Any idea what happened to VOA Erching 1000 kW transmitter?<br />

It was a Continental (2 x 500 kW), same MF type was in Poro etc.<br />

I was a USIA/IBS monitor during years 1960-1964 under IBS/EF (Frequency<br />

chief) George Jacobs and I have available Helsinki monitoring post logs<br />

1957-1964. 173 also was jammed.<br />

I live in Heinola in hospital. I write histories for the Finnish<br />

Radiohistorical Society journal.<br />

The former 173 kHz 1734 mb, VOA/RIAS facilitie Munich Erching - belonged<br />

to the US Munich consulate - has been scrapped in around 1990-1991.<br />

Erected in cold war era around 1952 to 1953.<br />

In service from Sept? 1953 til Febr 1, 1964.<br />

In use at selected times from 25 January 1954 to 31 January 1964 on 173<br />

kHz. VOA also off from 1 Feb 1964.<br />

Resumed in August 1969. VoA Russian in test. From Sept 3rd, 1969 regular<br />

1600-2000 English, 2000-2200 Russian, [comment: to USSR occupation army in<br />

GDR and CSSR after Czech occupation, wb]. Ceased service end? of 1973<br />

again.<br />

On 22.11.1975 entry again on ITU Geneve new longwave plan (in effect from<br />

Nov 1987) on 209/207 kHz channel - under GER but on request of USA-Munich<br />

general consulate!, 0400-1800 hrs UT nondir 500 kW, 27.4 dB max. ERP<br />

amplification gain.<br />

The VOA transmitter at Erching became available to the DLF Deutschlandfunk<br />

program on 1 March 1979. It started operations on 209 kHz using 500 kW on<br />

4 July 1979. On 1 February 1988 the frequency was changed to 207 kHz.<br />

It was the same 1000 kW Continental TX gear like in Poro PHL, Bangkok-THA<br />

and Naha Okinawa JPN. Antenna with 26 dB ERP gain, from 1979 til 1989<br />

leased to German public broadcaster DLF Deutschlandfunk on 209 / 207 kHz<br />

longwave daylight service, til 1800 hrs local time only, due of co-channel<br />

Kiev Ukraine transmission.<br />

Special main power of 60 Hertz needed by a generator, later connected link<br />

to German main power net via transformer converter.<br />
