TRENDS IN TROPICAL BANDS BROADCASTING 2010 A year ago I did forecast, that there will not be many Domestic broadcasting stations left on the Tropical Bands (120, 90 and 60 mb) in year 2020 and this trend continues. As editor of the Domestic Broadcasting Survey (DBS) my task is, throughout the year until the next publication, to check the bands myself and follow the loggings from our members and other DX-ers around the world. For each frequency on the list, a note is taken of the months when it has been heard. If a station has not been heard by any DX-er during the past 12 months, it is deleted. By this measure, the DBS contains only the active domestic broadcasting stations. With this systematic registration of broadcasting stations on the Tropical Bands each year, it is possible to make some statistics, on how many frequencies were active in each region of the world and compare these numbers. International broadcasters, Clandestine and Pirate stations are not included in these statistics. Domestic Broadcasting Survey 12 You can read about the new DBS-12 at According to DBS-12, published in April 2010 by the DSWCI, 223 frequencies were heard in the frequency range of 2.200 to 5.800 kHz by DX-ers around the world during the past year. That are 12 frequencies less than the previous year. But during the past year Tropical stations have disappeared, especially in Central Africa, Latin America and Indonesia. The reason is that other media got higher priority than keeping an elderly Shortwave (SW) transmitter alive. A week ago DSWCI-member since June 1983, Gabriel Ivan Barrera suddenly was hit by a heart attack and passed away at an age of only 52. He was born in Chile, but when his father established an international trade business in Buenos Aires, Gabriel was employed there. He has been a keen DX-er since 1976 with special interest of Latin American and African stations on the tropical bands. By 1989 he had heard 180 countries and verified 145 countries. For about 30 years he has been DX-Editor of the DX-programme of Radiodifusion Argentina al Exterior and his last DX-Supplement was aired on Sep 17, 2010. He wrote these words on a DSWCI Questionnaire on March 18, 1989: "I am very happy to be a member of DSWCI, principally because all the information is of first level around the world, always with the latest news and commentaries. For me, the DSWCI is the best DX club in the World. GIB." Gabriel did visit my home in Denmark August 15, 1990 on a business trip. I visited Buenos Aires, hosted by Gabriel for a week in March 1995, file:///Z|/DOKUMENTATION-BULLETINS/WWDXD-BCDX/2010/bcdx981.txt[11.06.2012 10:40:20]
