the loss of my very good friend John. He was the most articulate and enthusiastic man I have ever known. I learned so much of life, art, history, architecture, common sense, and good humor from him... not to mention our common bond of the radio monitoring and "DXing" hobby over 24 special years. I am already missing him immensely. (Guy Atkins-WA-USA, dxld Feb 11) I was very saddened to hear of John Bryant's passing. I always regarded him as one of the pillars of the hobby. His expertise & enthusiasm will be sorely missed. His drive for enhanced equipment DX performance was an inspiration, especially for those of us not as technically astute as he was.?My prayers and condolences go out to his family. I would like to suggest some sort of memorial activity at the upcoming IRCA convention or an award in his name. Just a few thoughts ... Vaya con Dios, Compadre! (Craig Barnes, IRCA mailing list via dxld Feb 19) John and I shared a common calling of university professor and a common hobby of long-distance radio. In the 90's he visited me in Newfoundland, and I traveled to Grayland WA for one of his famous radio get-togethers. John was a man with enthusiasm, intelligence, humor, and generosity. I am very deeply saddened by his sudden demise, and I offer my condolences to Linda and to his family. (Jean Burnell-NS-CAN, dxld Feb 19) Please accept my sincere condolences from London Ontario CANADA. I have known John for well over 20 Years through the Radio Hobby, and most recently became very close and worked with John on the Ultralight Radio Front. John is truly admired throughout the world as a True Gentleman, and his contributions to all the Hobbies and Professions he admired will be forever cherished. Thanks John for making my life a little brighter. I'll miss you pal!! Regards (Robert S. Ross-Ont-CAN, dxld Feb 11) Linda and Mary Ellen, please accept my most sincerest condolences. I was so looking forward to the Bryants' living just across the water from the very active radio community in Victoria and southern Vancouver Island. I had the honour of knowing John for some twenty years, and of meeting Linda on several occasions both at their wonderful Orcas Island home, and when the two of you visited Victoria. No one would ever say a bad thing about John. file:///Z|/DOKUMENTATION-BULLETINS/WWDXD-BCDX/2010/BCDX952.TXT[11.06.2012 10:39:52]
