(Carlos Goncalves-POR, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Feb 12) SAO TOME E PRINCIPE 4940 VoA, Pinheira, at 1911-1940 UT on 10 Feb, French to Africa, f/ball news, interviews and reports on the CAN, which has only recently been held in Angola, and an announcement at nearly 1930 UT explaining this had been a special b/cast, "VoA in Special English" started at 1930 UT. What puzzled me a bit was not only this separate prgr in French while // 1530+HF were airing the "normal" evening b/cast, but foremost because the modulation level until 1929 UT was very low, as if we were dealing with some irregular signal from an African country; 55444. I am no regular VoA listener or observer, so don't know whether this happens occasionaly, but think not ... or am I wrong? Noted with more than fair signal of S=8 around 1430 to 1450 UT, in // to usual registered 17660 kHz to West Africa which is tiny poor of S=2 just above the "turf" just slightly above the local noise level with computer on. Light Arabic music program with charming Arabic lady voice. I can confirm that you have heard us on 5020 kHz, unfortunately our transmitter blew up the frequency driver circuit and one of the valves so it is off air at the moment. We are working on restoring services ASAP. Much better visible on Microsoft Virtual Earth SW mast visible at best on 15 April 2003 GE image northern mast 09 26 12.83 S 160 03 41.72 E central mast, in north-south row 09 26 15.04 S 160 03 42.07 E southern mast 09 26 17.39 S 160 03 42.50 E dipol feeding-in points probably on 09 26 13.92 S 160 03 42.02 E and 09 26 16.26 S 160 03 42.34 E image of 2007 ff. differs like 30 meters eastwards! (wb, SW TXsite Feb 11) [later] Ms. Min Sun to Bob Hill. The 9545 [sic, rather 9541.55] kHz would not propagate so well right now due to atmospheric conditions. We also had a technical fault in the dual frequency transmitter (which was on 5020 kHz) owing to the antenna physically breaking. We are in the process of getting it back up to 5020 kHz and making a few technical changes ... as we are very far away from anything here, probably looking in the next two weeks before we are back!
